Projects in process

Projects in process

2001-11-03 by Mike Denman

Hi Maniacs,
I have always thought that pictures of projects in progress were more
interesting than the finished pictures. After all, most of our cars
look basically the same other than color. So in this spirit of
sharing projects I will post on this site some pictures of a repair I
am doing to the rear end of my 1966 Marcos 1800. The pictures will be
removed after a week or so and hopefully replaced by a new set of
progress pictures. The first picture is of the rear end minus the
tail lights and license plate. You can see the spider cracks in the
right hand side. (actually there are spider cracks on both sides but
the ones on the right are easier to see). Also visible are the repairs
that I originally started to make to the lower panel. The previous
owner had an "E" Jag type exhaust with the attaching brackets
connected directly to the fiberglass. Over time, the heavy exhaust
managed to pull the bolt and fender washer through the fiberglass on
one side and created spider cracks on the other side. The second
picture is a close up of the same spider cracks. The third picture is
of the rear end "gap". The rear panel should be straight across the
back. This picture is an attempt to show that mine has a gap of about
3/16 of an inch on both sides. This type of problem is not that
uncommon on things made with polyester resin since polyester resin
will continue to shrink over time. The fourth picture is the rear end
stripped of paint. Look closely on the right side and you can see a
previous repair (well done) that might account for the heavy spider
cracks on that side. It is not uncommon for spider cracks to appear
some time after the actual "accident". The fifth picture is of the
inside of the truck (boot) stripped of paint and showing the spider
cracks from the inside. The sunlight makes the spider cracks easier
to see on the inside than on the outside. If you look closely you
will notice that some of the spider cracks are darker than the others.
These are spider cracks that were repaired previously by the former
owner. These previous repairs were actually done quite well with only
part of one re-cracking in the former spot. So I have several problems
to fix, the spider cracks and the "flatness" issue. I will now try to
post the pictures and will keep everyone updated on my progress since
this is a fairly common problem and typical repair on fiberglass cars.

Hi Maniacs,
I have moved the photo's of my repair project to an album called,
"Mike Denman's repair project album". Eventually I will write an
article for one of the English club magazines about this project
and go into greater detail. In the mean time, if anyone has any
questions or comments as I progress, feel free to email me at

Hi Maniacs,
I have put a new picture in the project album to replace the photo of
the gap in my rear panel. In the new photo I have put a regular size
pencil in the gap under the straight edge to illustrate the size of
the gap. The pencil just fits in the gap. This are should be flat
with no gap.

Hello Marcos Maniacs, I would like to know if there are any LM600's in the
US? I had on my list for a new car and was looking at the Lotus (0-60 in 4
sec) I finally sold my 83 Porsche Cab, I didn't like the Idea of pulling at a
light and seeing a clone. So the Lotus was my choice because I have seen only
a 5 on the street, but one of my coworkers collects model cars and had a book
and I saw the LM600GT he didn't know what it was but since I have Rovers just
to see the body I knew what it was and had him get me one. I then made up my
mind I wanted one, there is a 98 Viper and a Grand National on my block I
think there should be a nice car here other than my others.

Alvin (TopDogRover) Maybe a LM500 or 400 would be better for me!

Hi Alvin

My Dad has a P5. I can only afford a 66 Marcos with a V6 Capri w/auto.

If I had unlimited funds, an LM Marcos would be on my wish list too.

Thanks Dave, but a problem I have is that I usually get what I want spoiled
from childhood. Although in 1993 I did pass on a brand new 1987 Aston Martin
Lagonda (last new on in the world at Newport Imports Newport Beach
California) for $150.000 I just purchased my home and I did think about it
but being a single parent of three I would have had to have the back seat for
myself. The Porsche I got through a bad deal with a still good friend, I dont
cosign or buy anything of value anymore. Like another friend just got an 1982
Maserati Quattroporte and wanted to know if he could put it in my name if
anything happened to him, ha ha ha never again lesion learned

Hi Alvin,
Welcome to the list!
I can't really answer your question on LM600s in the US, although I
don't think I've heard of one over here.
But, here are two links for UK dealers that could probably hook you up.
Import may be expensive, but it doesn't sound like money is a problem.

http://www.redlinesportscars.com/

http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/paulstephenscars/

Both, have a couple of street LMs in stock.

