Simmons SDS8 - SDS9 - SDS 1000 & "Fade To Grey"

Simmons SDS8 - SDS9 - SDS 1000 & "Fade To Grey"

2009-06-30 by roger.marchi

Hello everyone,
that's my first post here and - of course - it's a request of help.
I am from Italy and I'm not sure if my english is correct and clear...hope it is enough.

I play in a new wave cover band and we use a SDS 8 brain with three Dynacord pads for occasional '80 drum sounds, such as the classic electronic Simmons tom with a very long decay (which can be heard for example on Visage's "Fade To Grey": it's that "tsciuuuuuuuuuuu" sound).

A couple of weeks ago, our SDS8 brain had a problem with the internal electric transformer, which seems dead.
When the SDS 8 broke down, we bought a Simmons SDS 1000, because we thought we would've got the SDS 8 sounds we needed.
We tried to get that kind of electronic tom with a very long decay, but the decay control on the SDS 1000 allows just a quite short decay.

Well, the ways to solve this problem are several and here start my requests of help:
1) does anyone have a SDS 8 internal electric transformer as spare part, or do you know if there are non-Simmons transformer compatible with the SDS 8?

2) do you know if it's possible to obtain that kind of sound with the SDS 1000?

3) do you know of a reliable drum module/racks which can reproduce that kind of sound (and more in general the SDS8 sounds?).

Of course, we are also interested in buying a SDS 8 brain in working consditions.
We also have a damaged SDS9 brain useful maybe for spare parts to sell/exchange.
And if the SDS 1000 proves not to be the right stuff for us, we'll sell it too. More info and photos of the SDS9 and SDS1000 on request.

Thanks for any help!
Ciao from Italy
Roger Marchi

Re: [Simmons Drums] Simmons SDS8 - SDS9 - SDS 1000 & "Fade To Grey"

2009-06-30 by Dean Stewart Rumsey

Hi,

I own an SDS1000. Regarding the sounds, the decay seemed long enough for me unless you are looking for a longer decay (I'm not sure how long of one you want).

The analog tom sounds, to me, were a letdown compared to the SDS8 and I am looking for an SDS8 myself. I know that my SDS1000 cannot tune to the higher frequencies I want them to tune to and the noise/tone balance cannot completely kill the oscillator tone because if the 1000's inferior design. Also the filter also filters the oscillator and noise together instead of just the noise making tones not as good. I think the SDS1000 is only good for imitating acoustic drum sounds and just doesn't really give the classic Simmons sounds like what was best known from the SDSV but the second snare sample on the snare channel does give me the punchy LinnDrum-type snare sound I wanted. The bass drum of the unit sounded horrible to me - it has a "bump" sound instead of the cool, punchy SDSV-type kick.

The SDS8, another inexpensive unit, comes closest to the SDSV sounds but the quality is not as good as that of that expensive unit.

As for the SDS9, I think the bass drum is the same splatty bass drum as the one heard on the SDS1000 (I'm not sure). I know that the snare and rim are digital and I can use my own samples as soon as I can get a hold of an EPROM blower and some blank EPROMS. I'm wondering if the toms are any better than the toms on the SDS1000 since I have heard the pitch of at least one of the SDS9 toms tuned higher than what the high tom channel on my SDS1000 can do. I am also wanting to know if the 9 is any better than the 1000.

Regards,

Dean S. Rumsey

Re: [Simmons Drums] Simmons SDS8 - SDS9 - SDS 1000 & "Fade To Grey"

2009-06-30 by roger.marchi

Hi Dean,
and thanks for your reply.

The sound I intend to reproduce is best heard here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjzeSxgypE8
This is the 12" extended version of "Fade To Grey" (by the way, it wasn't released in 1980, but was only available on the 1983 singles collection).
At about 5'10'' starts the ending part of the song with the rhythm pattern in full evidence, as well as the electronic tom.
I haven't managed to get a decay long as this on the SDS 1000, while I easily obtained that on the SDS8.

I probably would get it too on the SDS9. I bought it used on ebay, but it came with many broken potentiometers, so it was a problem to program sounds. On the web I read something that made me thought that the SDS 9 was something like the "rack" version of the SDS 9.
But it isn't so.

Thanks
Regards
Roger

There can't be anything *too* complicated in the SDS8 power supply. It must provide a positive and negative rail somewhere about 15V for the analogue bits and +5V for the digital bits. If you can't find one transformer that has the correct windings, use two ;-)

Your friendly neighbourhood electronics geek should be able to sort it out. I suspect you're not sufficiently near me for you to bring it over, but if you find yourself about half-way up Scotland on the left-hand side give me a shout.

Hello,
Here some comments about analog brains:

*On the SDS5 and on the Tama Techstar only the noise is filtered.
*On the SDS7,SDS8,SDS9,SDS1000,SDS800 400 200,the noise and the tone is filtered.
SDS7 and SDS8 use a CEM3372 chip.
SDS9,SDS1000 and SDS800 400 200 use a CEM3394 chip.

OT, but still... I'm quite positive I have a 12" with the extended
version from 1980. Yes... here's one:

I don't know what Visage used, but thinking of what was available at the
time it sure is none of the ones you mentioned. AN SDS-V should be the
right path to tread otherwise. :)

Another note on the decay subject, has anyone ever experienced a drum
synth decay longer than the one on Pollards old beasts. That approaches
infinity... :D

Hi Jesper...

continuing for a while off topic:
"Fade To Grey" was released as a 12" in the UK, but the version included was the 7".
"Fade To Grey" was also released in Germany as a 12" with a slightly different cover. The german release includes a 6'14 version of Fade To Grey, which is not a proper extended version, but it is the 7" repeated twice with a less than professional editing.

The proper "Fade To Grey" 12" extended version (6'58', if my memory serves me well) was released only in 1983 on the "Singles Collection" lp.

That's for sure :-)
The SDS 8 offer a decent reproduction of that sound. In any case, something which sounds good when played live :-).

Re: [Simmons Drums] Simmons SDS8 - SDS9 - SDS 1000 & "Fade To Grey"

2009-07-02 by Thomas Heckmann

Hi guys,

I have this "Fade To Grey" sound programmed as a preset in my SDS V
and it's exactly
the same...and goes way below 50Hz, so beware of your speakers !
Propaganda has kind of the same sound in Dr.Mabuse and it's one of my
favorite Simmons sounds ever :-)
I don't think neither the SDS 9 or the SDS 8 (I own both, too) can do
the same as the SDS V sonically.
The "real" long version of Fade To Grey was released in 1981 on
Canadian Polydor together with We Move,
Frequency 7, Blocks On Block and Tar ! All others 12"s were just the
single mixed in a row twice.
The long version was then included again on The Collection !
Hope that helps calming down the discussion ;-)

Here's another one: i have two different versions of the Tar single
and do you guys know the Frequency 7 track with
vocals and speeded up on the b side ? Just to light the fire even
more...

Best

Thanks a lot for your replies!

Here in Italy a couple of guys are selling their SDSV...they're just a bit expensive :-)

Just to enflame the discussion... :-)
Yessss, you are absolutely right! I forgot about the canadian 12" with the Steve Rodolfo Valentino cover. But that version was also released in the USA on an analogue 12" release (Polydor PX 501, also on cassette, I own both). Btw, the fade-out of the US and canadian versions is shorter than the 12" version on the Collection lp.
Finally, not every 12" contains the fake 12" version. The UK release contains the 7" edit.

Yes, it's one of Visage best tracks, IMHO
