Sound problems with AN1x

Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-13 by Arthur Alexander Crichton

Hi,

I have a problem with my Yamaha AN1x.

When I select some pad sounds on my AN1x the sounds are bright and
after about 3 seconds the sound just cuts off to a duller sound which
is very low in volume. When I press the keys again all I get is a
faint dull sound. I try to play the keys harder but I still get this
sound. Before I had this problem, those paticular patches used to
sound bright and full. Also, I have noticed some sounds sound thinner
than what they used to and that sounds that rely on arpeggio or lfo
sound muddy and strange.

What is wrong with my beloved AN1X?

I have tried cleaning the control knobs with switch cleaner but I
still get the same problem. BTW the rom version on my AN1x is v1.02

Please help.

I would try backing up your patches, then maybe reload the OS. It worked for a problem I was having on my K-Station. Good Luck!

How do I reload the OS?

Is it the same as a factory reset? If so, I did a factory reset but
the problem still persists.

The problem is when I keep the key pressed the sound just abruptly
goes dull and low in volume which it shouldn't do. Its like the
cutoff has gone to "0" and the main volume has gone low.

Cheers

Re: [AN1x] Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-13 by Arthur Alexander Crichton

Ok, I tried a factory reset and played the affected sounds again and
it seemed to fix the problem. Then I leave my AN1x on and 5 minutes
later the problem comes back:(

What will I do? Is my AN1x ready for the synth graveyard in the sky?

Please advise

What happens if you unplug everything except Power Adapter and
headphones?

True, could be midi control messages from your sequencer/software that is sending the signals to the AN1X. I always have problems where I hit a certain key on my AN1X, and it mutes all the tracks in logic, lol.

Re: [AN1x] Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-14 by Jeff

Hello Alex!
as you describe your problem it looks like something wrong in the analog output circuit: dry solder joint, bad contact or some "ill" op amp or transistor that goes out when hot. The heat related failure is probable because it works well for a short time and after the sound decreases, a contact problem would occur more irregularly. I'm not at home currently, so i cannot open mine to tell you what to look and where. I don't think it is a fatal issue at all, but it could take a long time to find the faulty part.
You can try 2 things without opening the synth:
First remove all additional devices (effects, patch bay..) between the AN1x and the amp or mixer.
Then turn on your synth with the line out plugged only, play it,
and after do the same thing without line out but with headphones only.
If you're using a mixer try another input with the line out connected.
Look (or more likely hear !) if there is some difference....
Cheers
J.F.

Haha its been along time since someone has called me Alex:) Ok, I
have removed the left and right line outputs and left the headphones
in. So far the problem has disappeared. I will disconnect the
headphones and connect the line outputs and see if the problem
returns.

I'll report back if there is any probems.

Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-14 by Arthur Alexander Crichton

I have tested my AN1x with just the headphones connected and the
problem seems to have disappeared. I then tested with the line
outputs connected and still there is no problem. Finally I tested
with the headphones and line outputs both connected and again no
problems.

The problem seems to have disappeared.

Could it be that...

1) I pressed the "assign" button while powering on the synth that
fixed the problem

or

2) My AN1x is temperamental?

Cheers

Arthur

Re: [AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-14 by Alex Baumann

I think the suggestion to disconnect everything but power and audio may be a good one. Try this for a little while, because one possibility is that something in your midi chain is sending it controller data like volume and cutoff. Do you think that is possible?

I have tested my AN1x with just the headphones connected and the

problem seems to have disappeared. I then tested with the line

outputs connected and still there is no problem. Finally I tested

with the headphones and line outputs both connected and again no

problems.

The problem seems to have disappeared.

Could it be that...

1) I pressed the "assign" button while powering on the synth that

fixed the problem

or

2) My AN1x is temperamental?

Cheers

[AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-14 by Arthur Alexander Crichton

Hi,

I don't have midi connected on my AN1x. The only cables connected are
the power supply, headphones and line outputs.

