Re: [motm] patch cables advice

Well Fred,

For my system I have custom made a couple of cables with the perfect length
for the connections they make. These include short "Out of the way" cables
for filter to filter, vco to filter fo atleast one waveshape, eg's to vcf's
and vca's for gate and cv out, pulse from vco to 120 sub octave mux, etc.
Anyway my cables that are almost always pluuged in have really short cables
so they stay out of the patching area most of the time. REALLY has helped my
patching out being able to more clearly see through the fog of cables. Are
you making cables yourself or buying them? I bought a roll of cable for
about $100 from Mouser and now when I need cables, I simply buy the
connectors and different colors of shrink to make whatever I need, whenever
I need it. If you can build modules you can certainly build audio cables.
Anf the home built way is cheap per cable. The trick is finding a good deal
on the connectors. Hope this helps!

well, i'm not sure... it's a coke vs. pepsi thing, really... there are
those out there who are all about building your own cables, and then there
are those who feel it's a waste of time. i wouldn't mind building my own,
might even enjoy it. but on the other hand, i could use that time for
patching...

i still am interested to know what those of you who buy your cables have
done... wacky kovacy has been recommended, but those are *really* pricey,
and i know i need a lot.

thanks,
fred

Fred,

The Wacky prices are actually very low! I don't know that you can make your own
cables with similar quality cable and jacks on your own. I have found the Wacky
cables to be a very good value. If you don't care as much about the quality, then
go to Mars or Guitar Center and pick up some packs of 1' and 3' Hosa patch cables.
They work OK but will wear out sooner. Again, they are pretty cheap unless you are
going to be buying serious amounts of bulk cable and plugs.

Just my $.02.

Eric

Fred,

I have bought over 130 cables from John Kovac and find them to be a very
good value and excellent quality. By the time you buy the Switchcraft
plugs, cable, and shrink tubing, your close to what John charges if not
more. Plus he'll make cables in any color combinations you want between
cable and shrink. This is very helpfull when the number of cords on the
MOTM gets big. Email John and ask him for a quote and tell him your a
MOTM user. He cuts us a deal. Order 24 at a time and I think he's not
charging shipping.

I know it's kinda cheezy, but I just buy the Hosa 8-packs of molded-plastic
cables, most any music store has 'em, at about $15-$20 a pack. Come in 18"
and 3' lengths, a rainbow of colors, and cheap enough to throw out when
they break. Actually, I haven't had one fail in the modular yet, after 2
years or so.

And it's more fun to build that third cable than to build that thirty-third
cable. My suggestion is to go Kovacky, but also buy some cable and some plugs
so you can make cables when you run out and are awaiting that second run of
Kovacy cables (or your too lazy to get to Guitar Center to pick up those Hosa
cables).

I've been buying "Horizon" cables from my local music store. They are
relatively inexpensive, come with metal plugs and have not failed on me even
in live situations ("hey roadie, look out for that.....DOH!").

I doubt if they are using Switchcraft plugs but they seem durable enough.
Printed on the cable sheath is "low noise instrument cable" (whatever that
means!). They do come in different colors as well.

If I recall correctly, I paid around three-ish for each 3ft cable, around
six dollars for the 20 footers.

hello all,

we can get horizon cables in the UK,
of the guitar lengths i've been getting, they did look very much like they
were switchcraft (switchcraft use a light cream coloured insulator between
the tip and sleeve), so either they were switchcraft or they were bootlegs -
either way, i can't really tell the difference
by the way, their midi cables are top dollar (proper neutrik five pin
dins) - i've not managed to source these anywhere else in the uk (not even
studiospares, who'll sell you a neutrik, and a nasty horrible other thing
will turn up)

Have you tried:

http://www.canfordaudio.com/

? I've had very good luck with them, even for getting hard-to-find UK
products shipped to the U.S. Nice guys too at the trade shows.

hello all,
we use canfords quite a lot (check out their 19" rack mount fridge !!!), but
if i remember correctly, the best dins they stock are the deltron ones -
which are themselves good quality, i'm just a bit of a neutrik nut

thanks for the thought anyway
cheers

FWIW:

I often use the higher-quality Hosa MIDI/DIN cables (all pins are
connected); they have stress relief and metal plugs. The cable is flexible
and hangs well, and I've had no problems or failures.

I own quite a few of the Horizon cables, and I've had a couple fail over
time, especially the longer ones (i.e. the ones I step on more often).
They're o.k., but Kovac's feel a lot better. Kovac's cable is a bit more
stiff which is nice when patching.

The Switchcraft plugs John uses, btw, have the "Switchcraft" name stamped
into the metal, so that may be one way to tell... They may have plugs
without their name too, I don't know.
