Re: [yamahacs80] Yamaha CS-60 modification

2005-12-04 by matrix

I think I just figured it out!

The obvious:
1. The 8/4 switch goes between 8 and 4 voices where 8 is one OSC per voice and 4 is two per voice, as you'd expect.
2. The tune knob seems to detune the voices to make the sound richer, but it's obviously easy to make it sound too out of tune

What was not so obvious:
3. The Aux 1, 2, and 3 switches when alow you to disable up 1, 2, or 3 voices from being triggered from the keyboard. There's a CV IN and Trigg mod on the back. If you feed an Arpeggiation through the CV IN, each of the three voices that are switched will sound. The Tune knobs adjust the pitch of each. So you can have an arpegiation going, adjust the picts for each and play along with it. Very nice.

Cheers,

Is this what yours looked like: http://www.matrixsynth.com/CS60mod.gif. This is on mine. I actually really, really like it and leave it on most of the time. The sound is much fuller layered but obviously you get cut down to 4 voices. Mine came this way, so I couldn't help implementing the mod myself.

In my CS60, such a mod was done.
The Gate signals were simply connected together in pairs (with a switch),
      apparently
      forming some weird wired-OR.
In a 3rd switch position, the Gates were connected in two quadruples,
      obviously
      aiming at a two-voice, 4-note stack.
First thing I did was getting rid of this modification.
It _sort_of_ worked, but not really perfectly. Probably becaus eof the
      comlex
      voice allocation in the CS-Synths.
The right way to do it, IMO, would be like this:
In 4-Voice mode, use the output pin for the 5th Gate as an input pin with
      the right logic level
(look up CS-50 and CS-60 schemos for details), and connect Voice board 5's
      CV to
Voice board 1's CV, 6 to 2, and so on.
Disclaimer: I have *NOT* done this myself, I do not really recommend it
      (otherwise
I would have done it on my CS-60), and apart from this mail, I won't be of
      much help
if you want to do this in yout precious instrument.

      JH.
