troubleshooting EMXP

troubleshooting EMXP

2013-10-21 by Windrum Scoggin

built an XP system from the ground up with two FDD drives.
Installed a fresh copy of XP 32 bit and installed the OmniFlop drivers
to replace the existing FDD controller and FDD drive inf/sys files
per the OmniFlop instructions.
When I go to do a FDD format
(trying to make Emax Plus OS DISK
for myself and others so we can plugs SCSI
Zips into our Emax and load banks etc via SCSI)
I get an error in EMXP. I have no idea what this error code
means or what could be wrong.
see attached pic
any help greatly appreciated.
I'd love to help the users out in the group but
if I don't get EMXP cutting FDD's soon
i am gonna be
SOL
Thanks

You can't attach a pic to a mail to the group.
You would have to put it in the group files, or in your mail provide a link to the picture.

esynthesist is a member on the group and is the developer of EMXP and you can contact him directly through his website also…

With that said- I have never tried formatting a floppy with EMXP.
Usually I format a floppy on the EMAX, then use EMXUTIL or EMX (or EMXP) to write the OS file to the already formatted disk.

Have you tried that?

Bascially it is an exclamation dialog
and Unknown Disc Format Error box.
that says
"unknown error processing message C0000014 Parameters 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c "
This all happened before I removed the OmniFdd.sys driver and rolled
back to the standard windows FDD controller

Omniflop had problems with it too. I then went into OmniFlop and formatted
a floppy within it, after rolling back the OmniFdd Floppy Controller Driver
and I did get OmniFlop to actually see the floppy and format it.
I did a 'test installation' using OmniFlop and got a message reading drive good and it "supports 281 predefined formats yada yada"
I then did a 'Format Write routine using the Plus OS disk as the source
and it did go through the routine and Formatted as well as wrote the disk.
I then did a 'test disk' diagnostic with OmniFlop and it tested out ok
";format Recongnized"
I then placed it into the Emax I HD Fdd and cold booted
and it says "disk not formatted!"
So, hell, I don't know...lets start from scratch here, maybe I will try it you way, Ted

Re: [emax] troubleshooting EMXP

Let me format the floppy on the Emax I HD first
then bring it into EMXP and see if I can lay the plus
OS onto the disk that way.
Before I rolled back the OmniFlop OmniFDC controller driver I kept getting the above error messages and Omniflop wouldn't see the disk at all
so we are a step in the right direction so far

I then formatted the Floppy on the Emax I HD and booted it just the same
to see if the Emax was indeed writing the disk correctly and it was.

I then took the FDD out of the Emax, Formated and function
and put it in my PC and started EMXP
I went to Emax disk utilities to 'Manage OS on Floppy Disk'
and got same error code dialog box
and same error code happens again
"unknown error processing message C0000014 Parameters 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c "

I don't know what
"unknown error processing message C0000014 Parameters 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c "

means to be quite honest..clueless here...

Think I will download EMXUTIL and see if that will fare better than EMXP is on this system as right now EMXP doesn't like my system for some reason

Re: [emax] troubleshooting EMXP

EMXUTIL booted from DOS does work, as that is how I make SE Update disks. I still format in EMAX first.
But I haven't had any customer come back and say the SE disk didn't work.

Will EMXUTIL run within DOS executed from within Windows (into case XP)?
If so I'll try to make the Plus OS disks that way.
If so, where can I get a copy?
Do you know of a download link for
EMXUTIL?
Do I need to keep OmniFlop installed?

This Plus OS disk is the only thing keeping me from using SCSI zips on my Emax I HD

No, you can't run it within XP as it works to write raw to the device. Windows will "interpret" the I/O and make the disks not useable...it doesn't use OMNIFLOP or windows at all....

EMXUTIL and DOS bootable disk image are both in the files section of the group

So are you saying I can dump the DOS (you have posted up on the user group)
onto a floppy and boot the computer from the floppy?
Once booted into DOS I simply what?
insert EMXUTIL disk into the floppy drive then
run EMXUTIL at the A:// prompt?
We are going back a ways here..my memory is rusty.
I am having flashbacks of my Commodore 128 inserting a 5-1/4" disk and typing 'Load *, 8
Is EMXUTIL in the drop box files folder too?
If so I will try this and see if it will work
Thank You Ted!
P.S-Is it necessary to format the floppy on the EMAX first, then use EMXUTIL?

