[Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

[Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

2004-01-22 by bobphoto

I have come to the conclusion after reading this forum for some time that the only good method of printing BW images is to use quadtone unless you are satisfied with BO printing. Is this true? I wish it weren't because I would like to see the 4000 or 1280 as the ideal color/bw solution.

I disagree. A "good" method is provided by ImagePrint (which I'm currently
using) or QuadTone RIP. That said, the "best" solution probably IS a printer
running grayscale inks (which I'm currently investigating -- the options are
mind-boggling).

most people on this list are using quadtones, and you can get
stunning results, but once you look closely at the details they all
seem to have issues. With no actual proof, I would guess that the
Cone profiles would be best, but I can't back that up and I have seen
clear proof that you can still get posterization from the Piezography
system just like the others. HP has come out with 3 printers that
have a dedicated tri-tone inkset for b&w printing which is supposed
to blow almost anything else out of the water (limited paper choices
and 8.5x14" max size, but hey, it's cheap and works out of the box).
My vote for the "ideal printer" today would be an Epson 2200 +
ImagePrint; it gives the smoothest b&w gradient I have ever seen and
gives great color as well... unfortunately, I don't have $1000 to
spend on a printer today. If I can't improve my quadtone output over
the weekend I am going to buy the HP 7660 for $149.

Except for cost, the Imageprint 2200/7600/9600/(soon)4000 is as close as you'll get to an 'ideal' single printer solution. No hassle, no fuss, just print. Plus, the b&w print tone control from that combination is really nice.

Re: [Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

Does this mean 'ideal' using Epson cartridges and semi-gloss paper (my
preference is Ilford Smooth Pearl) on an Epson 2200? How easy is Image
print to use straight out of the box...once installed? Is there a lot of
fiddling with settings or does it do most of the work?

Thanks for any insight.

Re: [Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

2004-01-22 by bwinkjet

Hi Lea,

Image Print 5.6 is easy to use after set up which can be a bit
complicated, particularly if using a firewire connection with your
printer. Once set up well it is very easy to use. There is an
extensive library of profiles for many different papers and special
gray profiles for BW printing. (Still a hint of metamerism, but
close enought for me and I am particular) There is a version 6
being released in Feb. to which you can upgrade when available. The
printing on semi-gloss papers is good, but not as good as dye
printing. Over all this is the best solution for me; using both
matt and glossy papers and color and BW printing.

Paul

Re: [Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

Lea -

There's no fiddling with IP. Install it and print. When you select the paper profile from a drop down menu, it takes care of all of the settings. The main things you have to tell IP are the paper size you are using, and if it is sheet or roll. You can download various paper profiles from the IP website at no charge. They are for use with IP only. You don't need to use any of the Photoshop print setup. Save your print-ready file and open it in IP. I've been using it for a year with my 9600, and I feel that I made a great choice for my needs.

Re: [Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

ok, it isn't quite 'ideal' since, IMO, the 2200 only really *shines*
on matte paper and not on glossy. ImagePrint is perfect right out of
the box.

Do you mean that the 2200 is better on matte than on glossy in an absolute
sense, or do you mean that when compared to a dye printer the 2200 is more
of an improvement on matte paper than it is on glossy?

Re: [Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

all the 2200 prints on glossy and lustre type papers that I have seen
do not look as good to me as matte paper prints behind glass. the
bronzing etc. is not terrible, but the pigment just seems to lay
better on a matte paper. ...lots of people are happy enough with it
on other papers, just not me...

...and compared to a dye based printer, I think that color from a
1280 is probably better on any paper, but just slightly on matte...
and it won't last the 90+ years that you'll get from the 2200.

I really like the 2200 on Premium Luster. Even with the Matte Black ink, you
can't get as dense blacks on any Enhanced Matte.

re: your comment "unless you're satisfied with Black Only printing"
implying BO is not quite as good as quadtone. There are some of use
who can print both ways but prefer the look of a BO print. It's a
personal preference.

I do believe the consensus of this group is that the ideal way to
print both b&w and color is two printers. I have a 1280 with UT inks
but I mostly print BO with just the Eboni. For color I have a 890. I
wouldn't trade that setup (totaling under $500) for anything out there.

On IP5.6 the only inkset that is supported is Ultrachrome.

Re: [Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

2004-01-23 by J Vee

I don¹t know if anyone is interested and it is essentially an Epson group ,
but since I have learned so much here that I have been able to apply, I will
outline my situation. I am using an 11 color Colorspan printer, quad blacks
included. The printer carries its own camera for linearity and profile
building. The quad blacks are fairly neutral on Photo Rag. Uses quad black
+ 7 color for CYMK prints. Using the company supplied profiles gives
terrible grayscale prints on 11 color. However, building ones own profiles
makes a completely neutral print. Additionally, with a profiled monitor,
any ³toned² image is reproduced almost exactly. A major drawback is that
these inks are only available as ³long lasting dye². The company also has
pigment inks but the gamut is severely limited. I understand that their
extended gamut dye set has a short print longevity. J Vee

The Imageprint website touts the ability of the RIP to handle Quad
Black inks (which I would assume to include MIS). My fuzzy memory
tells me that some people in this group use Imageprint and MIS with
some success. I guess it might depend on what "support" means.

RE: [Digital BW] BW Printing Conclusion

2004-02-17 by David J. Simons

I would have to second Tom's statement. That the below listed Epson
printers and Image Print make an exceptional one printer solution. I was
working with quad tone and ultra tone inks before I say my first ImagePrint
and Epson 2200 print. After that I sold all my printers and went with an
Epson 2200 and ImpagePrint. Zero maintenance and excellent prints, well
worth the expense.

Except for cost, the Imageprint 2200/7600/9600/(soon)4000 is as close as
you'll get to an 'ideal' single printer solution. No hassle, no fuss, just
print. Plus, the b&w print tone control from that combination is really
nice.
