No ID for contest?

No ID for contest?

2002-11-07 by David Jones

I'm not sure I agree with this rule. Music without proper credit is
pointless and shameful. Any thoughts? I'm not sure if i'm willing to just
throw out there a piece of music I've written, without letting people know
that I wrote it as well as proper copyright information!

Here's the rule one more time . . needs a tad of updating too ;)

Rule # 3. All tracks will be hosted at http://emucs.iuma.com once the site
is approved (only a couple more days). Once you have completed your track,
email me at "rEalm619@..." and I'll send you the upload instructions
and passwords. Please don't email the list telling them your song is ready
for download, we're going to try and keep this anonymous until the voting it
over. So don't place your name in the MP3 ID Tags! :)

Re: [xl7] No ID for contest?

2002-11-07 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

umm, true, true, credit where credit due, but . . .

"UNTIL THE VOTING IS OVER" ( it think it says somewhere down there).

Oh, it says "until the voting it over".

But I think you see that everyone will get their credit after a short period of pre-voting time.

okay?

No one said you have to participate....if all your worried about is
immediate credibility, then I think you are in the wrong business....not to
mention, this contest IS NOT about credibility, and there's no material
prizes involved here, AND you'll get your prideful credit due to you when
it's over anyways...I'd be happy to know a song of mine was used in a
helpful matter, or that people enjoyed listening to it, wether they know its
me or not....now if someone else is getting PAID for my music, and I'm not,
then it's a different story, but that is far from the case here.

Pontless and shameful??? Where are you from??? That's not the same ethics
invloved in the music scene I thought I was participateing in here...

Re: [xl7] No ID for contest?

2002-11-07 by David Jones

Let's get one thing straight. We all have different theories and ideals.
Personally I am not doing this as a hobby, I do it as a profession.
Different people have different motives. No I don't have to participate in
the contest. But I am expressing my opinion about it, if that's ok with
you.... I am in the music business because I love music. And I love
playing music. But I've been screwed far too many times to just give
free-reign access to my music without taking credit for it. It's just the
way I feel. I understand if you dissagree. I used to be the same way. And
if you think my music sucks, I would like you to know that it's MY music you
think sucks so you don't make the mistake of listening to it again.

Shameful was maybe the wrong word to use before. But would a painter
typically exhibit somthing without a name at least? I doubt it.

Anyway, I hope you can come to understand my point of view. I am sorry to
be the only person that apparently has somthing to cry about in this group
and it really is not that big of a deal. I just thought I'd bring it up...
And now that everyone thinks i'm a capitalistic pig, maybe it would be best
if i didn't put my name on my music ;)

Perhaps a warning could be placed on the site that some-or-all of the
music is protected by copyright and the authors' names will be
revealed on January --? Would that satisfy the group?

We'll definitely announce who did what track once the voting is done, it's
only anonymous initially.

I'm not sure I agree with this rule. Music without proper credit is
pointless and shameful. Any thoughts? I'm not sure if i'm willing to
just
throw out there a piece of music I've written, without letting people know
that I wrote it as well as proper copyright information!

Here's the rule one more time . . needs a tad of updating too ;)

Rule # 3. All tracks will be hosted at http://emucs.iuma.com once the site
is approved (only a couple more days). Once you have completed your track,
email me at "rEalm619@..." and I'll send you the upload
instructions
and passwords. Please don't email the list telling them your song is ready
for download, we're going to try and keep this anonymous until the voting
it
over. So don't place your name in the MP3 ID Tags! :)

Re: [xl7] Re: No ID for contest?

OK guys, I'll put up a disclaimer on the website stating that all songs
are the property of their respective owners once we get some tunes up
there. And it does already state that the "No ID" thing is only until
voting is concluded already.

Perhaps a warning could be placed on the site that some-or-all of the
music is protected by copyright and the authors' names will be
revealed on January --? Would that satisfy the group?

Re: [xl7] Re: No ID for contest?

2002-11-08 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

First. Copyright exists no matter what, independently of whether credit is given.

Second. I think that is the plan anyway. I ran a contest a couple of years back and on all the tracks on the mp3 site, until voting was done, the credit said TBA, and then after voting, the authors' names were filled in. Of course there is copyright warnings on all such pages, IUMA and MP3--not that they are necessary under any law mind you for protection to be given.

We are talking about mere weeks here. If more than a handful of other than contest entrants even sees these tracks before (and hell, even after) the contest is run, I would be surprised.

These concerns are technically valid, but are in this case quite over the top. Even in large songwriting contests, the songs are sent out to the 100s of judges with no names.

I would feel more comfortable with that...
