hard one

Hey all, I got a question for ya. Get the forum moving ya know...

I recently was skimming through my XL-7 manual and I found a very
usefull little nugget of info concerning the FX setup. Apparently
cc:79 is hard-coded on all presets to be the FX channel selector.
This will be huge when i get it working well, because I should be
able to route each individual track to whatever send output I want
(internal FX, mixer, FX box, etc).

The FX settings respond to CC values: 0=Use Preset, 1=Send1, 2=Send2,
3=Send3 and 4=Send4. I set a Program Knob to basic seq/cc:79 to see
what would happen.  Lo and behold it worked great.  Only one problem;
I can only turn the knob about a nanometer and it will go from Use
Preset to Send4. The value range is way too tight.

I want to have the programmable knob span only CC values 0-4 instead
of 0-127. Is this possible? I would really like to keep the knob on
basig seq to perserve the way I have other stuff set up.

Thanks in advance.

Hehe. I would like feedback on this issue as well as I have my
multisetup the same way. I, like yourself found it unusable because
of the knob range like you describe. Basically I could only either
use Preset(all the way left) or Send 4(all the way right). What would
be great is if you could say, assign an individual program knob to a
send. So Program Knob A would control Send 1, Program Knob B would
control Send 2 etc. That's why I've always liked Rolands groove boxes
because of their effects tweakability on the surface. What is techno
without being able to freak the effects live? Oh well, I still
couldnt part with the 7 at this point. Back to the lab.

I can't think of a way to do this. The programmable knobs swing full
range no matter what. However, you can put cc#79 messages in your
sequence (probably easiest with list edit) to change FX send selection
on the fly. You can also do the same for arp with cc#80. In case
you're wondering, this is also how the sequencer stores these settings
for each track...

This you *can* do. You have to be in "use preset on channel xx" mode
however. Some people set up an "FX preset" on an unused channel and
point a track to it (with some data so it'll save the preset
selection). The XL-7 will then use all of that preset's FX settings
*and* FX cord routing. Set programmable knobs to be MIDI I-P on that
channel, and hook up MIDI I -> FxASend1, MIDI J -> FxASend2, MIDI K ->
FxASend3, MIDI L -> FxASend4, MIDI M -> FxBSend1, MIDI N -> FxBSend2,
MIDI O -> FxBSend3, MIDI P -> FxBSend4.  Not only will you get initial
settings saved in the preset, but you'll also have realtime control
over all 8 Send levels. You can copy this preset around so you don't
have to set up all those cords again...

Ummmmm, Have you looked in the 'preset' patchords?

I'm jumping in a little late I'll admit, but the last message says something about not being able to control FX sends in real-time. This should be the case. A few screens after the regular 'layer' patchords there are 'preset' patchords that have a different set of destination, including FX send levels.
It works quite nicely, and unlike some Roland gear, you can actually specify how much you want which knob to affect the destination.

HOpe this helps,

but when you leave your preset to go tweak another one, the fx send
changes you made are cancelled, contrary to lfo or filter freq
changes.
could have been good if it was not cancelled.
