sx240 not working

sx240 not working

2016-10-20 by baccisimone@...

Hi to everybody and thank you for letting me in this group.
My cousin gave me an sx240 he bought in 1984.
It doesn't work.
When I switched on the Kawai, sometimes nothing happens, sometime there's a little bip and then nothing, sometimes randomly some buttons are one, something appear on the lcd screen, but with no meaning.
I opened it and it seems that the battery didn't leak, even though it's 32 years old.
Can it be the battery with no charge? If I manage to remove the battery, the sx240 should work the same, without obviously saving changes made? Or it seems something more serious, maybe something electric or electronic?

Thank you in advance.

Have a nice day.

Sim

I meant to say "sometimes some buttons are on".
Sorry.

Have a nice day.

Hi,

If the battery is too low, then the RAM contents will have been lost.
Usually this means all programs in RAM are lost, which may be all there are.
In that case, the CPU should operate normally in terms of what you see on the
front panel and how the switches operate. But if you hit a key you may not
get any sound, since all of the parameters for the programs are gone, and are
more or less random values depending on how the RAM chip comes up.

If there is a rechargeable battery in there, you should remove it in any case,
to avoid damage if it leaks later.

To me, it sounds like you have some other problem that is causing the CPU
to not run properly. I would check the reset signal to the CPU, simply because
it's something you can do with just a meter, assuming you do not have an
oscilloscope.

     Bob

Hi Bob.
Thank you for your suggestions. I'm not an electronic expert, but I'll try to do what you said. The most worrying thing is that when something turns on, it is stuck; I mean, it's not that, without hearing any sound, I can operate on the buttons; they stay on or off, even if I push them. The same for the lcd panel; there's something written on it, but it doesnt' make sense and it is frozen.
Maybe I didn't point it out properly in the first post, I apologize.
So: can the battery down cause such behaviour? Or do you think is something else, and the battery has no fault for such behaviour?

Thanks a lot again.

Have a nice time.

I do not think the battery would cause this behavior,
unless it leaked and damaged other circuits.

With a dead or no battery, the buttons and displays
should operate normally. You just may not hear any
sound when you press a key.

Hi Sim, I'm no electronics expert either, but I wonder if one simple thing to try would be to leave it on for a few hours to let the battery accumulate a charge and possibly correct its voltage. Obviously the NiCad should still be replaced in the longer term, but I used my NiCad battery safely for several months before I got around to replacing it, so I wouldn't imagine that leaving it on for a while would pose any great risk, given that it hasn't yet leaked. Good luck! Gabe.
