Painting Pads...

Painting Pads...

2008-06-05 by hitnrunrocks

Hello all! I've been lurking awhile and decided to post.I have a nice
SDS-1000 set I scored on eBay late last year and have been thinking of
painting the shells of the pads. These are the SDS 9 style. They are
black, which seems to be plentyful,so I'm not too worried about
decreasing their value...plus I plan to hang onto them.
I'm wondering who has done this and what types of paint/primer work
best?I may do some step by step photos as I go.Any advice will be
appreciated.Thanks in advance.

I painted some black SDS7 pads yellow and they came up really well.

I basically used car/auto paint with a primer. Not sure what country
you're in but the primer was Wattyl Sigma Etch Cream, as far as the
colour goes don't buy cheap stuff, ask for the best car enamel you can
get, it might cost a bit more but it'll be well worth it!

I did 4 pads and 1 can of primer and 1 can of colour enamel was all I
needed, you'll need to do at least 2 coats of the colour enamel to get
a perfect surface.

Hey Guys

Also, I'd probably suggest that before you spray, take the plastic shell off the pad and spray a little bit of your paint onto the inside of the shell. This way you can test to make sure the paint won't have a bad reaction to the plastic and melt it or that!!

I would probably stick clear of Krylon paints etc too. Do like Matt suggested and look at a good quality car paint.

You could also give them a final coat of clear, rub it down and give it a buff and the surfaces should come up mirror finish, if that's what you're into? If you checkout some of the custom guitar building sites around they explain how to do this.

Yeah, good idea, some paint will eat plastic!

I went into a decent paint store and asked one of the experts, I
actualy took a pad in and he knew straight away the best stuff for
the job.

The primer I used was ready paint after 20 minutes, really quick
setting. The paint I let dry for 24 hours before recoating just to
be sure. Darren's suggestion of a clear lacquer is a good idea,
just be careful as SDS9 shells are a pretty tight fit as they are so
any extra coats may make it hard to get them back in.

I'm guessing you know how to pop the shells off an SDS9 pad? You'll
obviously have to do that before you paint them.

On Ya's

Matt.
