Touchstrip

This might sound a little crazy, but how would you use the touchstrip in
your productions? I know everyone has different styles of the way they
work, but I was just trying to get an understanding of different
techniques.

This can be done because it is a general controller available in the patch
cord setup. But keep in mind it is hard-wired to control pitchbend. There
is a work-around though. The degree of pitch modulation is controlled by a
per layer setting in the EDIT-PRESET BEND menu, PITCHBEND RANGE. This can
be set to any value form zero (no effect) to an octave up and down. The
setting is done in semitone increments. By setting it to zero you free this
controller for other uses by setting up the appropriate patch cords.

I love the touchstrip, I use it to make my basslines slide up a few
pitches, or to add a little twist to lead lines. If you check out my
track from the last XX-7 contest ("Composite Blue" http://EmuCS.iuma.com)
you can hear me using it for the bassline. That was just one note, with
the touchstrip providing the pitch control. I wish the touchstrip was
longer, I never used to use Pitchbend wheels that much, but the little
strip just feels natural to me.

If you are really into touchstrips, get the ribbon controller from Kurzweil. They make two
models, one which plugs into one of their keyboards that can accept the plug, another which plugs
into a brain which then plugs into your MIDI port. These ribbon controllers are about three feet
long which is really user and finger friendly. You can program the bejeesus out of it, what with
arps, preset scales, one zone or three zones, three pedal inputs, plus two CC pedal inputs and a
breath input. You can use it to alter notes or you can play it like a keyboard.

I bought one with the brain for $180 just before buying a new Kurzweil keyboard. Now I need
to sell it cause I got a ribbon controller with the keyboard. They are really fantastic and have
opened up new dimensions to my playing. If anyone is interested in one, email me offlist.
