Hmm so a good sound source compliment to the XL7?

Hmm so a good sound source compliment to the XL7?

2003-03-17 by Erika

So i've bought the XL7, and am not happy with the sound set. I am
with the sequencer and effects. This box is loaded and peforms well
as nerve center of a studio. But I'm shooting to more of a ambient
dark soundscape trancey feel. I love pads, lots of them. I am
considering getting a Triton LE, I have played those in a store and
like them. But then again, i'm just paying for another sequencer and
so forth. I'm wondering if perhaps there is something in the middle
i'm missing? A module or synth sans a sequencer that will give what I
seek?

What about the Orbit ROMs? any good for that?

Hmm.. Thanks in advance

How about just making the sounds you're after? The XL-7 has more than
enough base waveforms that will suit what you're trying to do, you just
need to dive in and start programming...

Awww, now im scared. i dont know the first thing about it. So what do
you do? just add waveforms and filters until your happy with the
outcome?

Sounds like you should get a basic book on programming synths.
All of the editing functions will make a lot more sense if you have
some theory behind why they are there. Otherwise its going to be a
lot of trial an error (which is sometimes good but...)

RE: [xl7] Re: Hmm so a good sound source compliment to the XL7?

2003-03-18 by Andre Lewis

Basically the easiest thing to do to make a pad sound is to change the "Amp
Envelope"

(Check out this article, it should help you understand what that means)
http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/1994_articles/mar94/analoguesynthesis.html

You can do this easily from the Quick Edit section (Second row of knobs) labeled
Amp.
A Pad is basically a sound that starts softly and grows louder (Attack knob),
usually stays on while you keep holding the note, then gradually fades away
either while you are holding it down or after you release the note. The
different phases of this relate to ADSR or Atack Decay Sustain Release. Playing
with the attack and the release will change the sound the most drastically.

Another thing to play with is the filters after you have made the volume doing
what you want. The idea with filters and pads is to get the pad out of the way
of the rest of your music; in other words to fill in the gaps in you sonic
spectrum, so you would want to filter out the part of the sound that gets in the
way.

Don't forget to save the sound when you're done though, and make sure you save
the part in addition to the song or pattern... ;)

i think you need to delve a little deeper into the preset menu... i got
some amazing pads constructed outta my box... basically, you can build
whatever you want from scratch...and with the multiple layers, it's
hella easy to create complex evolving pads and drones...

The ideal machine for great pads would be a Hartmann Neuron
(http://www.hartmann-music.com) together with a sample CD containing
pads, which the Neuron could create models of... but I assume you
don't have that kind of money ($5000), hmmmmz... the best option
could simply be a 128mb sampler and sample CD's containing pads. I
think you should be able to find a cheap sampler nowdays...

Hehehe, no need to be scared! Yeah, just start diving into the Preset
Edit menu and play aorund there for a bit until you get start to get a
feel for what everything does. You can also go here:

http://www.studiocovers.com/articles17.htm

and read a whole bunch of articles on the basics of subtractive synthesis.
That will help you to know what all the Preset parameters do. Making
your own sounds isn't really that hard, and I guarantee you won't find
youself dishing out money for new ROMs so quickly once you get the hang of
it. Let us know if you have any questions, glad to help!

If you're after pads, the sound source is secondary; the effects
processing is much more important.

I'm currently using three pieces of gear in my projects; the XL-7, the
Nord MicroModular (two off), and the Korg OasysPCI (two off). The
OasysPCI is a physical/analogue modelling synth which will also do
sample playback (fixed plus user samples), superb digital multieffects
and onboard mixing, all DSP-smoothed, so it's my pad machine, even
though the polyphony is generally quite low except for the mundane
sample-playback side of things. As a sound source, the XL-7 gets the
least use, in fact, partly because the ROM sample selection dominates
the synthesis process, and partly because of timing issues and some
bugs.

Orbit roms rule .
Emu rules the roms !
lots of basses in da roms in all the modules - just get a bigger bottom - i mean an expander/gate (built in on some of their samplers ) or a compressor for pumpin bassy sounds or just layer them presets . Use a super Sawtooth preset cos they got more overtones .

Take a look on the web for the basics of synth programing there are
some good sites out there. I would give you links but it has been a
long time since I was looking for them.

You may also want to post your questions at IBGEEK it is another
yahoo group that i started about a year ago dealing with using the
synths in emu gear. You can find a link there under the links
section of this group.

Take care and good luck
