Hi Anthony and everyone in this group,

I´ve bought an Emax2 recently and likewise the display always reads "warning calibration needed"...i calibrated it with the recalibration function but this calibration seems not to be stored in any kind of memory...so it needs to be recalibrated every time. I don´t know enough yet as to say if this is normal or not.

Btw....i´ve been around this group for a week, and i´d also like to thank e-synthesist for what he´s done. I´m using emxp with no difficulties. Pitty that one cannot find the EmaxII sound bank in the net. I´ve visited dragonslair.com but i haven´t found anything.

Hi, thanks for the reply, i seem to have lost the
manual somewhere but found a copy on the web, i will
be able to sort the recalibration problem out as soon
as i can sort the new issue i have! The display
appears to be knackered now, well, not the display
iself as it works fine but what appears on it is
rubbish! im getting half of what should be displayed
and plenty of ////////````````` and a few random
letters, ive switched the unit off and disconnected
any midi cables (it seemed to knack after id been
linking stuff together) and switched back on again and
it seems that only the bottom line works now, does
anyone reckon this is fixable or is my emax 2 bust!
everything else seems to work fine tho!
Cheers

Re: calibration warning

2006-01-31 by esynthesist

Mmmm that display stuff doesn't look nice.

I don't know any technical details about the hardware of the EMAX-II,
but I'm pretty sure EMAX-II stores a few parameters in "some kind" of
memory (i.e. not on disk). This memory is retained even when power is
off.

Now I haven't heard of any battery in the EMAX (?) so I guess another
technology is being used, probably some kind of EEPROM (?)

After using "special" functions in the "master" module, EMAX
says "Just A Moment..." while saving the recalibration information
into memory. As this message appears for about 1-2 seconds this means
the save process is quite slow. That's why I think it's some kind of
EEPROM, because saving information into (early) EEPROMs is known to
be slow.
EEPROMs can be rewritten only a limited number of times. When they're
end of life, they can fail.

Does your EMAX remember the LCD contrast settings ? Because that's
also a parameter that is being saved in "memory".

Maybe I'm totally wrong, and maybe there's a battery somewhere in the
EMAX. If that's true, you should replace it :-)

Perhaps you can find the problem by doing some diagnostic tests, as
described in the diagnostics guide for EMAX (you can download that
one from www.emulatorarchive.com).

By the way, does anyone know if EMAX is using a battery or some kind
of rewritable ROM ??

Re: calibration warning

2006-01-31 by esynthesist

Yep, a few weeks ago Dave announced he would remove all EMAX banks
from his website www.dragonslair.ca.
It seems he was not telling a joke :-)

Of course there's still
http://www.hermannseib.com/english/synths/emax/banks.htm
but that site only contains EMAX-I banks and it's not complete.

Perhaps someone should host the banks from www.dragonslair.ca again
on another server (I'm sure a lot of us have downloaded all banks :-)

Re: [emax] Re: calibration warning

2006-02-01 by Charles Hopper

E-synthesist, i changed the display settings on the
recalibrate function, saved the settings then switched
the unit off, waited for a bit , switched it back on
and the display was as it was before id changed it (ie
readable as id changed the contrast so high you
couldnt see the letter as a test) so i guess you must
be right in that department. Im pretty sure in the
dim and distant past that ive had to recalibrate it
before, although it might have been my old d50, cant
remember, anyway now the display reads E-Mu Sytems Inc
on the top line (this doesnt change) and various
randomness on the bottom line (the best one is
////wait`a`moment/nnnn) i can make out what modules
and sub modules im looking at but as for values, they
seem to look like this [ppN]///////``. Im going to
check this later but the MIDI ports are directly
behind the display, maybes something has jolted or
knocked the display unit as ive been plugging in and
taking out MIDI cables? who knows, ill have a look
tho!
Cheers
Anthony

SV: [emax] Re: calibration warning

2006-02-01 by Brian Ronn

Hi

When I received my used Emax II I saw that the display showed strange letters and sometimes a blank screen. It turned out to be some kind of disconnection between the main PCB boards inside (Although they appeared to be connected).

Try to upen up the Emax II and unscrew the PCB's and detach the boards from each other and reseat the PCBs and screw them back on. Also push on all the chips on the boards to make sure they are firmly seated.

Also upgrade to the latest OS (2.14) which eliminated my callibration appearance which I had every time I turned the Emax II on.

  Best regards

  Brian

Perhaps you can find the problem by doing some diagnostic tests, as
described in the diagnostics guide for EMAX (you can download that
one from www.emulatorarchive.com).

By the way, does anyone know if EMAX is using a battery or some kind
of rewritable ROM ??

SV: [emax] calibration warning

2006-02-03 by Brian Ronn

Hi Charles

I had the same problem because I used an older operating system. Try and use the latest OS2.14. That eliminated the problem for me.

  Best regards

  Brian

Cheers Brian, it currently uses OS2.14, well to be
honest ive just been booting up the emax2 from sample
disks as both my OS disks are missing, ive taken the
thing apart and made sure everything is in place but i
havnt put it back together again to boot it up, i'll
do that in a bit!
Thanks for the help
Anthony

Re: SV: [emax] calibration warning

2006-02-03 by Charles Hopper

Hi, seems that ive got the display sorted out now, it
seems to work ok, no rubbish appearing, unfortunately
ive got no further forward with the recalibration
warning, ive tried a few times to calibrate it but it
keeps 'forgetting' when its switched off, i found an
OS 2.14 disk and tried with that, oh well, i can live
with the calibration warning as long as the display
reads ok!
Cheers
Anthony
