PCD-60B compatibility questions with Emax 1

PCD-60B compatibility questions with Emax 1

2014-06-09 by xeelox@...

I was looking at the following on eBay:
HOT SWAP SCSI FLASH CARD READER WRITER DRIVE for AKAI MPC2000XL

But when I inquired with the seller, he was insistent that the PCD-60B would NOT work with an Emax 1. FWIW, from the photos, the internal drive itself looks just like a SCM Microsystems drive to me.

I've read enough posts here and elsewhere with folks who have success with the PCD-60B drive, that I was pretty sure it would work but wanted to see if there was anything I was missing.

I know the following caveats:

- CF card size 32-256MB is a safe bet, and to avoid high speed cards

- I know some CF cards as well as some PC Card Adapters can vary so trying a few different ones might be necessary

- I also know firmware makes a difference as some drives only had the older read-only firmware, but upgrading is possible

- I know the PC card slot is the only one that will be recognized and must be set for SCSI id 0

Am I missing something else that could potentially prohibit me from using the 60B? I'm thinking (hoping) the seller is mistaken.

Thanks,

Jim

The PCD-60b that came to me from a group member for testing worked fine. Of course only the PC Card slot works at ID 0- that is expected.
The only other thing that I know of that could be a problem is if the unit doesn't have the latest firmware......

Ted

Thanks Ted; I was hoping it was a fairly safe bet.

I have another question, or 2, that just came to mind that I may have missed or overlooked in my research.

Ideally I'd prefer to take the PCD out of the external case, install it internally at SCSI 0 as my boot drive, and put the HD into the external enclosure on a different scsi id for short-term/temporary work like moving banks between my other Emaxes as well as EMXP. Conceptually speaking, is this as straightforward as I am making it out to be?

If that won't work and I wanted to keep the internal HD for a bit, couldn't I use the PLUS OS, keep the internal HD (at scsi 0) and set the PC Card reader for scsi ID 1 (or higher if needed) and then use the PCD externally and the transpose button to pick between scsi device ids?

Regards,
Jim

You could do either one.

Just make sure you are setup with a single chain for the scsi bus (not a star like Emu was doing with their internal to external add-on port).

I have posted about this before on the group, but you can certainly ask for specifics if you can't find it in the archives....
Sometimes it's simpler to draw a picture, and maybe I should do that on my website.... hmmm... thinking....

I do get a fair # of questions on proper SCSI chain setup, so I just added a post with example diagrams on my wordpress site.

Hopefully if there are questions lingering out there, the diagram will be helpful by visual explanation.

Re: [emax] Re: PCD-60B compatibility questions with Emax 1

I have the standard Emax service manual. (available from musicparts.com I believe. I got it from Rob of Emulator Archive, as he has right to copy).
Both Emax 1 and 2 use the 5380 SCSI controller which supports SCSI 1 interface.

Emax doesn't support LUNs, only targets.

Many SCSI 3 devices aren't fully backward compatible (hence the PCD-47B not working with Emax).

PCD-50B and 60B both work with only the PC Card slot as that is Target # (SCSI ID #), LUN 0.

Known working devices are in the database section.

If you have some specific question, we can certainly address it.

Hey Ted,

Is your Service manual a hard copy?
Does it have all of the pages?
The pdf I've found floating around the web is missing pages...

The site you listed as having it, can you purchase a complete hard copy from them with all pages?

Thanks,

Mine is PDF.

I have no idea of MusicParts.com has a different one (not missing pages) or hard copy.
You would have to inquire.

Did you notice if you have all of the pages in the pdf?
I notice pages missing in the middle of the pdf I found online. I posted it here too but it has missing pages as well.

You have to turn page by page to notice the jump in page numbers.

I believe these "missing pages" were where a power supply schematic would have gone.
But since they used a 3rd party for the power supplies, it is omitted.

I could have it wrong- but that was my understanding.

no because i dont have the copywrite to do it

i was given it by the person who did have the copywrite who used to be a member on here

and used to run emulator archive

he now runs ams modular synth modules

you would need to write to emu to see if we are allowed to host this material

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
