How to write..........

How to write..........

2011-08-26 by tronbros

Dear All,

I recieved this message:

<<What is the dollar value of the Mellotron mkII #***? I may be interested in purchasing it.>>

That's it. Where are the common courtesies of hello, please and thankyou? I am fucking well fed up with the lack of manners in emails, sadly eminating from the USA in almost every instance. People want our help but can't couch it with any grace or politeness. This person can get well and truly stuffed. So, to my esteemed US friends, what do you think?

Best,

Martin

Hi Martin,
Speaking as POM, most of the Americans I have met have been courteous and friendly, even in LA ( no offence ) we met with some real kindness. I don't think email encourages politeness as it is so immediate. It is too easy to send something off without thinking. Something I have been guilty of on a few occaisions. :)

Helping out with my son's internet business I have been amazed at how rude people can be. However sometimes I think it is unintentional and perhaps it's best to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I admit your example is brusque but you could just email him back the answer $xxxxx.

I am also guilty of not reading things properly, I assumed that he was requesting the price of something you were selling. If not I would just have ignored it.

Greetings Dear Martin,

I get well-mannered emails from Nigeria all the time. My replies are generally not so well-mannered. But I think that the art of writing has deteriorated immensely since the advent of texting.

If you have a MkII for sale, I hope it goes to a classy person like one of us.

Come on now Martin, There are plenty of “stick up their a$$” people in this world….not just in the US….don’t you think?

…I’ll admit we have our share….but most of them are illegals from other countries!

Make the sale….in this market don’t let any get by…hardly seems rude….they just don’t know what a great guy you are…take their money

while the US dollar still has “some” value” J

Cheers!!

Hi Martin-

I agree, courtesy and proper grammar are sorely missing in today's email world. It's not too much to ask or expect. I would not take the inquiry seriously. I would also not hesitate to prompt the sender for a more sincere and gracious inquiry (if I felt the sender had more than a passing intellegent interest).
Yessir, it is noticably an American shortcoming. Our media promotes it, too. It's no joke. The media says that men must act like they are still in high school until they reach 45 years of age. This is the point at which one beer suddenly starts to cause heartburn, reading glasses are required, multiple popular prescriptions are de rigueur, and yet we must still refer to each other as "dude". And, all women in the same age range must talk like they are the proverbial "valley girl". Sad.

  My best (while venting)

Marty,

It is sad, the lack of manners and civil grace that is missing from everyday interaction. I receive 5-6 emails a week from young composers looking for work. Maybe one email a month is really worth responding to in any meaningful manner. The most polite emails are usually from Italy, interestingly enough. I have to remind my coworkers to say "Good Morning" before launching their volley of work related details at me...sad.

I think each culture has their quirks that have a particular rub on any other culture. For instance, for the most part, I have found most French people (Parisians really) don't like me. I am that loud, brassy, oafish American that seemingly lacks any "culture". I smile and laugh too much. I am not cynical and that bothers people who are cynical. Americans don't view cynicism as a sign of intellectual acuity. It is a shortcoming. The big exception to that is the "Hipster" personality type that is very prevalent in NYC, but we are already poking much fun at it.

Most Americans don't know how to deal with the Brits, Irish, Scots even though there is no language barrier. The goofy American assumes that if you speak English, you understand exactly "where I'm coming from". On the other hand, many Americans would view British (and Scottish) verbal jousts as somewhat pointless and pathetic.

That is my very humble and narrow observation.

I apologize for my countrymen's lack of manners.

Wow Fritz... talk about growing some! You are going to bow before these pretentious Brits?

Seriously... it has gotten a lot worse... Its this generation of "entitlement".. And I do not mean Social Security or Medicare... I am talking about people taking the easiest and quickest way to an end, without considering how it affects others.

But this is not limited to my fellow countrymen. I travel all over the world and see it everywhere.

I don't think any nation has worse manners than any other, and I don't think any person is always good or bad mannered, we all have off days, things on our minds etc, which can make us appear rude to others.

Although on average some people are of course better mannered than others.

RE: [newmellotrongroup] How to write..........

2011-08-27 by John Hammaren

Americans don't view cynicism as a sign of intellectual acuity…

In some cases, yes. In my case, it is the essence of my being and I am as American as one gets, (I hope). But this does bring to mind what I have observed recently with regard to the group and the circuitous threads. I almost find the comments with regard to cultural quirks as irritating as the political innuendo that has been bandied about. Why is this? Because when I see that in one instance the ‘rules’ are used to squelch comments the moderator views as inappropriate, I say fine. It their house. And then I see this. I’m sorry Fritz, I don’t see any reason for an apology, unless you think that this person’s behavior is ENTIRELY reflective of the citizens of the US. The fact is, our culture (or lack thereof) is ours, and frankly, take it or leave it. I find Brits I have worked with in AMERICAN business environments utterly and mindblowingly rude. Aussies? I love them. The French? Thought they were the rudest when I spent time in Paris in ’00 and loved them in ’09. Goiing back in ’12. Now what has this to do with my impression of Britain and France? In the whole sense, nothing. Perceptions change all the time. I am grateful for Martin and his bunch. And they have delivered what they advertise. And I have as much respect for the Brits as a whole as any other group of people. When I deal with rude Brits in the office, I don’t transfer that distaste to their population as a whole. I see that they (the Brits I have observed) seem to be insecure in our very political, competitive work environment, attributing to their ‘rude’ behavior. Out of work they tend to be like the rest of us – normal and not rude.

