Has anyone on this list seen prints made from this paper? Or, perhaps,
Ilford's ILFOSPEED RC DIGITAL? I'm interested in hearing how they
compare with both traditional analog/optical as well as inkjet prints.

I have seen it and had a test file done (we are an Ilford dealer, so
hence the connection). It is basically the exact same paper as their
FB paper except they have adjusted the sensitivity of the emulsion to
react to lasers from a Lightjet, etc. Same glossy air dried looking
surface, same weight. Labs in NYC and Montreal are beta testing right
now.

Sounds good. It will be interesting to see how prints made through
this process -- assuming other things being equal -- compare to inkjet
prints on the new fiber gloss/luster papers. Also, I wonder how much
of increase in print costs there will be over the RC paper currently
used by places like mpix, since not only will the paper cost more but
also the washing, drying, and flattening process must be more involved.

The only thing that looked strange was there was some white text in
the image, that fogged out (blur edges). I here the price range will
be over $300 for a 16x20, but for those labs that have had a Lightjet
for years it may be less since they have recouped the initial cost so
far. One lab is using a new fiber base processor designed by Hostert
(I think) otherwise you would need to guess where to cut the roll so
you can tray or trough process by hand. Did I mention we are talking
about 60" wide rolls right now?

Re: Ilford Galerie FB Digital

2006-11-14 by Tim Atherton

Bob Carnie at Elevator Digital in Toronto is one who is testing the
paper (not Montreal I think?)

He's very impressed with it.

They were already doing digital fibre B&W on their Lambda, but I
understand that with a custom lightjet paper now, it's even better.

I think their prices will probably remain the same - not 100% sure?
(They are on his site www.elevatordigital.ca ) A 16x20 is currently
$90.00 (cdn), 30x50 - $325.00)

If you look on apug.org, you should find some posts on the paper and
Bob's responses

www.modernage.com is ready to print on this paper today. the model
nubmer is SP888P. You need to email them or call them.

RGB or grayscale to film recorder

2006-11-20 by Mark Savoia

I know this is a bit off topic but just wanted to get a feel what
most people think is the correct file to send to a film recorder when
a black and white neg is being output. Does a 8 bit RGB file (with
lack of color in it) have more "information" in it then a 8 bit
grayscale image? I know it will be a smaller file size but is there
info in an RGB file that would help to make a better black and white
negative? The software RIP for the film recorder will take either.

Hi Mark,

If the BW conversion results in R=G=B, then all three channels are the
same, i.e., contain the same information. You can prove this to
yourself by turning each channel into a layer and compare
with "difference" in the layers palate. The difference in information
is prior to conversion to BW, but once it is R=G=B any channel is equal
to the converted Gray scale file.
