Yamaha CS-60 modification

2005-12-01 by pureoldsound

Does anyone knows about a mod for the CS60 which lets you layer 4
voices on top of the other 4?

Thanks

There's been talk about this kind of stuff before. Look at the thread
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamahacs80/message/350. I know
don't the details, but I know you can change a pin on the keyboard
scanner chip to go from 8 to 4 voice (needed since the same chip is
used in the 8-voice CS-80/60 and the 4-voice CS-50). How you would
get voices 5-8 to pick up the voice 1-4 gate/CV could get ugly.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't see the pics as it is an old auction,
but I know someone that referred me to this mod. I just don't know
much about it. My question would be if this mod is possible can I
still keep all the 8 voices intact without any compromised when the
layer switch is off?

Re: [yamahacs80] Yamaha CS-60 modification

In my CS60, such a mod was done.
The Gate signals were simply connected together in pairs (with a switch),
apparently
forming some weird wired-OR.
In a 3rd switch position, the Gates were connected in two quadruples,
obviously
aiming at a two-voice, 4-note stack.
First thing I did was getting rid of this modification.
It _sort_of_ worked, but not really perfectly. Probably becaus eof the
comlex
voice allocation in the CS-Synths.
The right way to do it, IMO, would be like this:
In 4-Voice mode, use the output pin for the 5th Gate as an input pin with
the right logic level
(look up CS-50 and CS-60 schemos for details), and connect Voice board 5's
CV to
Voice board 1's CV, 6 to 2, and so on.
Disclaimer: I have *NOT* done this myself, I do not really recommend it
(otherwise
I would have done it on my CS-60), and apart from this mail, I won't be of
much help
if you want to do this in yout precious instrument.

JH.

The problem is that this will deal with the CV/Gate to the M cards, but
there's other places that use the note data from the KAS that won't be
updated correctly. For example, the KBC boards use the note/octave
codes to generate the Brilliance & Level High/Low. This really has to
be done in the KAS chip, so it would have to be replaced by a PIC or
FPGA. Of course, if you're going to do this, you'd also implement MIDI
in/out, different voice assignment mode (low-note priority, etc), and
lots of other stuff. I've thought about doing this, but then I got
better :^)

Right. That keyboard scaling of the filter was quite strange for some notes.

The only modification a CS-synth _really_ needs, is an _output_ for Gate
and CV signals, so you can play other synths form that wonderful keyboard.

Well it sounds like a complicated process. I might want to keep the
CS stock then.....

I thought the Cs-60 had CV and gate outputs? Can a Kentom Pro work
with this unit? Also, where can I find the original legs for the CS-
60?

Thanks

I thought the CS had CV and gate outputs? Can a Kenton CV gate midi converter work? Where can I find the original legs for the CS?

Thanks,

Nope, although it would be fairly easy to add: just tap the K and TR
inputs to the M cards (probably want to buffer them). You can get all 8
CVs on the SH card and the 8 Gates on the KAS board. As usual, I take
no responsibility if you blow up your synth!
> Can a Kentom Pro work with this unit?
Well, the voltage levels could be an issue. The Yamaha has a gate that
goes between +15v and -15v. A diode may be all that's needed. However,
the CV is linear (Hz/v). Can the Kenton handle this?

Sitting under a CS-60 :^) Seriously, that's about the only place.
After a year, I just got original legs for my CS-80, but they've had
some corrosion over the years, so I need to re-finish them this weekend.

So it needs to be retrofited in order to have midi? The retro kit
cost almost as much as the CS-60....I guess I'll have to give it some
thought about the midi....

When Yamaha made the CS-60 did they make a sequencer for it? or is
there a compatible sequencer to go with the CS-60?

Is this what yours looked like: http://www.matrixsynth.com/CS60mod.gif. This is on mine. I actually really, really like it and leave it on most of the time. The sound is much fuller layered but obviously you get cut down to 4 voices. Mine came this way, so I couldn't help implementing the mod myself.

Matrix can you post some pics...Somehow that web address re-directs to the martix home page instead of the CS-60 mod...

Re: [yamahacs80] Yamaha CS-60 modification

2005-12-04 by matrix

I think I just figured it out!

The obvious:
1. The 8/4 switch goes between 8 and 4 voices where 8 is one OSC per voice and 4 is two per voice, as you'd expect.
2. The tune knob seems to detune the voices to make the sound richer, but it's obviously easy to make it sound too out of tune

What was not so obvious:
3. The Aux 1, 2, and 3 switches when alow you to disable up 1, 2, or 3 voices from being triggered from the keyboard. There's a CV IN and Trigg mod on the back. If you feed an Arpeggiation through the CV IN, each of the three voices that are switched will sound. The Tune knobs adjust the pitch of each. So you can have an arpegiation going, adjust the picts for each and play along with it. Very nice.

Cheers,

Looks like I spoke too soon. Turning the AUX voices on and sending an arpeggiation IN does not cycle through the voices, but rather plays up to three voices at a time. So you can have an arpeggiation driving three OSCs at the same time. If you switch 8 to 4 to try and double that, it seem like a note hangs rather than having a 6 OCS arp going. Also, the Tune knob to the right of 2 only affects 2 and the knob to the right of 3 only affects 3. There is no Tune knob for AUX 1.

Very nice.

Cheers,

Is this what yours looked like: http://www.matrixsynth.com/CS60mod.gif. This is on mine. I actually really, really like it and leave it on most of the time. The sound is much fuller layered but obviously you get cut down to 4 voices. Mine came this way, so I couldn't help implementing the mod myself.

JH.

Hey Matrix:

You should post some clips for the mod CS-60....

BTW does anyone knows where I can find schematics for a CS-60? Also
are there schematics for adding CV/gate outputs?

Thanks....
