AN200 / AN1X Arpeggiator (?)

AN200 / AN1X Arpeggiator (?)

2004-12-08 by Dan

Hi,

I'm a new member and wanted to first say, "Hello to all!" and also
to start right in with a couple questions:

Does anyone know if by using the Yamaha AN200 editor you can make
use of the arpeggiator that is onboard the PLG-150AN board and then
save the arpeggiation in the patch stored in the AN200 (since the
AN200 itself doesn't have an arpeggiator)? There is supposedly a 30
pattern arpeggiator on the PLG-150AN board but all I can find in the
AN200 editor is the step sequencer.

Also, does the "Edge" parameter (when turned up) add harmonics to
the basic waveform to make it brighter (counteracting the LP filter)?

Thanks!

Dan

The Edge parameter controls the waveform spectrum. If you have a
square wave selected and the Edge is set at 127 you have a square
wave, At zero you have a sine wave. In the middle you have something
in between. A square wave has harmonics. A sine wave does not.So the
edge parameter is a type of filter but sounds different than your
standard low pass filter.

So then the Edge parameter would gradually change a saw wave to a
ramp wave (and everything inbetween)?

the "saw", and take some of the harsh sound away. Edge fully reduced
on a saw wave also results in something very close to a sine wave.
Using shape knob on the Ion also reduces harsh saw sound, but does it
by skewing the wave.

Unfortunately, no. The Edge thing is a lot like a low pass filter. It removes
harmonics, starting at the highest. So no matter which wave you start with as
the source, if you turn down the Edge all the way you get a sine wave.

I wish they had thought of morphing the wave in some form with an easy to
understand parameter. As it is, you can use FM to create different waveforms
from the internal sources... but doing this is tricky and difficult to get
consistent results. If you learn to program the FM feature in the AN series
synths I would have to call you an expert. Some of the best sounds use the FM
feature. IIRC the "We All Die" patch has something to do with FM. Isn't that
why it's called FM? (freaking magic)

I found out last night that the "AN 200 Editor" that I was using
differs from the "Expert Editor" in one slight detail. The AN200
editor doesn't have the arpeggiation button in the upper right hand
section of the GUI in the common section where the step sequencer
button is. I tried to install Expert Standalone Editor in order to
access the arpeggiation features but although the installation
seemed to go OK, I can't get the prgram to launch (?) I tried
uninstalling AN Editor and even XG Works Lite and then reinstalling
them but now I only get some sort of error on my XP PCwhen trying to
run the AN Editor. The error message is some thing
like, "Kernal..." I guess I should have left well-enough alone!

Does anybody have insights on what is wrong? (other than user error!)

: )

Thanks,

Dan

OK, the problem of the "Procedure entry point not
found...KERNAL32.dll" error was an indication that I was trying to
run XGWorks 3.06 on an Windows XP PC - I just had to download the
3.07 update to function correctly with XP. I'll report back on
whether the standalone Expert Editor works to store arpeggios in
AN200 patches.

BTW, I checked and my AN200 already has OS v.1.03 in it.
