Ay Steve thanks for a great explanation there I
appreciate it! one question though how do I get
1-16b(external synths) to play along with 1-16a(my
patterns/drums) without turning off 1-16a in
multi/pattern mode?

I will let others comment on the tightness issue.

Follow the hierarchy:
Sequencer [one per E-Mu Command Station/P2500--not
counting arps, 
riffs, and beats]
--pattern [128 slots x 8 banks] 
----track [16 tracks per pattern]
------midi channel [16 channels per track]

The E-Mu Command Station/P2500 sequencer works in
pattern mode and 
song mode. Each pattern has CHANNEL ASSIGN data stored
with it. For 
each pattern you can have up to 16 tracks.

With CHANNEL ASSIGN [T01 --> T16] you can set the
Destination to:
none, 
the internal synth, 
external gear, 
both the internal synth and external gear.

Also, with CHANNEL ASSIGN [T01 --> T16] you can set
the Channel to:
MultiA
MultiB
01A --> 16B

Each track can have data on up to 16 midi channels. 

If you have a multitimbral synth on MIDI PORT A, by
setting a 
particular track to MultiA, you will send all the data
on that track 
(up to 16 channels) to that synth.

If you dedicate each of 5 different synths to a single
channel, you 
can send track data to one specific synth by setting
it to the 
channel that synth receives.

If your 5 synth modules are all multitimbral, you
might be able to 
configure them to only accept data on certain
channels. For example:

Module 1: channels 1 -> 4
Module 2: channels 5 -> 8
Module 3: channels 9 -> 12
Module 4: channels 13 -> 14
Module 5: channels 15 -> 16

If you have a midi router, you >> MIGHT << have less
"midi delay" 
than if you daisy chain the synths using midi thrus.
Midi delays 
from daisy chaining may not be an issue, however.

You may want to make a multisetup for a particular
studio 
configuration (5 modules), give it a memorable name,
and save the 
multisetup.

Keep in mind, you can also send arps out via the midi
ports to 
control external gear, so you can use the 16 buttons
as arp triggers 
for sounds on your external gear.