One last question, How do I boot my PC into DOS
if I cannot seem to get the necessary DOS onto a floppy?
I should just be able to format a floppy in WinxP
and that should give me the necessary DOS files to boot into DOS once I set my floppy drive up as the boot device within my PC BIOS correct?

Re: [emax] Re: troubleshooting EMXP

Floppy drive should already be a default boot device where floppy is inserted on boot.
Formatting a floppy in XP does not put the OS files on it, and XP OS files are too big.
The boot622.exe file will make the full DOS 6.22 floppy for you.
Simply download, insert a 1.44MB floppy in drive a: and execute the program.

OK, do I just drag and drop the 'boot622.exe' onto a floppy disk within windows? If not, how do I get it onto a bootable floppy?
Thanks for you patience with all my idiotic questions!

The boot622.exe file will make the full DOS 6.22 floppy for you.
Simply download, insert a 1.44MB floppy in drive a: and execute the program.

troubleshooting EMXP

Not quite sure how I'd execute

If worse comes to worse there's
HxC floppy emulator
Or internal IDE Zip in the Emax

With that said- I have never tried formatting a floppy with EMXP.
Usually I format a floppy on the EMAX, then use EMXUTIL or EMX (or EMXP) to write the OS file to the already formatted disk.

1) You cannot use any IDE interface drives directly with Emax.
2) I downloaded and double click the dos exe and it said "please insert floppy" here at work. You are making this step / item too difficult by "over-analyzing" the process.

Seeing all of these listserve posts on this floppy disk OS issue: Windrum, have you considered paying the $5.95 plus $3.00 domestic shipping to just order an Emax Plus 1.0 operating disc from Route 66? It seems that that would be simpler, less time consuming and certainly less frustrating.
No I have no connection to the above vendor whatsoever.
Please don't take this as any criticism of trying to go the PC route on this. Just trying to think of another option to solve the problem. Ted as usual is so gracious in sharing his knowledge, and patient in assisting you and the listserve with the problem.

Re: [emax] troubleshooting EMXP

2013-10-22 by Windrum Scoggin

Well, I would do that, but this is a big EGO thing with me in that I don't wan to let something so simple 'beat me'.
with EMXP's claims, it also it seems that this should NOT be an issue
being that EMXP is supposed to do this without incident, and it DOES
Not format to floppies the way it should(at least on my machine it won't)
Yes, perhaps This very well could be a user
be user headspace and timing issue, but I doubt it.
I build PC's for fun and know
my way around them pretty well and certainly have had no issues installing
the Omniflop drivers, getting it to see my floppy disk drive and actually formatting to EMU OS using Omniflop wizard itself (at least it says it does..once its placed into the Emax the Emax says floppy isn't formatted!)
So, perhaps its NOT working..
The problems arise when trying to burn a copy of an OS disk using wither Omniflop or EMXP:
It just isn't working.
Yeah, I could just buy a disk BUT why pay for a disk when I am going to need to make more copies to help people out in our user group who also need the plus OS disks also? Are we ALL to pay Route 66 10.00 for a single Plus OS floppy disk? I think if we have to bone this deep into these machines this copying an OS disk shouldn't be all that difficult-as a matter of fact, it should be something rather simple for most of us and I am certainly
not one to shun getting my hands dirty just a little to make it happen.
Still, this is ridiculously time consuming for such a simple task.
as EMXP is not doing what is should and being that it is indeed a 'freeware program' I cannot complain BUT, it is what it is, you got no other choices.

I am starting to think that running off the SCSI connector that i installed on this is a rather pointless issue as eventually, the SCSI zip disks will wear out and die as will the ZIP drives. This was just a quick fix to get the Plus OS installed so I could actually load in sounds off the SCSI Zip drive but I am really just fed up with the whole EMU SCSI Bullshit routine and am just gonna order the HxC floppy emulator and be done with it all.

thanks for the advice.

Yeah,
I have heard some pretty shady stories regarding that outfit as well...especially in regards to people getting replacement FDD's that once installed, did NOT work.
I am going HxC floppy emulator and never looking back..this FDD and SCSI zip shit is for the birds..too antiquated and unreliable

Yeah, I could just buy a disk BUT why pay for a disk when I am going to need to make more copies to help people out in our user group who also need the plus OS disks also? Are we ALL to pay Route 66 10.00 for a single Plus OS floppy disk?

