MP-7, Midi, and Cubase SX

MP-7, Midi, and Cubase SX

2003-01-21 by djskurge <djskurge@yahoo.com>

I am completely new to software sequencing(except for reason), so
bear with me. What I am trying to do is: use my midiman keyboard to
trigger the MP-7 and trigger Cubase/VST instruments. I only want to
use the MP-7 as a sound module/controller(knobs,etc.) if this setup
is possible.

Ok. I have an extremely bottom-end setup. No awesome midi interface,
just a serial to midi(in/out) cable. An MP-7 connected to this(in
and out). My cables work because I tested it with e-loader. A crappy
gaming soundcard(Hercules Game Fortissimo). I do have a Soundblaster
I am going to install though. After spending an entire day with SX
1.03, I cannot get my MP-7 to work through midi.

I followed the docs. I set my soundcard's in/out in cubase Device
Setup. Midi Thru is on in cubase and local control is off on the MP-
7. In the midi track I use the pulldown tab to set my soundcard
in/out and midi channel 1 is selected. But the problem is, the out
on my soundcard acts weird. When i play i dont hear it echoed back.
If I use the microsoft wavetable out, i hear my track played with
the wavetable piano.

Also if I choose my soundcard out and play the pads, it constantly
sends midi info into the MP, but I still dont hear anything. The red
midi light on the MP stays lit as well as the red light on the 1/A
knob and in cubase the track input stays on even after I let go of
the pads. It stays this way until I change the out. Maybe its my
soundcard? I am lost. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Make sure you click on the the little "Speaker Icon" that's located below
the name of the MIDI track in SX, though you can also see it in the
inspector too. It's right next to the record engage button, and should
light up orange when actiavated. That has to be activated for MIDI to
work on the Track,

Yeah, you beat me to it. After I posted I thought to myself, I bet
someone will mention the monitoring button. Unfortunately I do have
this engaged and nothing. The MP-7 is sending midi cause the track
levels are bouncing but I can't hear anything. I am going to try
some more troubleshooting and if I have no luck I guess I will
install that soundblaster at some point and see if that works. Thx
for the reply realm.

Make sure you disable the MS wavetable device in the Device Setup too,
otherwise it always wants to grab the first audio outs of your sound card.

If you go to Pattern setup on the MP-7 all the way next to the last screen to
Channel assign...........set each one of the destinations to both instead of
internal.

Yeah I tried this as well but no luck. I am beyond frustrated. I
hope its not the MP-7. I even tried the ignoreportfilter file move,
so I could try the ports that SX(1.03) automatically hides, but I
still couldnt hear a midi echo from the mp-7. I am going to install
pro audio 9 and see if it works there. Thx for all the help guys.

Make sure SX isn't set to filter any of the MIDI data, it's under
Preferences. It could be your midi port too, you said you had a really,
really cheap one right?
