I love every aspect of the cmi
first of all the sounds you can produce with it....no other piece of equipment can replace it.
than there is the design of the cabinet.,klavier enz.
I'm into (industrial) design myself.
It's a joy to work with gear that was designed with such an amount creativity.
(soft and hardware)
I also like to recreate some of the soundpalletes of the past.
Vintage gear is the way to go for me.

Where are the other users sound demo's ?
C'mon where talking musical instruments here : )

Yeah I keep going back and forth on the cmi. I am hoping it would be
good at creating a textural sound with some meat to it. All other synths
have a sheen to them. But I feel the cmi has a depth and grit to the
sound that makes me interested, but im not sure Im into the price right
now. Could I just fake it with something cheaper is what Im thinking

Forget faking a CMI. I tried it for years. It's the same with a MiniMoog and all the other vintage synths that became favourites. You can't completely replace them. Some sounds can, but the sounds that you can't reproduce, that's the part that makes it a favourite vintage.
A CMI IIx is very cheap right now and I'm pretty sure it will go up in price. (I was a vintage synth specialist back in the 90's and still am a collector. I did a lot of testing and comparing, for myself and for customers.)
With that said, I can make a suggestion. Try a Kurzweil K2X00. For some sounds a MicroWave (The fisrst version with software ver.2) comes to my mind. Less powerfull sound but for spacey Fairlight-type sounds a Kawai K1 is pretty neat. I personally like them a lot and have all previous mentioned in my collection.
A Roland D-50 comes also to my mind and last but not least Ensoniq SD-1.
Hope this helps. Please let me know what you end up with

Peter Kersten.

The K1 was my first proper keyboard... I got bored with it quite quickly, back in the day, but I would love to get hold of one again... possibly a K1 mkII

'cmiPhone' and 'cmiPad' apps.

2010-12-03 by Peter Vogel

As a little sideline, we've been developing 'cmiPhone' and 'cmiPad' apps.

These are not intended to compete with a real CMI, but to give the ‘flavour’ of the old girl.

This app is nearing completion and we are seeking a small number of people to participate in beta testing.

That is, we would like a select group to try out the new apps, give us your comments and report bugs.

To participate, you will need to own an iPhone and/or iPad.

If you would like to take part, please send an email admin@fairlightinstruments.com.au briefly stating why you’d like to participate.

Testing will commence within the next week and continue until launch in January 2011.

As numbers are limited, we cannot accept all applicants.

Cheers,

Peter Vogel

A brilliant way to introduce a generation of younglings to the wonders of the CMI. I hope it includes lots of classic IIx and III samples, along with a suitably amusing update to Page R. I can't wait.

Can't wait for the Android version ;-)

This might actually inspire me to get off my backside and learn how do
develop for Android, if you want a hand with that...

Hi Gordon

It will have the entire IIX rev 1.3 sound library, a goodly proportion of which is available straight away, with the rest being "unlockable". The sounds (and demo sequences) were gotten direct from the original floppies, so no stupid conversions.. It sounds great

Page R is running well, and everything looks very, very nice.

The "Pièce de résistance" is page D. Not only does it look fabulous, you can change the viewing angle(s) by tilting the iPhone (my idea!)..

Keep you posted..

The trouble is that the Android marketplace is extremely fragmented - it would have to work on Android 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 at an assortment of different screen resolutions (not to mention various processor speeds). This is one instance where Apple's homogeneous product lineup really helps.

Hm, Android 1.6, y'say? Will it run on Mac System 7 on 68000 processors
  too? ;-)

The Motorola Backflip (Android 1.5) and Devour (1.6) were both released at AT&T stores in the United States in early 2010. The HTC Droid Eris was marketed until the middle of 2010 by Verizon with Android 1.6.

In part, this is why popular games such as Angry Birds are free for Android -- the publisher cannot guarantee compatibility. A Fairlight app could well face similar issues which could negatively impact the brand.

They're ancient though. In the US, mobile phones haven't really taken
off in a significant way, and phone companies are selling very poor
service at vastly inflated prices - $9.99 per day for unlimited 3G isn't
a good deal when in the UK we consider 50p per day to be just about
reasonable ;-)

If you stick with 2.1 or newer, everything should be fine.