Cheers

Arthur

Re: [AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-14 by nung242

Its starting to sound like what one of the previous comments said, a drifting IC chip or maybe a circuit that flakes out when it gets warm. I have a novation KS-4 that does the same thing, its irritating because I can use it for live shows anymore, cant trust it.

I don't have midi connected on my AN1x. The only cables connected are
the power supply, headphones and line outputs.

Re: [AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-15 by Jeff

Hi !
it's not very complex if you have the schema, or at least the general layout of your synth. Touch each IC in the right part of the electronics (here the analog output circuit)with your fingertip, the hotter one might be nearly dead. But some ICs like the voltage regulators are normally hot. Of course avoid it when the mains voltage is present, but on most synths there is an external DC supply, and the voltages are low (9 or 12 V, 5V for the logic ICs, even less for the DSPs or µPs).
And NEVER put your fingers in a power amp, mostly with tubes!!
A more sophisticated way to detect a heat related failure uses a "cold spray" (available in electronic parts shops): cool down each suspect chip when the sound goes wrong; if the problem disappears you've found the failed device. Now the main problem is to find a new one, in modern instruments you have a lot of specific ICs only available by Yamaha (or other brand), if they agree to sell you one....
Cheers
J.F.

[AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2008-02-15 by Arthur Alexander Crichton

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies but as stated on my last post I think I
fixed the problem as I have used my AN1x for 2 days now without any
of the sounds going all weird on me. I don't know what I did to fix
it but it seemed to fix when I pressed the "assign" button while
powering on the AN1x.

If my synth starts behaving badly again then I will try the all the
instruction that members have told me to do to try and fix it.

Cheers

Arthur

hotter one might be nearly dead. But some ICs like the voltage
regulators are normally hot. Of course avoid it when the mains
voltage is present, but on most synths there is an external DC
supply, and the voltages are low (9 or 12 V, 5V for the logic ICs,
even less for the DSPs or µPs).

a "cold spray" (available in electronic parts shops): cool down each
suspect chip when the sound goes wrong; if the problem disappears
you've found the failed device. Now the main problem is to find a new
one, in modern instruments you have a lot of specific ICs only
available by Yamaha (or other brand), if they agree to sell you
one....

Arthur,

Holding the Assign button while powering on the AN1x is used to switch between Mode 1
and Mode 2 - which is Yamahaspeak for alternating between Control Change Modes (see
page 9 of the AN1x Data List for the specifics.) This is very useful to to extend the range of
parameters (CC #'s) the AN1x will respond to and transmit, but I find it difficult to accept
this alone would clear the issue you've experienced.

Don't get me wrong - I'm glad your AN1x is behaving as expected, but I think it more
likely this indicates the problem is intermittent. And you did mention that the problem had
cleared at least once, temporarily, following a factory reset, correct?

Good idea - the only thing I would add is to consider a battery replacement too.

Regards,

Jon

I realize this thread/topic is over a year old, but I recently got an AN1x again (had one a few years ago) and was experiencing this exact problem as stated in the original topic. Some patches sound normal for awhile and then suddenly sound thinner. After messing around with it for a bit trying to isolate the cause I'm 99% convinced this is a ribbon controller issue (specifically the Z axis). Applying pressure or tapping the ribbon cures the problem, but it can reoccur again after powering down and powering on.

I plan on opening up the synth to check for a loose ribbon connector and to clean some contacts. Just wanted to add a reply in case anyone else searches this topic (like I just did) and is looking for possible answers.

BTW, the AN1x I just picked up is a mint condition unit. First owner used it once or twice and then kept it in a closet for the past 10 years. Everything was in perfect like new condition...synth, power supply, manuals, box. Software OS version is v1.03.

Cheers,
-Todd

Gosh, we had threads on this awhile ago... the Ribbon Controller always seemed a bit unpredictable.

I think the most common issue was was being able to tap the ribbon would cause it to 'hold' at that value rather than jump back to the default value and for others it would not work as advertised. It was an intermittent thing, and while some of us could reproduce the issue it was never under the same circumstances as another user, i.e. using different voices. And it seem to clear after a power on/off cycle.

