I have gone through the archives and found your suggestion, Clayton, to set the alignment to a lower number, so I set it to #2 as you had. I am finding the dither pattern different, more horizontal now, but not really any better. any other suggestions? I'm losing my mind over this (not to mention ink/paper)! Thank you, Sarah

I'm losing my mind over this (not to mention >ink/paper)! I understand your frustration (been there, got the t-shirt and the coffe mug). I can't find any earlier posts in this topic, so I don't know exactly what the problem is (there are two kinds of banding). Dither banding is very small banding that usually only shows up in certain zones, ususlly dark ones around II or III. I was never able to totally get rid of this, but using the low alignment number minimized it to where a glass was needed to see it. Microbanding is more noticeable and occurs everywhere regardless of zone. This is usually caused by a clogged nozzle. Does your problem fit into either of these? Hi Clayton..thanks for your reply. I did a nozzle check and that doesn't appear to be the issue. What I'm seeing in the print is both a horizontal and vertical banding pattern in a large area of midtone, though I'm not seeing it in all areas. I'm just stumped. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Clayton Jones" <cj@...> wrote:

Sounds like the screen door effect from some odd resolution. What's the resolution of the image? Test by changing the resolution to 360 or 720 with resampling on.

Sarah, >I did a nozzle check and that doesn't appear to be the issue. What >I'm seeing in the print is both a horizontal and vertical banding >pattern in a large area of midtone, though I'm not seeing it in all >areas. Hmmm...I've never seen or heard of such a thing. It might be something in the image that a res change might fix, as John suggested. Does it do it with other images? > Does it do it with other images? Well, there's the rub. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I used to think it happened when I did too much post-processing (I tend to take normally exposed images and add a lot of contrast with curves), but I did very little to this image and it doesn't make sense to me that only part of the image shows this pattern (Half of a nude woman...the other half looks fine...same tones.). A previous image was worked up much more and printed flawlessly in BO. So anyway, I'm trying the up-res right now and will let you know if it helps. Crossing my fingers. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Clayton Jones" <cj@...> wrote:

With QTR an image with a resolution of around 675+- will have that screening effect. Resample it to 720 image is fine. I think it's a bug in QTR.

okay...kindergaarten question: I resampled to 720, and the image on my monitor took a jump. But in the print dialogue I assumed I would have to reduce the print size to fit the paper after that but nothing changed there. side note: no banding with QTR and this image, but the blacks don't compare to BO, which is why I don't use QTR much. I ama huge BO printing fan and normally have no issues with it. Sometimes this whole process is really discouraging. ~sigh~ on that pitiful note I'm off to sleep this round away. Well, no success with the up-res. I still can't correct that part of the image that has the "screen door effect". It is really puzzling and frustrating. If anyone has any further suggestions I'd be much obliged. I hate to scrap this image becuase I can't print it satisfactorily. Sarah - is the "screen door" effect something you can see in the image on the monitor if you look closely, or only something that shows up in the print?

I'm wondering if it could be a working space issue? What working space are you using? CONVERT to a different one to see if it helps. Sorry running out of ideas!

John - The reason I asked about whether or not she could see it on the monitor is because from time to time, I have found a similar pattern that looks like an larger "screen door" effect in the dark tones when using certain sensors at higher ISO ratings. Just a thought...

Sarah This may be a silly suggestion but have you tried printing on different paper? I noticed this myself a little while ago.... I know it probably *shouldn't* make the slightest difference - but it's easy to try and it eliminates one variable! Good luck anyway - hope you got some rest! Andy

Another silly question; I haven't seen anyone ask the most obvious one, maybe I just missed it back there: are you printing Uni or Bidirectional? Even if you've been able to print bidiretional for most images, this one may be setting up an interference type pattern because of a previously un-noticeable amount of mis-registration between the outgoing and returning headsweeps. So if you haven't done so already, turn it off and see if that helps Steven Karafyllakis --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, andy <andy@...> wrote: > > Sarah > This may be a silly suggestion but have you tried printing on different > paper? Hi All...and thank you so much for your suggestions. I don't know what I would do w/o this forum. I seemed to have solved the problem, but I wish to heck I knew what did it. I did try another paper...same result. I also checked to see if there was evidence in the on-screen image...none. I did put a new Eboni cartidge in, though that was before the different paper and there was identical banding on that paper too. The other cartridge was brand new as well, so I don't know if maybe it wasn't sitting right or what. Or even if that what's did it. I also changed back to my usual wworking space, but I had been in that space when this was happening before, so not sure that had anything to do with it. I also reprocessed the raw image in a slightly different manner, but frankly, I doubt that was it. But who knows. So your guess is as good as mine. I wish there had been a clear-cut resolution, becuase I have a feeling it will happen again. It has in the past. Just not this bad. Thanks once again! Hi! Just thought I'd let you all know that I got three images in the August issue of Black and White Photography Magazine. That's the British one, not the american photography collector magazine. The front page of the magazine and the three selected images are shown on my web-site: http://daniel.staver.no Although it's just a little entry in the reader section it's still the first time any of my work is published, so I'm really excited about this! I sent them twelve prints made with the 2100 and UT7 inkset, Paul Roark's carbon curve on PremierArt Hotpress paper. After they selected three of the images I sent them grayscale TIFF files. Seems like color management worked very well as the magazine print match both what I see on my screen and on my own prints very well. -- Daniel Staver http://daniel.staver.no

I'm preparing a portfolio for Lenswork, and I noticed there was a competition in Black and White Photography that I could participate in. I'm also going to hold a small exhibition in a local coffeeshop in october, which I really look forward to. I'd like to try more magazines, but we just don't get that many here in Norway, so I don't really know any others. Any other things I could try? -- Daniel Staver http://daniel.staver.no

Daniel, Congratulations! FYI - I was lucky[?] enough to have 2 of my pictures chosen - from 72 submitted - for a Merit Award in the B&W Special Portfolio issue. Of course, I submitted 6 portfolios each with 12 images, so imagine the thrill! To the point, the single issue submissions were over by May so the next opportunity will be in the portfolio contest. Try to keep your portfolios quite narrow in scope with very similar style and subject matter as my submissions were grouped by very general criteria. The ones that were chosen [pages 113-114] were of manequins in store windows in NYC and the rest of the portfolio was other NYC images. I was so excited by my being published that I started a website - http://www.omages.com, to try to capitalize on my newfound "success". I also submitted a portfolio to Lenswork via their bonus gallery program on Lenswork Extended [the CD version of the magazine with many extras - a fabulous vehicle for learning about and viewing content from Lenswork] and am awaiting some response. The editor of Lenswork - Brooks Jensen - waxes poetically regarding making photographic art available to the masses, and he has done that in many ways through his magazine and the Extended CD. In fact, he asked readers to participate in what he called "The Experiment", where he allowed us to download some of his images, then shake them up in Photoshop or other editing programs, and return them to the magazine. They were shown in the Extended issue for Lenswork 64, and again I was gratefully surprised to have mine included in these submissions. Next, I want to submit images to Camera Arts, and maybe Focus magazine, though I think they want you to advertise in their mags along with submissions, but I may be wrong about that. I'm sure other members of this group have more information. Anyway, good luck! I'm sure that your talent and persistence will reward you in many ways.
