buzzing power supply with 2nd hand M15

buzzing power supply with 2nd hand M15

2008-11-12 by elemental

I just received a Model 15 VCO I bought 2nd hand, shipped from Italy
to UK. When plugged in (and double checked its all correct) to the
power supply in my Analogue SOLUTIONS case I get nothing but a buzzing
from the power supply. If I take it out all is fine again. I've had
this before with loose power connections so I guess its some sort of
grounding issue? I checked the module over and cant see any loose
chips or wires.

Any suggestions?
Thx

Are u saying the VCO does not function, that it's silent and it makes
the PSU buzz, or are you saying it operates and the PSU busses along
with it?

Which model to you have: the Rev 1 series or the Rev. 2 series?

If 1: Are you making sure the red band is UP on the module side and
conversely the correct orientation on the A. Sll side??

If it is operating, just making the PSU buzz you're probably very
close to the edge of the current rail on the A. Sol power spply.

Hi Peter

Its not functioning at all. All the outputs of the M15 (and an AFG I
also tested while the M15 was plugged in) seem to output the buzz of
the ower supply. It seems to be tripping the power supply as nothing
else functions. If I take it out everything is fine again.

I also tried taking a couple other modules out in case it was
overloading the supply. Hope its not bruk! :-/
And yes the red band is up, and the connector is keyed at the other end.

Thanks

Oh and its the Rev 1, with the board sticking out at the back.

Re: buzzing power supply with 2nd hand M15

OK, done some more testing with this today, and it seems that
everything else works, and actually the buzzing power supply doesnt
seem to be a problem - seems pretty much the same with or without the
M15 plugged in. My problem is that the M15 outputs a buzz (seems to be
the same frequency as the power supply buzz) which starts with
distortion then decays to a more sine-like buzz. Its def not the
oscillator tho, as tuning makes no difference, and seems to be pretty
much every jack socket that makes that noise.

The guy I bought it from has said its cool to send it back and get a
refund, but would be good to find out if its actually got broken in
transit or if there is some kind of compatibility issue with the A.Sol
case/power supply.

Re: buzzing power supply with 2nd hand M15

Ok. I think I've worked out what happened. The guy who sold it to me
sent it with ribbon cable attached. I assumed that the power end would
be the right way round. Well, I compared it to some other cables I had
lying around. Looks like it goes the other way... anyway, I've tried
with some other cables (I assume all the right way round now) and all
I get is some DC click when I connect any of the outputs. I think I
burnt it :-(

If I have, is there any way to repair it?

Thx