Sound likes you've rediscovered this issue.

is your psu large enough as its getting hotter it sounds like the voltage is dropping i had this problem with a faulty psu it would start after 5 minutes and the sounds would start to get distorted

psu are the biggest problem with any electronic equipment and wallwarts are the worst as everything is compacted into a plug size package

get another psu and try that first before suspecting the synth

Yep, it's definitely that. Disabling the ribbon x and z in the control utility (setting both to '0') makes the problem go away. Weird that the ribbon would cause issues when it isn't even being touched, but at least now I know the culprit.

It looks more likely like a ribbon controller problem : play, hit it
gently with your fingertip and listen...maybe you'll have to open your
synth , clean and plug firmly the ribbon controller connector to fix it.
The connectors and IC sockets are often the hidden "Achille's heel" of
electronic devices.
For the supply unit : these wallwarts are often crap pieces of
electronics, but mine works perfectly (at the moment, maybe
tomorrow.??). The Yamaha unit is a bit expensive for what it is, but you
can try any similar supply rated at 12V - 700 mA, "+" at the center of
the connector. Don't try higher voltages, but a 1 amp supply will work
even better.
Cheers.

[AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2010-10-14 by arthtrin

Its been a couple of years since I started this post. I think I know what the culprit of this problem with the sounds on my AN1x were. The culprit was the power supply. Just a few days ago I resurrected my AN1x from the attic but lost the power supply. I then found a power supply which was 12v 600mA from a hard drive I have and it worked like a charm on my AN1x with no problems with sounds going weird or fading etc. The only problem was that I had to change the internal battery. However I was a bit worried using the power supply as it is 600mA instead of the required 700mA so I went to my local Maplin store and bought a power supply with volts selector. I then adjusted the volts selector to 12V (which according to the box has 1.4amp) and connected it to my AN1x. After a while of it being connected I started having the problems with the sounds going all weird again. I then disconnected the power supply and reconnected my other power supply and it was back working normal again.

I am convinced that the power supply I used originally on my AN1x and the new one I bought from Maplin was and is the problem.

Thanks for the info.

I'm guessing the one you bought from Maplin, doesn't really perform as

Re: [AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2010-10-15 by Bob S.

The switchable voltage supplies don't always provide the full rated current at the highest voltage output, it depends on how they are spec'd...

If you can measure the supply voltage while operating under load, you may see a reduced or modulated voltage on the power supply when there is more current needed by the device (AN1x) than can be provided by the supply.

Or perhaps the signal isn't as 'clean' as the one coming out from the
other power supply.

Right !
Poor (or failed) voltage regulation or filtering can be the cause of
these issues. If i remember a voltage regulation is implemented inside
the AN1x, at least for the 5V for digital ICs.
Cheers.

[AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2010-10-16 by arthtrin

It is strange how Yamaha say that 700mA or over is recommended for the power supply yet when I use an old power supply that is 600mA it works better than a power supply that is 1amp or 1.4amp. Of course if I continue to use this power supply at 600mA it may burn it even though my AN1x works perfect with it. Strange but true.

I have tried using two 12v power supplies one that is 1.4amp and another that is 1amp and get nothing but problems with presets on the synth acting strange. Yet when I use a 12v power supply that is only 600mA (which is not recommended) my An1x works perfect and the sounds work like they should.

Fortunately, my local music store can order the correct power supply for my AN1x.

[AN1x] Re: Sound problems with AN1x

2010-10-17 by ubergvx

I have the same ribbon controller problem described below (I just saved a couple of snippets of the longer thread). The standard advice to check & clean the connector doesn't help; the problem is the ribbon itself. There's a tiny crease in mine; maybe the previous owner pushed too hard with a fingernail. I took the ribbon out and peeled a couple of the layers apart and wiped the surfaces. Put it back together and it worked OK for several months, but now the problem is back.

I'm going to pull the ribbon & mess with it again, this week or next. I'll post an update if I manage to fix it (or not). Or if I manage to get another ribbon from Yamaha (if anyone's already tried this, please let me know).