Hope that helps,

Alvin . . .
What a great collection! However, they're all so common in North America. If you really want something unique, you need my 1970 Mantis in your collection! I guarantee it's the only one in North America. You'll be the only guy on your block to have one.

does. Thanks for the links I guess there isnt a market here because of the

Nose in the air... snobbish car???

2001-11-05 by Jeff Caraway

Hi All,

I have what seems a silly question, but after having other people see my car finally, one comment keeps popping up.

“Is the nose supposed to be that high”?

Now, I think I read somewhere that a Marcos GT is supposed to have a somewhat high nose, but it does seem rather high up to me. And this from an outside perspective, not sunk in behind the wheel. Look at the pictures in the group photo section to see what I am talking about.

Does anyone else’s car have the same characteristics? I think I saw a yellow car in the pictures of the California Marcos gathering that looked as if it did the same thing.

Could it be a spring thing since mine came over as a kit? Maybe mine was actually sprung for a heavier engine or something….

Anyone???.....

Thanks,

Jeff Caraway

Hi Alvin,
I am in North Carolina, and the DMV here is giving me all sorts of
problems with my 1984 GT. It has an early 70s Capri 2.8 liter V6 in it
which doesn't have a hope in hell of passing emissions, but yet, they
still want it to because of the year of the "manufacture". You would
probably face the same thing if you brought over an LM and lived
somewhere with fairly strict DMV requirements. Those dealers might be
able to give you a better idea of what you face.
I'm not sure if they still sell kits for import to the US, but that
could be a possibility. Then you are open to whatever power plant you
want.

BTW, nice collection! I meant to comment on that earlier.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Nose in the air... snobbish car???

2001-11-05 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Jeff,
Looking at the driver's side photo of your car, it does appear that the nose is a little high. The black strip underneath the door should be parallel to the road surface and the gap above the wheels should be the same front and rear. Mind you, it could be an optical illusion, or, if the road surface is sloping, as appears to be the case, the weight could more on the rear causing the nose to lift. I would have expected the V6 engine to be heavy enough to compress the springs to required amount. Either way, the easy way to level the car is to fit Koni adjustable shocks, which allow you to adjust the height by a couple of inches.

Hello Jeff
Hi, am unable to access the Marcos site from my favorites. It worked last

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Nose in the air... snobbish car???

2001-11-05 by Jeff Caraway

Hi Paul,

Thanks for replying!

What you are seeing is not an optical illusion, I assure you. The front is definitely higher than the back.

I think it was about an inch and half higher than the rear. I measured from the bottom of the black strip to the floor of my garage behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel.

I also measured the tire-to-wheel-arch distance to be off about the same amount.

Will the Konis fit in the coil springs on the front?

Right now it has Spax shocks.

Hi All,

I have what seems a silly question, but after having other people see my car finally, one comment keeps popping up.

“Is the nose supposed to be that high221;?

Hello Ron, maybe common to see an SD1, Hillman Super Snipe, or Alpine Coupe,
or even Tiger where are you from? I'm in Los Angeles my Uncle comes over
daily in either his Tiger, or 928 maybe in his Vette (two other drive on my
street everyday) the only other British car I have seen is a MGB and if you
ever ask anyone out here whats a Hillman unless they are over 50 or into
these cars they dont have a clue. Even the son of editor of the Cat Club
(California Association of Tigers) has never seen an Alpine Coupe. My Dart
GT, Chrysler puts on their Spring Fling and in fall the works, Super Birds,
Daytona's and only 2 Darts both V8's. Buick Car show/GM no 65 Cadillacs and
this is in Los Angeles. I see one old Alpha sedan daily for the last three
weeks coming from work kind of small square looking. I even have a 1973
Lambert bicycle with the original tires side wall dry rotted. I may not be
able to get a LM600 but will settle for a LM500. There was to be a Shelby car
show yesterday but there was a lite rain in the morning and I didnt go didn't
expect to see a Cobra sliding in the grass. I was once behind one on the
street it was a 427 I was in a bus test driving the brakes and he stepped
down on the pedal and I could see the body twist awesome even though I dont
care about Fords, AU, UK of US.

