Sends, effects, programmable knobs and other questions.

2003-02-18 by drewaight1 <drewaight@hotmail.com>

I have had my MP-7 for a couple of months now and frankly I love it.
I am familiar with other emu proteus models and of course Im a big
fan of the wavetables that E-mu makes. But now Ive been using it for
sometime I have some questions about the sequencing aspect of the
command station. I'm suspecting rEalm will be able to help me out the
most here.

1. Whats the deal with the effects, yeah they are a bit weak, but how
does this whole "send" thing work. Am I right in thinking that the
output send is a function of the PRESET??? Can this be so ridiculous?
If I want a preset Becky Boise with a send3 output I have to save the
kit as a special user preset even though the only difference is the
send output. Surely the channel sends should be a function of the
Pattern and not the preset.

2. Is it just me or do the Mod1 Mod2 Wild1 Wild2 knobs do nothing.
(except Mod2 always shifts the pitch, who does that with a knob
anyway?)Where can I change the parameters of these knobs? They are
programmable right? I understand how the Wild works with the beats
mode but can we assign them to have a funciton on the non-beats
presets also?

3. How can I change the length of a note that i have inputted using
grid recording? With my roland MC307 the Step(EMU grid) and Event(EMU
step) Work hand in hand for total control over events. Does anyone
understand the XX-7 step recording here?

4. When using the Step recorder and viewing in 16th notes, How can I
get 1.3 2.3 3.3 etc in the LCD display without having to play/pause?
Pressing edit while the bar/beat is illuminated and then turning the
control wheel only changes the whole bar. Wouldn't that be fancy if
we could also scroll to half measures?

Those are my questions for now. Even though I think Em-U quite
possibly had their headz up their arses when designing the sequencer
portion (And are still bastards for not giving the sounddiver people
the Sysex information) I really am a giant fan of this machine. Too
bad my only choices were a hip hop soundset or a trance soundset.
guess Ill have to get an expansion.

                                       Thanks in advance

                                               neverwin

The send busses each have an amount fed into the EFX processors. This
amount is global for the entire XX-7 synthesizer. It can either be set from
a global setting (in Global) or controlled by one of the 32 channels of your
choice. if you elect the last option is is pretty easy to use a dummy patch
on that channels as an effects patch giving you the benefit of being able to
control the eight total send levels (one per each of two effects, times four
busses) in real-time using QuickEdit knobs. With some clever use of the
limited busses you can get some useful real-time control over the effects.

BTW I'm not debate the sanity of the E-mu scheme.

>>>Depends on how you have your box configured. If the effects are set to
Multimode Control, then they get saved with the pattern. If you set them
up as "Preset on Channel X", then they get saved with the Preset. Check
the FAQ I wrote in the files section of this group, whole chapter on just
this topic. <<<

2. Is it just me or do the Mod1 Mod2 Wild1 Wild2 knobs do nothing.

right? I understand how the Wild works with the beats mode but can we

>>>Yes, you can change these in the Preset Edit mode, you want the
Patchcords section (the letters A, B, C, etc correspond to the knobs). <<<

How can I change the length of a note that i have inputted using grid
recording?

>>>YOu can't yet while IN grdi mode, wait til OS 2.0, there's a great new
addition that deals with this (fun stuff!). In the meantime, you could
use Scale/Shift Duration in the Pattern Edit menu to extend your notes.

Does anyone understand the XX-7 step recording here?

>>>Everyone but you. :) J/k! <<<

>>>Pressing Play while in Step Mode will advance you one step equal to the
current input quantize. so you could set the input quantize to 1/2, then
press play to advance one half measure. <<<
