Hook up wire

Hook up wire

2003-10-06 by Roger Rossen

Hello all,

Does anyone have readily avail.: some mouser or allied cat.#'s for
hook-up wire? I don't know why but I seem to have a mental problem
with this particular hardware item and often end up getting the wrong
wire or something completely different than what I thought.
I'm pretty sure we're talking 22awg - eh? Just like the stuff Paul
uses in the kits!

This would be greatly appreciated - The page Dave (Hotrod) put
together on common MOTM parts is VERY helpful! I would think it
helpful to all to keep this list growing. (maybe it is somewhere and
I just haven't found it !?!?!?) If there is a 'central data core' let
me know so I can contribute.

Ordering parts can be so fun - NOT !!!

Rog -
just spent way too much on parts this past weekend-which equates
to: "no x-mas this year for the family....chuckles"

I use Belden #9921, which is 22ga, UL1007 listed. About $13 for a 100ft spool. This is "the good
stuff". I get mine from Allied or Newark.

A cool little bench setup is Belden #8824, which is 8 different colors of wire in a little
dispensor, about $65.

I know folks like to dig wire out of dumpsters of salvage telephone wire found on the side of the
road. Not me.

Me neither- I get mine from buildings that are going to be
demolished. That way you know it's dry and clean. Belden 22awg by
any other source is still Belden 22awg. Most of the time, if you
have your own safety shoes, glasses and hardhat, the other
construction workers won't even notice you...

I don't have part numbers for the 22 gauge wire, but I've got Mouser
part numbers for the 18 gauge power supply wire:

1 602-3055-100-01 1 11.370 11.37
          18AWG UL1007 WHT
          Alpha Wire Hook-Up Wire

1 602-3055-100-02 1 11.370 11.37
          18AWG UL1007 BLK
          Alpha Wire Hook-Up Wire

1 602-3055-100-03 1 11.370 11.37
          18AWG UL1007 RED
          Alpha Wire Hook-Up Wire

This wire looks identical to the official MOTM stuff, it probably is
the same stuff.

While we're on this topic, I also picked up a couple of tools for
fixing wires into MTA connectors (Mouser part numbers):

1 571-598041 1 22.000 22.00
          156 T HANDL MAINT TL
          AMP MTA .156' Connectors

1 571-598031 1 20.200 20.20
          100 T HANDL MAINT TL
          AMP MTA .100' Connectors

These aren't the fancy ones with a trigger; these are the T-shaped
ones that still require a vice to hold the connector and a bit of
grunting to get the wire in place. I've found these tools to be much
more reliable than the old pliers method, especially when building 20
power cables. The results are consistent and perfect each time.

These aren't "must have" tools. But if you're taking in your empties,
you might want to consider buying yourself a treat with all that
dough. That's how I celebrated my birthday !

Me too. I picked up a 50 foot trunk line of 22 gauge twisted pairs
from a university building I was working in. I've been picking away
at it for 10 years.

I found wire at Unicorn Electronics in Johnson City, NY, last summer during
a trip. I bought seven 100-foot spools of different colors in #22 gauge
stranded at $4.83 each.

You can find other synth DIY parts there too.

My first DIY synth (circa 1980) was built with #24 gauge wire salvaged from
the dustbin of an avionics factory I had worked at. It was Teflon
insulated. They threw away a lot of clippings that were perfectly good,
just too short. I miss that Telfon insulation which is impervious to a 700
degree soldering iron.

These look similar to the ones I got from All Electronics. However, I see All Electronics is out of all but 2 colors. I plan to pick up the orange and violet colors from here that I don't have. Thanks for the tip Richard.

Ok, here it goes. Paul states that MOTM uses Belden 9921, which is 22 awg wire.

Belden 8824 is a kit of eight 25-ft. spools of 20 awg wire (8523)

Belden 9531 is a kit of five 100-ft. spools of 22 awg wire (8524) that is very similar to Belden 9921.

For those situations where you only need a small amount of hookup wire, Ace
Hardware has many different guages and colors of hookup wire on spools that
can be bought by the foot. That's what I do if I just need a couple of feet
to wire up a power supply or whatever.
