I have been looking over Ken Stone's neat version of Electronotes VCO 
Option #1.  I was thinking how it could be put behind a MOTM style 
panel.  As Ken's note says, "This is one of those PCBs than can be 
assembled in a number of different ways to suit the builder's panel 
space or "maximum knobs" requirements."  With this panel version the 
waveshapers (1 chip) are omitted in favor of packing a nice VCO into a 
1U panel space.  The features are somewhat like the MOTM-310 VCO, but 
there are two different frequency control inputs, both attenuated.  The 
FM input can be switched between the exponential FM DC input and the 
linear FM AC input.  One of the Serge-like reversible attenuators is 
used for the CV input.  Finally, one input jack serves a dual purpose, 
being switched between SYNC and PWM.  This panel is almost identical in 
layout to my Mixer-Comparator, with 3 pots, two switches, and 6 jacks.

Not sure when I may get around to building these (I want two), but I'm 
pretty keen on the concept.  Just wanted to share my idea.

I finally finished building the combination dual Little LFO, dual Little 
EG module.  It came out quite well.  I plan to take photos and post 
them.  The most unusual aspect of the panel design is the placement of 
LEDs and switches to the lower right corner of each pot.  These are not 
labelled on the panel with the benefit that you can choose different 
placements.  Each module (LFO or EG) has two pots, one switch and one 
LED.  On the EG the switch selects AD/AR output.  I had planned to use 
the LFO switch for TRI/SQU output selection, but changed it to a range 
switch.

This panel idea lets you have 4 of these modules in a 2U panel.  I gave 
up the SQU output on the LFO and the separate AD and AR outputs on the EG.

With the Little LFOs on the top there is no clearance problem with 
mounting rails, because of the smaller board size.  If the EG boards 
were put on top, there would be a clearance problem and the boards would 
have to be milled down a tad.  If you put switches in the lowest 
positions (which I did), they have to operate side-to-side and there is 
a tight fit next to the jack.  The switch has to be installed before the 
jack.  It's not an optimal location for switches, so near to the jacks, 
but it works and I opted over putting LEDs there, so low on the panel.

The extra PC pads for power jumpering makes it easy to daisy-chain power 
across all four modules, so you only need one power connector.

The only problem with my original panel FPD is that it had 3/8" holes 
for the pots.  The Oakley pots have a slightly larger diameter.  I 
updated the FPD file for 13/32" hole size, which is what I drilled out to.

If you are planning to get Little LFOs, check out my panel design.  You 
can edit it for four of them.  You can choose SYNC inputs vs. SQU 
outputs, maybe having two of each. You only need to edit labels.  The 
same could be done for 4 EGs, with the caveat about top clearance.

I actually built one of the original Electronotes Multiphase Waveform 
Animators for my 1980's era synth.  Would appreciate more comments on

I have done only one (quad low pass gate).  The PCB fit quite nicely
on one of my 3 pot long brackets.  I ran the PCB deep.  Now that I
have my modular brackets I might have oriented the PCb up and down. 
But, the process was fairly easy as all the pots and such are planned
for off board mounting, like CGS stuff.

The main idea of "waveform animation" is to impart dynamism to the sound 
that is independent of pitch.  The MPWA accomplishes this by sawtooth 
phase shifting, which sounds something like pulse width modulation but 
different because the harmonic series is different for sawtooths.  (I 
also built a complex pulse modulator from Electronotes, all those years 
ago.)  Here is an MP3 I just made, a 2-minute excerpt from a very 
ancient recording over 20 years ago on cassette tape.  The recording 
quality leaves much to be desired, but it will serve to get the idea 
across.  This was done with one VCO, droning on the same pitch 
throughout -- yes I was a rabid minimalist and the piece is 30 minutes 
long -- and driving the Multiphase Waveform Animator (Lester Ludwig 
design) with its sawtooth.  The MPWA contained eight LFOs and eight 
sawtooth phase shifters.  It had one input and one output and had no 
controls.  The output was a mix of the original plus all eight phase 
shifts.  In this patch result was processed through a Low Pass VCF with 
a moderate Q setting. There is some modulation of the stereo field.  I 
can't remember all the details.  Most of the richess of the sound comes 
from the animation.

The MPWA would track any frequency changes of the VCO, but the LFO 
frequencies were fixed.  Read Mark Barton's discussion about the MPWA on

A problem with the MPWA was that it worked best with low frequencies, 
such as in my example MP3.  Cynthia's Sawtooth Animator's LFOs can track 
the incoming frequency.  "Low input frequencies mean slower LFOs and 
high frequencies mean faster LFOs - all of them."  And the LFO 
frequencies can be voltage controlled.  Other features include LFO 
outputs (nice for making correlated filter patches), and a pulse 
output.  All intriguing features, to be sure!.

One question I have is about the input level being 5V p-p, which I 
gather is Modcan standard for audio signals.  No doubt it will not be 
difficult to modify the input for 10V p-p MOTM sawtooths.  Likewise I 
wonder if the output level needs boosting as well.  I am very interested 
to see how Dave Wright's conversion goes.