I for one get sick and tired of non-American’s bashing, making fun of, and being rude to Americans, but I do understand, as I have learned to put that crap aside before passing judgment on an entire population. But American’s bashing Americans? Yes, we do have a number of apologists out there. Just because one is American, British, French, Christians, Jews, Muslims, or white, black, or purple doesn’t mean we can use the metaphorical ‘N’ word on ourselves and think that it’s okay because we’re in that group and no one will mind. I resist resorting to jingoism as I get older, as easy as it would be because it serves no end, although civilized thought would have us believe that the mention of this is some kind of crime, or so typically American. Yes, when one has no memory of anything before last week, then it is pointless to even bother anyway.

But, back to the topic. Fritz, ‘Most Americans don't know how to deal with the Brits’. - Blatant generalization. ‘The goofy American assumes that if you speak’ – sorry, not buying that one. I have found English Canadians as impatient with their French counterparts, and vice versa as anywhere. You think all Canadians are bi-lingual? And on and on.

And to the rest of the group, I offer no such apologies, although thanks for offering on my behalf. And, no Clay, I am not looking for a new rule, and frankly I love political banter particularly with my opponents, but it seems that everywhere we turn in this modern age, someone is always offending someone else. If anybody is still awake, how about some Tron discussion?

Regards,

John

I apologize for my countrymen's lack of manners.

fritz

Hello Martin,

I'm in the States and have been communicating with our finance groups in
China, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, India, Germany and UK.
Without exception, all business communication is polite, on point, and
complete. Many times I think this is because English is the second
language, but business is conducted differently and courtesy is part of
it.

Business communication I typically receive from the States is terse and
bottom line. This will piss people off, but I think the age of the
writer has something to do with it. If born 1965 or before, manners,
born later, I WANT IT NOW!

Don't indict us all in the States, however, some young and old still
have manners. Fire away.

Regards,

John

I think it is a byproduct of the Internet, social media, email, etc. And I
agree with you John. Sadly, it is only going to get worse. We live in an
age where our youth play games and interact online, often with people
thousands of miles away. Rarely have I seen a game of pick-up football or street
baseball. Even the neighborhood basketball courts aren't as busy as they
once were.

When we shop online, we have to cause to greet or thank. We rarely speak as
our parents and especially our grandparents did; with a sense of propriety

To whom it may concern,

I am not sure which American culture you all are speaking of. While
don't exactly have a caste system like our British friends we have
cultural divides as wide as , say , the British and the French! Rude is
rude no matter where you come from- a lack of consideration and a sign
of ignorance. It is easy though to slip into bad habits and I stand
reminded.

Yours Truly,

John,

Normally I have no need to apologize for my American brethren, but in the case of Martin, my longtime good friend, I felt it was necessary.

But, back to the topic. Fritz, ‘Most Americans don't know how to deal with the Brits’. - Blatant generalization

but true....

"‘The goofy American assumes that if you speak’ – sorry, not buying that one." Then you must not have spent any time in the vast underbelly of the American working lower class, which is, proudly, where my roots are. Yes, there are many good people there, but for many folks, no matter their ethnic background, if they can't understand it, they fear it.

good rebuttal John, well done

… Americans don't view cynicism as a sign of intellectual acuity…

Martin -

Good day and hope all is well in Tronland.

It seems that you have been scammed by a robot. The robot looks for email addresses (online classified ads, etc.) that are connected to an item presumably being sold and sends a minimal email that plugs in the item for sale -- just to get a response. This happens to us regularly. These often are used for money laundering or other scam.

The email is intentionally crappy. This isn't a person who cares, let alone cares about polite discourse or proper language.

Now, I recall a certain quotable Irishman who said something about two peoples separated by a common language.....

Cheers!

Well....that certainly threw up some interesting discussion. I have to say here and now that I have very good friends in the US so it is unfortunate that the issue I have with the abandonment of pleasantries in emails is largely concerned with mail from there. From now on I will save emails that I take issue with and let you have a compilation from time to time.

