Hi Sim, I'm no electronics expert either, but I wonder if one simple thing to try would be to leave it on for a few hours to let the battery accumulate a charge and possibly correct its voltage. Obviously the NiCad should still be replaced in the longer term, but I used my NiCad battery safely for several months before I got around to replacing it, so I wouldn't imagine that leaving it on for a while would pose any great risk, given that it hasn't yet leaked.
