Questions regarding the Drums

Questions regarding the Drums

2002-12-05 by kacy.rayburn@kmzr.com

Is there a way to access
 and edit individual sounds
in the drum kit presets ?

 I've worked in Cakewalk
 and there was this
 function called split
 notes to channel or split
 notes to tracks and I
 would use that for my
 percussion instruments.
 Now would the MP-7 have
 such a function, to where
as I could say change a
light bass kick to a more
 heavier bass kick?

 Kacy

There is no direct way to edit individual sounds in a drum kit. You do have
four layers to work with in each preset and presets can have restricting key
ranges for each layer so it is entirely possible to use a stock drumkit and
substitute three additional sounds which would be fully editable (including
the full power of the XX-7 synth and the patch cords).

Additionally many of the drumkit sounds are available as separate instrument
(wave samples) which can also be used in the layering scheme I just
described.

Of course the most direct way to do this is with a separate kit per track,
which I think you were headed towards base don your second question. The
simple answer is no there is not a command to split a drum track into
separate tracks containing one instrument each. you can though edit on
tracks and restrict the edits to a single note or a range of notes. so you
can accomplish the same thing with a little extra work. Certainly not as
easy as what you can do with other sequencers though.

here's one possible procedure to do a split:

I. first copy the original track to the clipboard

II. paste the clipboard into as many tracks as you want separate parts, less
one because the original track will be used for one part.

III. learn which MIDI note corresponds to each instrument. if necessary
study the event list display to see what is what.

IV. Use the MUTE buttons to select every one of the new tracks except the
one you are assigning to hold the next drum note (or notes). Use ERASE EVENT
edit command, first selecting the event type = NOTE and at the prompting set
the range to be just the note you want. So for example if you want the kick
drum, note C1, only on the destination track (the one *not selected* you
would set the range to be C1-C1. Once you push ENTER all of the selected
notes will be erased from all of the tracks except the one not selected (the
destination). if you want two or more drum sounds on a track repeat this
step but leave the selected tracks alone. this will let you keep the
multiple notes on that track.

V. repeat step IV for each destination track by first deselecting the new
destination using the MUTE buttons and making sure the rest of the tracks
are selected.

This actually works pretty fast in practice.

Since you can link 3 presets (with 4 layers each) you could then
have a kit with 12 sounds all with thier own parameters, right?

  right
but you often need more than one layer to make a good drum sound imo.

You could use the Tranpose section of the Preset Edit menu to scale the
drums up or down, or to select new drum sounds on a previously recorded
part. You would of course have to resave teh Preset once you were done.
Unfortunately, there's no way to create your own drumkits in the XX-7,
though we have asked for that feature a few time :)

Each preset has the option of linking to two other presets, You can do
velocity and/or keygroup splits with this. You can reach this feature in
the EDIT-PRESET Links submenu.