Thanks Fritz, you took this as I had hoped. I do admit even in growing up at the top end of poor, I only got above the belly button. But, a landscaping gig and a factory job working with 400 or so immigrants back in the 70’s was an education. As you say, mostly good people though. Just like the Bernie Madoffs of the world in the ensuing years. Not sure what type of people in US actually make us look worse. J

Regards,

John

I apologize for my countrymen's lack of manners.

fritz

People want our help but can't couch it with any grace or politeness. This perso n can get well and truly stuffed. So, to my esteemed US friends, what do you think?

Well....that certainly threw up some interesting discussion. I have to say here and now that I have very good friends in the US so it is unfortunate that the issue I have with the abandonment of pleasantries in emails is largely concerned with mail from there. From now on I will save emails that I take issue with and let you have a compilation from time to time.

I would respond to this by saying:
"Before we answer your inquiry you or begin any correspondence, you must properly introduce yourself".
"Thank You"
In reality though - this person isn't really serious about buying it, because if they were they would have made a proper introduction and established some kind of relationship.
The odd exception is that they are serious, but because they lack consideration in the first place - they could be such a pain in the ass to deal with as a regular customer, that you should not bother at all.
Personally I expect politeness from everyone I have to deal with - family, employers, colleagues etc.
If their is no attempt at cordiality, then there is no relationship.

So far, the hurricane is a fizzle here in CT. I feel cheated.

RE: [newmellotrongroup] Goodnight Irene

2011-08-28 by Ms. Janet Strauss

Well, I've just gotten back online thanks to my emergency generator.

After five small black outs yesterday afternoon, the power finally went down
for good all over my neighborhood at around 5:50PM.

First order of business was to get my wife's Autocad station back up and
running off the generator.her back up battery was going fast and didn't seem
to want to get the computer on.

Lots of huge trees are down, laying over power lines and in streets.

Saw one power pole snapped in half.

The local Martins grocery is on back up generator.

They have some aisle lights but it is kinda dark...real third world stuff.
Only dry and canned goods...all the freezer chilled units are dark, and
they had to ship everything out.

A real mess.

If this is anything like Isabel...people will be w/o electrical power for up
to two weeks....

As usual after a hurricane, very nice sunny blue sky day.and HOT .....with
no AC.

And the lovely sound of chain saws floating on a gentle southern breeze
through my open windows....

Utter pedantry. No need to apologize Bruce. The expression "I could care
less" is common usage, at least in the U.S. and means the same thing as
"I couldn't care less."

The reason for this seeming contradiction is that it is said with
sarcasm, as in "as if ..." Anyone interested can find a good essay on
the subject (by a British author no less) here:

http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ico1.htm

The spell checker doesn't catch "the" for "they" does it Mike. See, I
can be pedantic too :-)

How about the morons guide to social expressions like:

"as if"
"way to go"
"Hey Boss"
"Wazzup!?"
"just sayin"
"I'm so not..."
"do the math"
"yadda yadda"
"think outside the box"
"no way"
"that's killer"
"my bad"

And so on.

This sycophantic and ingratiating language really sickens me.

Agreed. I respond to "My bad" with "Your bad what?"

Also, it is quite tiring to hear the word "absolutely" pronounced "absuly". I can go on concerning this subject, but will not. I couldn't not care less.

My biggest gripe is with the misuse of "I", as in "this is for you and I".

Then there's "I'm like...", especially when it comes from one of those girls who talks from the back of her throat. Sometimes it's followed by a "you know?".

Don't forget the "non-words" that people invent on the spot, especially during interviews.

  Affectuate -Cause a change
Mazing -A contracted "amazing", so one can say "it's mazing".
  Prolly -Shortened "probably"
Rebecoming -Sports personality talk. A second coming? I thought only one guy was permitted this!
Di'ent, or did'dent or din'nent or did'nent. -"Didn't" never had quit as many vowels or dents.
Recoglection- Sports coach responding to a query.
  Functionable- Fully, I guess.
Eyeskulls- Frozen water that hangs from a house.
Assumulated- Response on a tv coutroom show.
Impactful- What the weather is to a weatherman.

Some crap like this has actually ended up in the dictionary!

  -Bruce D.

That's the one that kills me, the whole question sounding thing.

I think I'm a little more lenient than Mr. Dale, seeing as how I use some of those phrases, "hey Boss", "no way". I don't think I'm going to be cast a simpleton for using them...ehem.

The few that really get me are "literally", "whole entire", "ironic" (when one really means coincidental) and "reticent" ( when one really means to say reluctant..subtle differences, but differences nonetheless)

How about when someone has renumeration rather than remuneration on the resume.

The three I hate most, “disrespected me”, “you go girl” and “man up”.

If people are telling you, "you go girl," you need to man up.

How about when someone has renumeration rather than remuneration on the resume.

The three I hate most, “disrespected me”, “you go girl” and “man up”.