Jeff,
I fit the Konis to replace the Spax originals on my car a looooonnnngggg time ago. I bought a new set of springs at the same time but they were the same size as the originals. They were available through the Marcos Owners Club in England for quite a reasonable price but alas, no more. I understand you can get them from Rory McMath at Marcos Heritage Spares though you may need to take out a second mortgage.

Thanks Jeff, with all that clean air in NC I didn't know they tested
emissions, I used to live there from 82-85 in Cherry Point and New River. Its
the same problem I'm having with the 455 in my SD1 the engine is from a 1970
Rivera even if I do make it fuel injection and able to pass emissions I dont
know if they will let it pass.

Huh, that sounds like a plan!

I will probably try and replace the springs as well, since they are VERY rusty.

Do you remember if the front and rear springs the same?

Also, do you remember what model of Koni shocks you got, and where you got them?

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Nose in the air... snobbish car???

2001-11-06 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Jeff,
Dave Barton recently posted that the Spring rates for the metal chassis cars are 250 lbs front and 170 lbs rear. That sounds about right from what I can remember.
Believe it or not, but I'm pretty sure I still have the original packaging for the Koni shocks, full of spare Volvo engine parts at home in Aurora. When I go home next weekend, I'll check to see if the model number is printed on the box or on the shocks themselves. Either way, I'll let you know next week. As I said, I got them through the Marcos Owners Club for a very reasonable price. I recall that Jem Marsh kicked up a major fuss with Koni because the club was undercutting his prices significantly, basically supplying them at cost. So Koni more or less doubled the price to the club, which continued to sell them until around the time that Rory McMath started Marcos Heritage Spares. I don't recall exactly how much they cost me (though I can look it up on the weekend), but it was probably 15 years ago and they weren't cheap. I shudder to think how much they'd be now.
I only put around 2000 miles a year on the Marcos, and the shocks are still working fine. The previous Spax shocks wore out in only a few years. However, I put leathercloth boots around the springs when I put the Konis on the car to prevent dust and grit from wearing the shafts, and it seems to have worked very well.
I looked through the latest Marcos Owners Club magazine last night to see if the shocks were listed in the spares section but they weren't. However, as an indication of Rory's mark-ups, the windshield that I bought through the club last year is listed at more than twice the price from Rory.

I understand you can get them from Rory McMath at Marcos Heritage Spares though you may need to take out a second mortgage.

Subject: [MarcosManiacs] Nose in the air... snobbish car???

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info!
Do those guys have a website?
Were the springs pretty much direct replacements, or did they require
any mods to fit?
How about the shocks?

Hey Jeff,
WWW.SUMMITRACING.COM is the web site ,they are the biggest
aftermarket speedshop in the world. The springs are a direct
replacement . The shocks might require you to find longer sleeves to
go through the top and bottom bushings of the shock. The shocks I got
had eyes on both ends(it was previously modified for racing) the rear
shocks on your car probably have a stud on the bottom but I am sure
you can get both styles.
                  Cheers Dave #5577

Hey Jeff,
WWW.SUMMITRACING.COM is the web site ,they are the biggest
aftermarket speedshop in the world.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Nose in the air... snobbish car???

Hi guys,

I took another look at the club magazine last night and found that the
shocks and springs were listed after all at £82 and £28 each respectively,

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Nose in the air... snobbish car???

2001-11-07 by Ronald McLeod

Guys . . .

I have just acquired and installed a set of rear shock absorbers for my
Mantis. I got them through Rory MacMath. They are Spax adjustables. Not
surprisingly, Spax did not have a listing for the Mantis, but Rory was able
to find a Mantis, and measure the shocks on it, and then worked with Spax to
find a suitable shock absorber. Cost including shipping was GBP300 - about
US$450.

Hi guys,

I took another look at the club magazine last night and found that the
shocks and springs were listed after all at £82 and £28 each respectively,
though the brand of shocks was not identified.

Regards,
        Paul

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Projects in process

2001-11-07 by Ronald McLeod

Alvin . . .
I live near Toronto. I think this area must be a magnet for classic British cars. Every September we have a 'British Car Day' show - this year there were over 800 cars turned up. At the show, I saw at least one of each of the models you have in your collection. I think there were a lot of British cars that were imported into Canada that didn't get to the U.S. during the 50s and 60s.

