SDSV U.S.A VOLTAGE

SDSV U.S.A VOLTAGE

2010-02-19 by alfpaches

hi,
Ive just get my first sdsv brain. It use U.S.A. voltage so I need a
transformer. There are different models and Im not sure which one works fine with the sdsv. Could you tell me how many WATTS the SDSV needs?. Thanks in advance

Didn't know it was possible to do braintransplants (sorry, it's an open door,
talking about getting my first drumbrain)

Don't want to be a smart ass, It's all about the Voltage (and then the Watt's/
Ampere's) Perhaps you knew, so hope you don't feel offended. If you didn't
then I just saved you a once in a lifetime special theatre effect, something
between fireworks and a smokemachine (and a bad day or 2)

Hi Berk,

The Simmons unit I have is a UK model 240V 50Hz.
A suitable step-up transformer would suffice to use this model outside the UK Correct me if I am wrong, but the USA voltage is typically 110/115/20V AC @ 60Hz, so the current on your secondary of the transformer would be lower than your primary but this wouldn't be an issue.

I would guess that the frequency difference would not be an issue, but am not 100% certain.

Regards

Andy.

HI Alf,

Yes, you would need a transformer - UK Voltage is now 220V AC at 50Hz, it was 240V AC when the SDSV was designed, but it works at 220V AC.

USA Voltage is 110/115/120 VAC (correct me if I'm wrong) but your frequency is highter at 60Hz, so I don't think there would be an issue with the 60 Hz frequency but I can't be 100% sure. The voltage would not be an issue providing you have a suitable step up transformer.

The SDSV brain hardly uses any power, so wouldn't be an issue as your step up transformer (from 110V to 240V) would actually produce less current on the secondary and the power each side of the transformer remains the same.

Hope this helps.

regards

Andy,

Hi Alfonso,

I use a 100W 240v to 120v adaptor for my USA spec SDSV, it works fine.
The spec sheet in the SDSV manual rates the unit at 11VA (approx. 11W) so something like the 45W UK to USA voltage convertor from Maplin.co.uk
(part no. RP90X - £19.99) should do the job.
