Fw: El Verano Complicado Notes

Fw: El Verano Complicado Notes

2003-01-27 by David

this track is my life project. . . I meditated at the top of the siberian mountians for 3 years creating it. . .

For real, this was a last minute release and is still FAR from finished. When I first built the patterns for this track I was actually quite a bit more trancy. I used a lot more synths and didn't include any of the key melodies... It also featured quite a few arps that made the track sound "trancy" - I really didn't feel it was my style and wasn't inovative enough - I also have a tendancy to use a lot of variation in my tracks, which Isn't a good thing to me... I like to be consistant, but dynamic. So I decided to go along with a primary bass line.... I mixed it up a little bit, and added some syncopation. Actually Realm gave me a couple of ideas on how to improve it... The whole track was produced with a vocal in mind... so it is kind of bare...

The drums are definatly unique. They were the first thing I programmed when I got the XL rom...

at the end I kind of take a turn. This is actually me hurrying up to find an ending. My intro was so long that I didn't get to emphasize my main chorus, and it ends up quite short. But the breakdown would make a nice .. . err. breakdown.

The final mix is already in progress. I have added a vocal line, mixed up the drums a little bit, and added some needed compression. The sounds are a little different, giving it a smidgin more variation in the synths... definatly needed some eq as it was mixed on headphones... hehe - sorry about breaking your expensive champaign glasses ... the check is in the mail...

I ended up actually spinning this version at a party (using Staton's Final Scratch) and it got everyone going. I was kind of suprised because it has such a mellow aspect. It's very difficult to know how "good" a track is without direct feedback. . .

err. I'd continue, but it's not like I really remember what happened at the top of that mountain....

take it ez

Perhaps we could post the final versions to the site at a later date? I
know both of my tunes from the contest now have "mastered" versions.
Comments anyone?

Yeah, holy shit! About a year and a half ago I built a very large
subwoofer for my home stereo. I had two clear (!) AR 12" drivers that
I had left over from a friend's pair of speakers. I went through the
*very* long process of deducing all of the Thiele-Small parameters
(this took a very long time with two meters, a high-power resistor, an
amp, a temporary box, variable frequency generator...).

Then I built this huge box (about 3.5'x2.2'x1.3') with two 2" ports
tuned to 18 (yes 18!) hertz. I wanted to push as much of the group
delay and phase anomalies out of the audible band, while retaining an
almost flat response down to about 15Hz. I also put a blue 60w light
bulb inside so it lights the drivers from the back.

In any case, very few things actually cause the air in the tubes to be
noticeable, as things resonating at 18Hz is usually uncommon. Your
song however, had enough low frequency energy to almost knock the
liquor bottles off the shelf above! Good to know that the sub works!

Cool song...
