In this age of softsynths, wouldn't it be cool to have a Simmons
collection with all the Simmons kits with the original layouts (kind
of like what ReBirth did for the 303 and 909)?
If only we could convince some of the manufacturers to get behind it
(either Arturia, Native Instruments or Steinberg) and get the
blessing of Dave himself. We'd soon be in Simmons heaven.

2007-06-10 by Thomas

Hello Jesper. I don't quite agree with you - or maybe I just don't
understand what you mean by PC rascals.

Why shouldn't they have the real sound? Just because they have a tool
that can give them the sound of Simmons doesn't necessarily mean they
can make proper music with it, right?

For me, there wouldn't be a difference between turning knobs on my
computer and turning knobs on a piece of hardware. That might be
because I have never owned a Simmons kit (although I have had a
chance to buy a SDS V and a SDS 7 (defective, that's why I didn't buy
it). But when even hardcore analog purists have a hard time telling
the difference between a softsynth and the real thing, I think that a
software version of the Simmons kits would be a great idea as I
expect it would come very close to the original.

Respectfully
Thomas

"PC Rascal" is a 17-year old kid into techno music thinking there is no such
things as instruments outside the screen.;)

> Why shouldn't they have the real sound? Just because they have a tool

Most certainly not... They can have all the emulating software they want (if
they pay for it or download shareware that is) - I don't care, but I'm so
fed up with the views that it "sound as good" or "even better" etc. See what
happened here when guitar center started selling their crap kit. People came
here with questions none of us felt like answering...

That's you... :)

Probably! (totally honest here)

To me it comes down to the enjoyment of making music too, not just the sound
that comes out of the speaker. I spent a bunch of hours this weekend
changing every slider in my old ARP Odyssey instead of throwing it out and
going for a soft version. It's not just because I love that old boy but also
because I know I enjoy the slider pushing more than staring at a screen. But
I'm a gear-head so it might just be me... but I don't think so.

As a dane you could compare the prices in "Den Blå Avis" och "Gul og Gratis"
not to mention stores in Copenhagen and you'll see that people have a thing
for the real deal... There must be some reason why people pay 4000 DKK for a
SDS-V if they can download samples and emulate it as good...

Time will tell what happens... :)

I am looking forward to tons of postings in a sensless discussion. As
sensless as the never ending discussions about Windows vs. Mac, real
drums vs. electronic drums, harddisk vs. 2" tape machines, piano vs.
synth, etc etc
Nobody of you will ever become convinced by the other side.

You're not gone win this one on Jesper
Some like the sound, others like owning those beauties
Who gives a F^%K
The MUSIC matters
don't get me wrong, I also fell in love with technology and making the upmost
weird samples and squek skwoink noise
But since there was no limitation my ideas started to drift away
(besides this is a pure personal thought)
I mean I own a 128 Mb Ram 10 outputs 8 Gb with 300 effects Yamaha A3000
sampler
BUt I always had more fun with my sleacy S330 from Roland with none of this
a board
It made me a lot more creative

The things we talk about is gear, and they are supposed to be tools
and that's all there is to it
If you make some good stuff on a tapedeck, and that works for you, don't
let noone tell you what to do and go for that. But if you need a Mac book
dual core
2 Ghz with a 64 in/out sound board with adat wifi and god knows what else
, that's fine to. What matters is: find out what works for YOU

I use both ways, fine for me

Good luck

Berk

Hello Jesper (or should I say: Hejsan Jesper ;-)

"See what

I'm totally with you on that one. I too was appalled when I found out
they were peddeling a pile of junk under the Simmons name.

"To me it comes down to the enjoyment of making music too, not just
the sound
> that comes out of the speaker. I spent a bunch of hours this

Changing sliders didn't get much music made did it? ;-)

It's not just because I love that old boy but also
> because I know I enjoy the slider pushing more than staring at a
screen. But
> I'm a gear-head so it might just be me... but I don't think so."

I think it's you. :-)

But seriously Jesper, I think we represent to different groups.
But I also think that there's enough guys like me out there who would
appreciate a software version.

Some prefer to dial knobs on a piece of hardware, others prefer
dialing on a computer screen. In the end only the music matters (to
me anyway).

Finally Jesper I would like to thank you for keeping this a sober and
friendly discussion. I have heard of people dissing each other and
resolving to namecalling in other forums.

At least I think we can agree to disagree. :-)

See you around

Thomas

Davs, davs! :)

No, but it was a joy afterwards so it did help. And the best thing was that
a polish tech bought all my used sliders for "cheap fixes" on Odysseys in
this neighbourhood...

Fine, no problem with me! :)
"hi group, my name is Jesper and I'm a gear head..."

> But seriously Jesper, I think we represent to different groups.
But I also think that there's enough guys like me out there who would

That wasn't my concern, I think soft synths serves a purpose for everyone
who needs those to get a cheap alternative into music making. But I've never
ever understood the concept of cloning real gear. That's like selling
posters of Mona Lisa and saying you get the same feeling as looking at the
original. My point is; Make a new cool poster instead, that everyone likes
despite the non-historical approach...

> Some prefer to dial knobs on a piece of hardware, others prefer
dialing on a computer screen. In the end only the music matters (to
me anyway).

I doubt most people would go with the screen if they had the chance to
choose. But once again... it's probably just this retro-bastard who is
narrow-minded enough. ;)
And regarding "only music matters" it's true when you think of the final
product. I have a lot of "soft" records too which are great, but as a music
maker myself I would probably never be doing music if the only option was
this crappy PC and a bunch of cracked software programs and a knob box...

> Finally Jesper I would like to thank you for keeping this a sober and
friendly discussion. I have heard of people dissing each other and
resolving to namecalling in other forums.

Thanks! I'm doing my best after a good start from listowner Scott left the
responsibility to me and left... (still no word I'm afraid)

> At least I think we can agree to disagree. :-)

Certainly... I don't like "fleskesteg" or trying to sort out the
differencies between the 10 DKK and the 20 DKK coins either... :)
