what chords?

what chords?

2003-02-26 by stackdigital

I'm still trying to wrap my head around sound design on the XL-7.
Unless I've missed something, it seems that some of the wavetables (a
surprisingly high percentage, actually) are samples of chords, not just
single notes. Is there a reference anywhere that tells which chords
they are?

If I have missed something and they are programmed into the presets I'm
still curious which chords they are. Some of the names give a little
hint but I'm wondering if anyone can make it a little easier on us
curious folks.

Thanks,

Chris

I don't believe there is any documentation like that, sorry. If you want
to see if it's part of the preset, you first stop would be to look at the
Transpose page in Preset Edit for all layers. If you see all of the
layers are transposed by something other than 0, the chord is probably
part of the Preset, and not the actual waveform.

Re: [xl7] what chords?

2003-02-27 by Nick Rothwell

The XL-7 is basically aimed at the techno market, and the genre has a
bit of a thing about chord stabs, so a fair number of the actual
samples are rich in modal harmonics. They're not documented, but
it's usually pretty easy to determine the most obvious intervals, at
least enough to harmonise around them.

As Erik says, the presets themselves might transpose (or detune)
individual layers to form chords. The layer mute page is your friend;
jump to that and listen selectively to the layers.

I have another question. After reading about all the patch cords in the manual online I got really excited. But after I bought my XL7 home, I opened the box and there was only a power cable and no PATCH CORDS!! I have been calling the store and they tell me that patchcords are costing like $20 each! Well with all the patchcords listed in the manual, after I need to buy all the patchcords separately this synth is not such a bargain anymore! Does anyone else have this problem?

There's should be 24 patches cords in the box, you seriously didn't ge
those? Wow, bummer, you should have gotten the RS7000 instead. I'm sure
it would come with everything...

You were shortchanged as well, Erik - I got 96 cords with mine. But
I'm sure there will be a new set of cords bundled with the OS 2.0
release in any case.

I didn't get a power chord with my unit, but found one somebody had
left underneath one of the electric guitar presets.

I forgot to mention my XL-7 is one of the new Black and Decker cordless

under the firewood Presets?

using the preset auditiosn in a pattern

You could connect a midi cord from the MIDI out to the MIDI in and record
it that way.

So are you saying that I can do it within the MP7 internal sequencer or
are are you referring to an external sequencer. I have it attached to a
TS10 Ensoniq keyboard with cables running both ways Midi out to Midi in
ans vice versa.

Thanks for the quick reply I appreciate it.

No, you could connect a midi cable from the MP-7's MIDI out A, to the
MP-7's MIDI in. The just hit record on the MP-7's sequencer and play your
Preset with the riff you want. If the timings a bit off, you could use
quantize to clean it up.

RE: [xl7] using the preset auditiosn in a pattern

2003-02-27 by Reverend Douglas Lee

I would like to record the preset audtion riff loop into a pattern so
that I could build from there and then put the different patterns into
song mode. I hope it makes sense what I'm trying to do and more than
that, that it actually can be done.

Thanks again.

I've been watching and reading for a couple of days now but thought my
questions might be a little too much but someone told me the question
not asked is the worst.

Re: [xl7] what chords?

There's 24 patch cords that came in the box (US version only perhaps?).
They help you write hit songs with the XL-7, sort of like the supercharger
options on the XL-1. Think of them as an easy way to write music, without
having to do anything hard. Pretty cool, glad I waited....

Keep in mind guys, if you got the cords already, OS 2.0 won't work, you'll
have to wait until version 4.2, due out about a month from now for us cord
types...

Just FYI

I have never noticed a patchcord I was assuming they were made in the
device like a digital patchbay - I'm probably way off, because I never
tried to use it becuase I couldn't understand what it was for. But you do
get extra cables with the unit - how interesting, what do they plug into?

There's 24 patch cords that came in the box (US version only perhaps?).
They help you write hit songs with the XL-7, sort of like the supercharger
options on the XL-1. Think of them as an easy way to write music, without
having to do anything hard. Pretty cool, glad I waited....

Keep in mind guys, if you got the cords already, OS 2.0 won't work, you'll
have to wait until version 4.2, due out about a month from now for us cord
types...

Just FYI

What patch Cords are you referring to and what do they do?

They plug into the flux capicitor, it's in box two that came with your
XL-7.

I have never noticed a patchcord I was assuming they were made in the
device like a digital patchbay - I'm probably way off, because I never
tried to use it becuase I couldn't understand what it was for. But you do
get extra cables with the unit - how interesting, what do they plug into?

My MP-7 came with platinum tip TRS patch cables with gold wire inside. Also
came with a usb powered patchbay that connects to the host port on back.

You were shortchanged as well, Erik - I got 96 cords with mine. But
I'm sure there will be a new set of cords bundled with the OS 2.0
release in any case.

I didn't get a power chord with my unit, but found one somebody had
left underneath one of the electric guitar presets.

I thought that the command station was supposed to come with some
drum kits but there is only these buttons and a power cord in the
box. What a rip off!

The UK model comes with patch cords as well, but they're specially
engineered to run at 50Hz, not 60. Use the wrong cords and your music
will be quite a way out of tune.

Re: what chords?

2003-02-28 by S V G

Here I thought you guys were pulling our legs with the patchcord thing. I too thought that
the XX-7 as all other Proteus engines had a digital patchbay. Imagine my surprise when I bought a
brand new Vintage Keys module yesterday (you know, the one with the "retro" knobs, brushed
aluminum on plastic). I took it out of the box and the first thing that hit me was a strong smell
of stale tobacco. Okay I said to myself, I guess that's a nice touch... then I found at the
bottom of the box... you guessed it, 24 real patchcords. The back panel had (in addition to the 6
output jacks) 24 extra 1/4" phone jacks! I was amazed how they got them all to fit in that space.
Aaron and friends must have spent the last several months pulling all-nighters to get these
things together. So the real kicker is when I start plugging some of these patchcords in...
almost all of them had significant crackle in the lines. I had to fiddle with each one for a
while before the crackling would go away. Wow, I mean that's *really* attention to detail! How
these guys pulled that one off is sure to go down in the anals of sonic history!!!

             Stephen
