Q133 card and lithium battery

Q133 card and lithium battery

2008-08-26 by billyrockplay

Hello Fairlight people

My QWERTY is not responding and I was wondering if replacing the battery would restore
functionality. Ed Hughes suggests replacing battery. Have re-seated cards to no avail. Comp
boots up fine but no response from QWERTY. My question; can I replace a 3.6V 1500mAh
Lithium Wafer Cell with a 3.6V 1700mAh Lithium Wafer Cell? Radio shack says no problem
but I figured I'd ask my Fairlight mates. I have a series III running rev 5.14. My machine has
been so reliable and integral to my music making since (man, its been awhile) - well since I
got it.
Though I don't post often I visit this forum daily, reassured that others are still making music
with this machine as well.
Peace and thanks from NY

Hi guys - my update. I was able to borrow a QWERTY keyboard from NYU (no telling what
injuries this particular kybrd has suffered while institutionalized) - where Suzanne Vega's
old series III resides but when I got back to my studio and plugged it into my machine,
trying both ports on the music kybrd and on back of the cpu I got the same result (no
response). There is a wild card I haven't mentioned but will now. When I opened up the
front of the machine to re-seat the q133 card there were little bits of the air filter all over
the inside of the machine (the filter having apparently disintegrated and been flown all
over the insides by the fans). I don't know what result this might cause but I cleaned up
the insides, re-seated all the cards and am still a Fairlight junkie without a fix.
I am going to replace the battery - previous battery installed Dec 2003 - in hopes that
this will clear things up. Oh - and yes Laurent I did check the back of the CPU and all
voltages appear to be ok. Thanks for all your responses and suggestions my Fairlight
brothers. I'll keep you posted.

Here's a suggestion for you:

Under the machine, where those desintegrated air filters are, there is
a row of small fuses, including at least one for the keyboard. You may
check those as well. You can take off the bottom cover by unscrewing
all the screws on the white bottom plate. I recommend doing this while
the machine is resting on the small side where the cards are, not with
the machine on its top because in that case all the mess with fall
into the interior if it hasnt already.

I had the same problem with the air filter today and just finished
cleaning the unit. I now have a display issue but that is likely a
wrongly inserted card. I have a Q356 and it was in either of the Q256
slots. Probably I used the wrong slot.

Re: Q133 card and lithium battery

2008-08-29 by billyrockplay

Hi Harald - thanks for the suggestion, I will check them but wouldn't the LEDs on the back
of the machine indicate if something was amiss with fuses? Also - I should have
mentioned in description of my problem that over the past month or so the machine
would freeze (meaning QWERT would become unresponsive) while working. This seemed
to happen while tending to other matters (such as recording audio tracks or mixing, fixing
using DAW Digital Performer. in hindsight it would seem the card (or whatever is the
nature of the prob is) was on its way out. I would re-boot Fairlight and all would be well
for a while.
As far as the battery - a new dilemma:
I have a question about the battery. This is the battery

I am determined to keep my III functioning as long as I am able to make music.

Re: Q133 card and lithium battery

update: borrowed QWERTY, replaced (correct) battery on Q133 card, re-seated
cards,
checked fuses- nothing has helped so far. Maybe the machine is not fully
booting up. In
the text line at top of DIR page there is a small space right after the word
"fairlight." need
some help diagnosing problem. not sure Q133 card is the source of my problems.
Thanks
people
and yes - if there was a way to have modern storage devices easily incorporated
into a
series III, rev 5.14 i would be interested.