No I have no connection to the above vendor whatsoever.
Please don't take this as any criticism of trying to go the PC route on this. Just trying to think of another option to solve the problem. Ted as usual is so gracious in sharing his knowledge, and patient in assisting you and the listserve with the problem.

1) You cannot use any IDE interface drives directly with Emax.
2) I downloaded and double click the dos exe and it said "please insert floppy" here at work. You are making this step / item too difficult by "over-analyzing" the process.

Re: [emax] troubleshooting EMXP

2013-10-22 by Krikor Kouchian

I must say i should have gone for the floppy emu.
I went to do the scsi mod SE upgrade, install a card reader and a slim floppy instead.
Since that nothing is stable.
No midi dump anymore, rs422 not working on upgraded OS (both show bad packet message errors), so my emuser is no need.
My emax still works flowlessly with the original OS and also accepts midi dump on it.
But the hassle I went through and the time and money spent is just insane.
So honestly I would strongly advice to go for the floppy emu thing, on the end I need to remove my CF each time I want to copy bank, at least with the floppy emu I wouldn't need to go back an forth to Xp all the time.

Yeah, I must say, trying to get my system to see SCSI has been anything but an easy task.
I just want to make ONE Plus OS floppy and get it to boot into the EMAX and I will be a really happy guy.
After that, its all HxC floppy emualtor for me...I don't trust my precious sampling and sounds to Zip disks, sorry.

Re: [emax] troubleshooting EMXP

2013-10-22 by jammie

i have serviced repaired and done lots of scsi upgrades and cf combo,s
and never had problems with emxp or scsi
the cf hotswap drives works and you can format a cf in the machine
;
also with a hxc floppy emulator you still need to create images
emxp is the fastest way to get sounds into an emax
i create sf2 then convert to emax format
i have done some samples for people
now when installing the omniflop drivers you have to make sure you do it right
also if you have a none windows specific format floppy you will get an error message it comes up with a error code just egnor it press ok as you are going to format it to an emax format any way the message does not occur if formated by a emax
the se upgrade disk you use omni flop to create this not emxp as its a img image format and need
also there is a faulty copy of the plus os disk in the files section and if you use it it wont format scsi disks or cf cards use the one by my name and that one works correctly
i know this because i could not format any cf cards with the original it just took forever to format then would give an error
so i got the original one from rob of the emulator archives as i still keep in touch as i buy modular modules
most of the time its people error thats the problem
if i can help in any way i will with os disks
dont use route66 he is dodgy is a scame artist as i confronted him about his lies as he was pleeding for money on the vfx group and i did a load of checks and the money was going to his second business and house and because he was moderator he removed me from group for calling him out and many people have never recieved items

No I have no connection to the above vendor whatsoever.

You might have a very good point there as both of the drives I purchased Used a Weird Stuff in Sunnyval and have no idea their history or use.

I am going to try and get another old one from work today and keep swapping til I find one that works. This shouldn't be this hard to do...

"also with a hxc floppy emulator you still need to create images

emxp is the fastest way to get sounds into an emax"

So I can use a regular 'multi-card' reader attached to my PC and
and use EMXP to format an SD card and add convert Emax sound files to Hfe to be use for the HxC floppy emulator I take it?

When I loaded the Omniflop drivers and clicked 'details' it showed the driver written by Jason Watson, etc so it looked like the driver install took no problem.

The error codes I get read:

Gonna try that and see if it fixes my problem, barring that, I will swap out floppy drives till I get one that works.
I think you are right in that these old FDD's are bad. I need to get me a New Old Stock Fdd

No midi dump anymore, rs422 not working on upgraded OS (both show bad packet message errors), so my emuser is no need.
My emax still works flowlessly with the original OS and also accepts midi dump on it.
But the hassle I went through and the time and money spent is just insane.
So honestly I would strongly advice to go for the floppy emu thing, on the end I need to remove my CF each time I want to copy bank, at least with the floppy emu I wouldn't need to go back an forth to Xp all the time.

the only os i could manage to get midi dump was the original 3.2, all other ones failed for me.

Prehaps the newer OS's changed the midi protocol as i recall the se update fixed direct midi dumps between a emax and sp1200?

has esynthesist been made aware of the troubles with other Os's?

the only os i could manage to get midi dump was the original 3.2, all other ones failed for me.
None worked with RS422 protocol.

You can't remove the SE update, but it's just bits in the 93C06 EEPROM.
If you boot Emax without SE capable OS, Emax will boot without the features.
