Mystery SDS7 Module

Mystery SDS7 Module

2013-01-25 by Chris

Hi everybody,

I bought an SDS7 card from ebay a few weeks ago for a very reasonable price. My SDS7 is not working at the moment but I couldn't pass it up. It got delivered to my parents house by mistake so I had them take some pictures of it which you can see here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55843000@N02/sets/72157632607021593/

I'm no expert on how these things work but I've compared these pics to my other SDS7 cards and it looks like there are a few pieces missing, though if something has been desoldered, it has been done pretty cleanly.

There is no name on the yellow block on the front to identify what type of module it is. Is this common? Can anyone identify it?

Now I think it will require some repair, but can it be revived? Or is it missing parts that I will probably never be able to source? Is this a lost cause. I feel I have a duty to try.

Onto the parts I can identify does anyone know where I can get any of the blue plastic holders which the EPROM's are seated in? Also the knobs + caps (they look similar to the small SDSV ones?)

Thanks!

Chris

Aouch!

Looks like someone nicked not just the prom but also the CEM(s?). I'm
not at home so I cannot check, but these are the parts you "steal" if
you can. The CEM ICs are expensive today and can be used to repair a lot
more expensive machines. Hence the robbery. It's probably possible to
repair, but I doubt it's worth it unless you're a solderer yourself.

Been down the same painful road of insight... :(

I think Ed can help you with knobs and caps! :D

I hate to to be the bearer of bad news but it'll cost more to repair this module than to buy one that already works. Jesper is right: the Curtis chips have been pulled and, maybe worse, so has the Hybrid board. You may be able to dig up the Curtis chips but the Hybrid is a whole other thing. :(
If you'd like to trade it against a working module, email me and we can work out the details.

Take this as an opportunity to graft in a different VCF, then. There are countless designs out there on the 'net that you could build up on a wee daughterboard and stick in there.

You could even just bypass the filter and have gritty harsh crunchy industrial noises.
