HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!

2006-02-01 by S. Hernandez

So, I recently got my EMAX I and the shit doesn't want to accept the disc! It keeps saying
"INSERT DISC" and I do but it doesn't load or anything. It appears to be frozen where
nothing happens.

I did a search for smiler problems and I found someone had this problem too. Would it be
the disc drive? Should I just throw it violently at the person who sold it to me?!?!?! j/k

Seriously though, any ideas. I just got my Rhodes sounds to and I was ready to play.

DAMN!

maybe it's the floppy itself, i mean the disk not the drive. is this the
first disk you make out of emxp? didnt' the person who sold it to you
give you some disk to try out?
sorry if i'm too obvious, but in case it is a self made disk check
that it is a double density 2dd floppy disk or at least that the hole is
closed with some tape.

Hey David,

The former owner did give me discs to put in the EMAX. Funny thing, It was working fine
before. I was loading sounds and formatting discs and everything and just yesterday it just
froze.

Also, i was using a disc that I've loaded before and once that didn't work tried other Discs I
had. It seems to be crashed or something. I can't select anything on it.

Thanks for your responce.

i'm sorry i can't help :-(
anyway i've noticed this on my emax that maybe can help:
it happens when booting with sample disc formatted with another os
Theoretically it should just load the samples preventing me from
editing them (it says something like i'm sorry, different software
revision)
anyway sometimes it let me enter edit mode then it goes mad
notes and filters don't respond properly.
this behavior remains even after powering off and rebooting with a disc
known to be working! It takes several on off cycles to regain stability

what i'm trying to say is maybe you'll have to wait and see, or software
reset or check diagnostic tools, maybe it'aint no broken
i hope so anyway

Re: HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!

Hi,

Not sure that any of this will help you, but here goes...

Does the drive make any sound at all? Does it appear to have power, spin and seek? That
might give you an idea of whether the drive is failing, there is no power to the drive, or the
machine is locking up.

My Emax I has had floppy problems since I got it out of storage.

Worse case, it won't load anything when I turn it on. Although if I turn it off, wait and then
on again it usually at least loads the OS.

Then it will have trouble loading banks. I leave it turned on for a while and try again
occasionally. After a while, it starts loading correctly and will continue working until I turn
it off again.

I assume I'm seeing some kind of drive failure that will end up being permanent, or maybe
a bad electrical connection that improves as it warms up. If anyone knows what might
solve this, please let me know.

By the way, I've never been able to get a floppy to work that I've formatted with EMXP. (See
previous thread on this group.) Apparently it's to do with incompatibilities with certain
drives. I have to format them in the Emax I, then EMXP works fine for all other functions.

Re: HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!

The drive does have the power light now but there is no activity when I load the disc. It
doesn't even let me press Load all or Enter. It's like it's crashed. I tried turning it on and off
and I have also tried using other disc that I have succesfully loaded and still nothing. :(

So, it seems like the Drive is okay but liek I said, it freezes at "INSERT DISK" and then I
can't get out of it.

Thanks for your responce.

Re: HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!

That makes it hard to tell. I can always here my drive attempt to load, sometimes very
noisily, even when it fails.

None of the buttons will work until the boot part of the OS has loaded from the floppy. It
has to get past that before anything will happen.

If the floppy isn't seeking at all, the first thing to do would be to check the connections.
On mine the floppy drive light stays on all the time, so I don't know if it really indicates
anything about the status of the drive.

Otherwise, it's hard to tell whether the problem is with the drive or with the controller.

Hey !.........................
I'm sorry to hear you're having these glitch problems.
I'm thinking your power supply is suspect. If the
voltage levels supplied are low or not steady, the
whole unit can seem posessed. I'm no tech and can't
supply you with specs or tell you how to diagnose it,
but a weak power supply can cause all kinds of bizzare
symptoms.

Hey David,

Thanks for the email. I'll have to see check the power
supply to see if that is the culprit.

Thanks again,