I got around to taking some pictures today of one of my recent 
projects:  2 Oakley Little LFOs and 2 Oakley Little EGs in one 2U 
panel.  There are two pictures of the completed module, one front and 
one back.  This worked out nicely and demonstrated another possible 
switch placement: to the lower right of a pot.  It's not an optimal 
spot, because you tend to hit the switch when adjusting the pot.  But if 
you really need to cram a panel full, such a placement can help.  All 
switches are in the same relative position to the pot, but the EG 
switches (selecting AD/AR output) are horizontally positioned.

i just put an mouser order in for some switchcraft jacks and the needed
pots for the sawtooth animator so it will be prob be a week till I'll have
it up
and running - but you all will be the first to know. i hadn't even thought
about
the 5v/10v situation - all vcos in my system except my thomas henry 566 and
darkstar are 10v - i'll let you know about that.

This is a 1U panel for four passive devices:  1 potentiometer 
(Resistor), 1 Capacitor (1 of 11 values, selected by a rotary switch), 1 
Vactrol, and 1 Diode.  Note that all three terminals of the pot are 
available, with the BOTTOM terminal normalized to ground.  This allows 
it to be used as a 2-terminal rheostat, as for example in a low-pass 
filter configuration with the capacitor.  (Signal into Wiper, with 
Bottom tied to one end of Capacitor through a multiple which provides 
the output.)  Both ends of Capacitor are normally connected to ground.  
Each of the four devices can be used independently.  And they can be 
patched together to make various high and low-pass filters.  The Vactrol 
provides a voltage-controlled resistor.  (I am thinking to add a 470 ohm 
series resistor to the Vactrol LED to limit current.)  I had room for 
two more jacks, so I included a Diode.

I think I will make one of these and try it out.  Unfortunately the FPD 
panel costs $60 US!

i went to -

opened Richard's folder, and then downloaded passives.fpd. depending 
on the browser this can be accomplished either by option-click, or 
control-click then Save File As..., or right-click then Save as... 
etc.

clicking on the passives.fpd link, rather than downloading it, 
results in a blank screen in Safari, but quite possibly utter chaos 
on other browser configurations.

I have a couple of questions about tolerances on FracRack panels I want to
send to Schafer.

 

1.       What tolerance is typically specified for width, holes, etc.?

2.       How much smaller should I make the board to allow assembly?

 

I saw some specs. on a FracRack panel:

 

Deburr outside edges, do not round corners

Light grain, black anodize

tolerances: +/- 0.010 in

Holes +/- 0.005 in

 

Are these reasonable? 

 

Should I just design the panel to be 0.010 inches smaller in width?

WOW, looks fantastic. I'm a bit unclear as to whether some of the  
green circles are for LEDs, or switches, or pushbuttons along the left  
edge (RANDOM INPUT down through CLOCK THRU RATE). Also, I noticed that  
the CLOCK THRU and CLOCK IN labels are centered above the jack, but  
EXT LOAD, EXT RANGE, and RANDOM INPUT are not. Is that because some  
are switches and some are LEDs?

another layer), so green is .25" and tiger print is .375". Doesn't 
really help, huh?
The Ext Load, Range and Random Input have associated switches (LED for 
Random Input, I think). I figured that legending is more obvious than 
the on/off legending. I'm thinking the switched would be left/ right, 
or _towards_ the jack if you want that jack enabled. Is that OK w/ 
everyone? I can add on/ off if you want. I still haven't decided 
whether to do MOTM boxes for the standalone switches or not. I think 
not in this case, as it would make a graphic mess of it.

Thanks for the clarification. I prefer switches that go up/down, not  
left/right. I generally assume (thinking digitally) HIGH = UP = ON,  
LOW = DOWN = OFF. I don't think you need to labels, or boxes, for the  
switches, I think that would just make it look cluttered. I say leave  
it as is.

Is the CLOCK THRU jack simply connected to the CLOCK IN jack? If so,  
this jack could instead be used as an output for shift register B  
(after the INVERT switch), call it SRB OUT. This would allow cascading  
the output from one Klee to the input of another Klee (connect KIee #1  
SRB OUT to Klee #2 RANDOM INPUT) to achieve 32 step sequences. Does  
anybody else think this is a good idea? If you are worried about  
connecting a CMOS output to a jack, there is an unused op-amp that  
could be used as a buffer.

Even if you don't change the legend on the panel, I will likely wire  
mine up this way. I came up with a dozen Klee modifications, but  
implementing them all would require a ridiculous amount of hardware  
changes (I would have to make all new PCBs) and a panel 3 times the  
size of the one you've got. I think I'll stick with the official Klee

I like your idea. That's what I'll do on mine, I think. I think I'll 
keep all legending non-mod, though, as I've found that most people 
don't do mods.

I've made some changes to my JH Interpolating Scanner(s) and have put a new FPD file up on my website. There was an empty spot on my previous panel (what was I thinking?) which I've filled in with an LFO output jack. I also tackled the thorny issue of how to use MOTM-standard Lumex LEDs and get them bright enough to actually see them. The solution isn't simple but it works great.
