The sostenuto pedal is the middle pedal of a grand piano. It holds the
dampers up for the currently held notes, keeping only those sustained
after they are released. It is like a "selective sustain" pedal,
allowing the player to hold a chord, press the sost pedal, then release
those keys and play something else staccato while the previous chord
rings out.
