My first DIY synth (circa 1980) was built with #24 gauge wire salvaged from 
the dustbin of an avionics factory I had worked at.  It was Teflon 
insulated.  They threw away a lot of clippings that were perfectly good, 
just too short.  I miss that Telfon insulation which is impervious to a 700 
degree soldering iron.