Adjustable shocks....

2001-11-07 by Jeff Caraway

OK,
This is a silly question I know, but how can you tell if you have adjustable shocks and how do you adjust them?
My Spax have little gold screws on the side near the bottom of the shock (the end near the ground). Does that mean they are adjustable?
If I wanted to lower my nose, what would I have to do besides compress the spring around the shock?

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Adjustable shocks....

2001-11-07 by Ronald McLeod

Jeff . . .

On my Spax Shocks, there are 2 adjustments:

1. The barrel of the shock is threaded, and the bottom support ring for the
spring runs up and down on the threaded barrel. I can screw the support
ring up and down to vary the distance from the support ring to the bottom
shock absorber mounting. This varies ride height.
2. At the bottom of the shock, there is a little screw set into the barrel
of the shock. You can turn this to vary the amount of damping (works
equally on both directions - extension and compression - and rebound from
both). Full counterclockwise is the softest setting. There are 28
positions - when you are turning the screw with a screw driver, you feel a
little detent every 45 degrees. A clockwise adjustment of 28 detents gives
maximum hardness. Spax say that you can keep turning beyond this, but it
makes no difference to the ride, and may result in damage to the shock's
internals.

The above is for the shocks that I just got. If yours are older, the
details may differ, but I suspect the same basic ideas hold.

OK,
This is a silly question I know, but how can you tell if you have adjustable
shocks and how do you adjust them?
My Spax have little gold screws on the side near the bottom of the shock
(the end near the ground). Does that mean they are adjustable?
If I wanted to lower my nose, what would I have to do besides compress the
spring around the shock?

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Adjustable shocks....

2001-11-07 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Jeff,

The lower exterior portion of the shock body is threaded, and the lower
spring seat is threaded to allow the seat to move up or down the body of the
shock. The weight of the car is borne by the springs, so the height of the
lower spring seat determines the height of the body.

The adjustment screws on the Spax shock varies the stiffness of the ride
from soft to firm

To lower the nose of your car the required amount, the height of the lowest
threads of the adjustable shock would have to be an inch and a half lower
than the height of the spring seat on your current shocks. If that is not
possible, you could raise the height of the rear of the car to compensate.
Either way, you would have a car that was level.

Guys . .

Cost including shipping was GBP300 - about
US$450.

Paul . . .

Two rear shock absorbers GBP250. Shipping GBP50. Keep in mind that the
rear shocks on a Mantis are quite different that those on your GT. The
Mantis shocks are 21 inches long overall, with over 7 inches of suspension
travel - a regular saloon-car ride!

Konis were not offered as an option (nor did I think to ask).

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Adjustable shocks....

2001-11-08 by steinpom@shaw.ca

If Your shocks are adjustable then they will be threaded on the outside of the body. The coil-over spring will be sitting on a perch that can be screwed higher or lower on the shock, thus compressing or decompressing the spring. The shorter your spring becomes, through compression, the lower your car will sit, and the stiffer the spring will seem.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Nose in the air... snobbish car???

2001-11-08 by Spalding, Stephen (US - San Francisco)

Jeff
I've been keeping up on all the email with regards to your question. Several years ago, I replaced my shocks with adjustable Spaxs. We tested the car in hard low speed turns and at speed 100+. The general feeling was that tire grip (in the low speed turns) was actually better with the adjustment set at the mid point on the shocks and the car was much better at speed ; with a 3/4" drop (as measured from the flat glass bar between the wheels). This slight nose down in position seem to make the car much more solid at speed, so after several adjustments and some fun speed runs that is were we left it. My car is one of the eleven build with the BL TR6 engine, so the weight is different than your car and tires, wheels, front air dams, frame type and other suspension parts can make huge differences on the GT's, because after all the are very light (by road car standards). I suggest road testing, there is just too much differences in these cars for any fixed formula.
Good Luck, and keep us posted!

Subject: [MarcosManiacs] Nose in the air... snobbish car???

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Nose in the air... snobbish car???/ Adjustable shocks

2001-11-08 by Jeff Caraway

Hi Stephen and all that replied to my emails on this,

Thanks for the info!!!

I have found that my Spax shocks do allow adjustment in stiffness, but not in ride height.

