First note not recorded?

First note not recorded?

2003-02-17 by zendeil <zendeil@yahoo.com>

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum but I can see that the people
with the answers are here. This might be a newbie question but that
is because I am a newbie to the XL-7. :-)

When I realtime record into the XL-7 from a soft sequencer to create
patterns the first step of the first bar (1.1) is not recorded. My
software is midi syncing with the XL-7 perfectly in every other way
but I have this problem and I have not been able to figure out why.
I have been through the manual with a fine tooth comb filter and I
cannot figure out what the problem is. Also, this is a problem for
me with Cubase sx and MAgix Music Studio. Is there something simple
I am missing? Let me know if more detail about my hardware and
software set-up is needed for a reply.

Thanks
Jeff

What could be happining is if your recording a synth pattern, say about 16
bars, if your holding down the same note you started with when it loops over
back to 1, the note will cancel out the first note. try releasing your notes
just before it loops so it dosnt spill over back to 1,

Or if you're not using 32 measure patterns, add a couple measures to the
end of the pattern to play it safe, then delete them when you're done.

You can change your midi offset for each track by a few ticks in your sequencer
and it should record fine. You don't have to do the entire track just the first
note really, but you need to shift it so the note on event isn't clogged by the
reset, patch change, volume etc. messages sent by your sequencer on playback.
There is also a huge chance your note on message happens at 0:00:00 which is a
reserved time on the XL7

I've always had a similar problem working with Sonar. I could never
get a MIDI offset working correctly, so I just made a workaround...
I'll program up an 8 measure drum pattern in Sonar, and just shift
it to the right a measure when I'm ready to record. When I first
make a pattern, I have it set to 9 measures long, allowing for my
first empty measure, and at the same time letting me have a nice
buffer zone when I do realtime recording for basses and pads and
stuff. It works okay for me. It almost seems that the command
stations have a small 'rev up' time before they'll start recording.
It's quick and dirty, but I hope it helps.
