Troubles loading Multi's from SX?

Troubles loading Multi's from SX?

2003-06-30 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Anyone ever had any issues with loading multi's from an external
sequencer? I had all of my Multi's backed up in SX, however after
initialising the XL-7 over the weekend, I'm unable to get them to load
back into the XL-7. Everything transferred back just fine, Presets,
Patterns, etc. But my Multi's won't transfer no matter what I do. I have
a track in SX with all of the multi's stored on that, and while I can see
the MIDI out light in SX is showing me that the data is going out of SX,
it's not being recognized by the XL-7.

Just me?

I don't know, maybe the device ID needs to be the same and the XL-7 device id
got reset?

Yeah, it's strange for sure. Played around with this one some more last
night and couldn't get it working still. I can back up and reload my
Presets and User Arps with no problems using the exact same method, but
Multi's won't reload. Anyone at Emu had any experience with this?

BTW, there's no need to restore the Presets, they're always there. You
can't erase or overwrite the XL-7 ROM Presets, only the User Presets which
are exact copies of the XL-7 ROM. You could also the Bank Copy command in
the Save Menu for this.

Sorry to hear you are still having the problem. I assume Andre's
suggestion to check sysex device ID didn't help. I'm reconfiguring
my midi computer, so I can't work on the problem just now. Perhaps
this afternoon or tonight. Can you either upload or e-mail me a
sample multi.mid file?

I haven't saved multisetups via midi, yet. But I see that you can
only send the current setup. Is it possible that the multisetups
only go into a current buffer and not a RAM location? If so, perhaps
they need to be loaded one at a time and then saved.

Also, take a look at the sysex header. What type of dump is it? (55h
12h? 55h 1Ch? other?)

Hope this helps.

My simple test: (1) transmit multi.syx to Cakewalk (2) restore to
factory multi (3) transmit multi.syx from Cakewalk. Note: I am not
using sending a mid file; I am doing it from the sysex bank directly.

Results: SOME current setup parameters changes (Xmit midi clock,
tempo). SOME parameters don't change (view angle). Without
checking, I would assume 90-99% of the parameters do go into the
current multi buffer (based on my reading of the sysex manual).

>>>Thanks for testing this. Kinda odd that all of the Multi parameters
aren't saved though. Especially the Multi name... <<<

Solution: Send and save each multisetup separately.

Hope this helps.

Additional thought: From a studio/performance standpoint, the way E-
Mu did this (multis going to buffer) makes sense in that you would
seem to be able to change multis on the fly from an external device.

Also, the sysex manual has several dump formats related to multisetup
dumps. (This is more than you probably need to know).
(1) Multimode map dump: ". . . a minimal set of parameters used to
configure multimode operation."
(2) Setup Dump containing master settings (except program/preset map
and tuning tables).

I suspect the send current multisetup function dump is either a
VARIATION of or the same as (2). The sysex manual confirms that only
the current setup can be dumped.

There are sysex commands to copy the Master Setup (2) to and from the
Setup Edit Buffer. So, it MIGHT be possible to automate the process
of saving Master Setups in a midi file, or with a program that
receives and sends sysex data/commands.

I am trying to get back into midi programming with a mind towards
writing some nifty utilities for the current Proteus line. Perhaps
my first test will be a program to get, save, load, and put banks of
multisetup. (I've done assembly langauge midi bulk data dump
programming for the Commodore 64 and for MS-DOS.

I don't know if I want to tackle a Windows User inteface. So I'll
either do it an MS-DOS utility or try to find someone who does
Windows. (Sorry, no Mac.)

Very cool man, glad we have someone here who knows this stuff. It gets a
bit deep for me at one point and then I can't be bothered ;) The Multi
utility sounds very cool, as would a way to do the same with Presets. DOS
or not, let me know if I can help at all, very interested in this!

I just checked. Xmit curent multi does send Name to your storage
device. The E-Mu also RECEIVES the name and location!!!!

If multis are saved indivudually, I think they can be sent to the E-
Mu and then saved in the right locations using the RESTORE SETUP and
SAVE SETUP menus. You can also save them to different locations.

1. Select RESTORE MULTISETUP menu.
2. Send multi.syx to E-Mu. Jot down multi number.
3. Select SAVE SETUP TO menu.
4. Change multi number to desired location.
5. Press Enter to save.

If you still have the MID file, all is not lost. What software did
you use to save the multis? Does it allow you to send syx banks
separately? Even if not, it might be very possible to extract the
multis (and create a MID file that will put those tricky multis in
their place).

No, multi.syx can be received from other menus. I just suggested being at
the Restore menu so you can see the number that the multi was assigned to
when you saved it (so you can save it to the same location). BTW, if you
send multi.syx while other stuff is going on (pattern play/audtion/etc.)
you may get undesirable results. :-(

>>>Right, I wouldn't be plaing the XL-7 while trying to send it sysex :)

I'm not sure what SX is, but if you can do it that way great.

>>>Steinberg's Cubase SX. Beginning to think this might be a SX issue and
not a XL-7 one after playing with it some more last night. I can see the
Multi data and even the names of the Multi's in SX's sysex editor, but it
still won't send it to my midi out port, even if I split them up
individually. Anyone know of a free app that will send midi files? I
heard that Media Player does this, but I couldn't find the option to
select a MIDI port anywhere in that program???? <<<

If you get to the point where you'd rather be making music ;-0 I'd be
willing to try extracting the multis with debug (or perhaps with an old
version of Cakewalk).

Hmmmm. Maybe I should be asking people on the board what features they
might want in a standalone computer utlity. I'll put complete
backup/restore (except for viewing angle) on the wish list.

>>>

XX-7's in one go, regardless of how long it takes.
- Bulk dump all Presets.

other features using the USB port.)

The Device ID for the XL7, under the Midi menu. I suspect that the multi's you sent had the device ID in them and your's wasn't set to the factory default of 00 or 16 when you recorded them. Then afterwards you did a system restore and your device ID changed. Now your XL7 will ignore all the restore info from the old device ID. Solution: try all the device ID's until one works ... ;)

Course I haven't finished reading all the emails yet so I don't know whether you got this fixed. Also to look at the sysex you can use E Loader, it's one of the tools loaded with it.

Hope this helps,

Andre

Ive used Windows media player to upgrade the virus os, and It seems to work fine. to set up the midi routing correctly you have to go into the control panel and look in the sounds and audio devices. Under the audio tab there is a window to select the default midi playback device. Like I said it worked fine with my MOTU MIDI Express XT when sonar would not, Id give it a try!

I can confirmation this approach [for sending sysex data] using:
--Windows Media Player 6.01 [older than current version]
--Win98SE

(1) Go into: Settings | Control Panel | Multimedia | MIDI output
(2) Set to PC's external midi out port.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