I think I will be seeking out some fully adjustable replacements in the near future so that I can get the nose down a little and not have to hear that question.. “Is the nose supposed to be that high?”

It probably will handle better as Stephen suggests as well.

So many Marcos projects….. J

Okay Jeff, my 66 has a Spitfire type sway bar at the front lower crossmember
under the radiator.
I think most cars benefit from a swaybar.

Mine doesnR17;t have one at all and I can’t really see fitting one on as the radiator fills the whole front of the frame and would probably be in the way.

Jeff,
Good question(is the nose too high?) but lets think "out of the box"
on this one---Don't lower the front, RAISE the rear :-)
Remember in the 70's the way people jacked up their cars rear ends,
just do the same with yours and no one will say the front is too
high :-)
Of course we'll kick you out of the Maniacs, but thats another
story...
BTW Keep me posted on the active suspension upgrade if you do it,
also have you asked Rory about the bump-steer upgrade as well?
I'm going to a tech session with the local Triumph club this Sat AM,
do you have any ? you want me to ask them for you---you do have the
Triumph front suspension/brakes/steering don't you?

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Nose in the air... snobbish car???/ Adjustable shocks---OR???

2001-11-09 by Jeff Caraway

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had considered raising the rear, but thought it might degrade the handling of the car.

It would definitely help with exhaust clearance though!

I’ll probably end up putting height adjustable shocks all around and find the best setting (whether it be lowering the front or raising the back).

I haven’t asked Rory about the bump-steer upgrade due to its expense, but might consider it more if I hear more about it.

Regarding the Triumph parts:

Yep, mine has the Triumph front suspension, steering, and brakes like most GTs. Mine differs in that it has the 14 inch alloy Mantula style wheels which supposedly required a custom hub. Rory says that the hub was specially built for those wheels, but I’m not sure what’s different.

Have a lop-sided car?? Well, provided the frame isn’t twisted or bent (let’s hope that isn’t the case!), it is probably due to sagging springs on the driver’s side. Since that side was probably used more, the springs may have gotten much more wear. I have seen this on some older (60s) domestic cars and the remedy is to replace the tired spring(s). Or, if you have adjustable shocks….

Anyone else have any suggestions???

Re: OK, let's do sway bars now....

2001-11-09 by Don Lattimer

Jeff,

Mine doesn't have one either. Not even a place to mount it on the
lower wishbones. My wishbones were chromed back in '76 and possibly
different wishbones were used. Do all GT6 front ends have the
mounting brackets for anti-sway bars?? Just curious, cause mine
seems to handle just fine with normal(?) driving.

2001-11-09 by Jeff Caraway

Hi Don,

Mine does have a little hole on the front of the lower wishbones (one has been ripped open though), which is what attracted my attention.

I then broke out my trusty Victoria British Triumph Catalog and found that it was the place for the sway bar to attach.

I don’t know if all GT6s had sway bars, but it looks like that’s the way the lower wishbones came.

On mine though, the radiator sits a little lower than the cross member on which the steering rack is attached, so it doesn’t look like I could fit one on (the sway bar also appears to attach to that cross member). The lower radiator hose would also be in the way, so I guess I’m out of luck on that one.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Nose in the air... snobbish car???

2001-11-26 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Hi guys,

I managed to dig out one of the Koni boxes over the weekend and found the
following code number stamped on it, implying that it's the part number for
the shocks (2 to a box) inside:- 80R - 2365
I'm pretty sure that the front and rear shocks for the Marcos were the same
but I didn't come across the other box to confirm that. I didn't have time
to do a thorough search through all my parts boxes, so I'll take another
look next weekend if I have time.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info!
Do those guys have a website?
Were the springs pretty much direct replacements, or did they require any
mods to fit?
How about the shocks?

Projects in process

2001-12-02 by Mike Denman

I have added three new photo's to the Denman's project album. The
first photo shows the rear end with two coats of primer. The second
picture shows the primer sanded, the car masked, and ready for paint.
The third photo shows my friend Ray Garcia appling the actual paint!
I'm sorry for the lousy quality of the last two photo's. It was
raining hard today and I couldn't open the hanger door to take a good
picture. When the rain stops I will take some better pictures of the
rear end now that it is actually painted. The plan now is to let the
paint cure until Wednesday and then reassemble the rear end.
