Contest

2002-10-30 by S V G

I just downloaded the WinLame MP3 encoder (thanks rEalm!) and plan on joining in the upcoming
contest. It seems that I need to first create a file on my computer of the song itself. Would
that be a .wav file? Can anyone tell me how this can be done? I have Cakewalk Guitar Studio, but
I don't have a clue how to use it. Perhaps I can learn a simple way to import analog audio into
Cakewalk and then rip the MP3 from that. Or is there an even easier way? Or I could record it
onto my Repeater and then use the CFC and a card reader to import the file??? Not sure how best
to approach this one.

RE: [xl7] Contest

Yes, that would be a wav file you need. You don't need any fancy program's
or virtual studios just to record a single stereo track....just run the
stereo main outs of your xx7 into the line-in of your sound card (you'll
probably need a stereo rca to 1/8" jack audio cable with 2 mono 1/4"
adapters for the rca side...or something that equivelates to the same). Then
use an audio recording program to record the line-in input. Your sound card
surely came with at least a simple one. Since we're only doing raw direct
recordings, no pre/post mastering, you don't need any extravegant programs.
Then take the wav file the recording produced and open it up in LAME and
compress it into a a 44khz mp3, was 192kbps the highest rate of encoding? If
so, use that setting for best quality results.

Make sense? :)

Yes, 192kbs is the highest bit rate we're accepting. Iuma actually has no
limit on bit rates, but anything larger than that can take quite a awhile
to download.

rEalm

was 192kbps the highest rate of encoding?

I'd like to enter something into it. When was the
deadline again? I have been so busy with domestic
chores and trying to find others for live performance,
I hadn't the chance to visit IUMA for all the details.

Thanks,
Greg

Cool. I'm almost done with mine too, though I imagine that like you I'll
sit on it for awhile before uploading. It's nice to give your ears a
break before you decide that you're done with a tune. Since the deadline
is January 10th, there's no reason not to take some time and make any
small tweaks later on should a tune need it.

I am planning on submitting a piece. Perhaps more than one depending on how things go. This
is the first time for me making a piece of music completely on this box. My use of it is more in
the live realm. Wish me luck!

Contest

2003-01-06 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Ok, one more reminder! All submissions for the Command Station Contest
need to be uploaded to the website (http://EmuCS.iuma.com) by this Sunday
night. We have about 7 or 8 songs posted already, but I know more people
were talking about entering so let's get to it! I never heard back from
Emu about any prizes for the winners, so this contest is strictly for fun.
Don't be embarassed to enter something you're working on, or maybe even
not quite done with yet. I'm sure all entries will get plenty of helpful
comments after the fact, so it's great learning process regardless of your
skill level.

If you need upload instructions, be sure to ask me for them by this
Thursday. I'll be here only for a couple hours on Friday and not at all
over the weekend. Once all the tunes are up, we'll start the voting.
Speaking of which, I'd really like it if someone else could set up and
manage the voting aspect of the contest, as I entered a song and don't
want to possibly be accused of any foul play should one of my songs make
it higher in the votes. So if someone isn't entering a song and wishes to
help out (preferably a regular poster), let me know. It's very easy to
do...

Thanx all, and it's good to be back,
rEalm

Contest

2004-09-24 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Thanks to all that entered a song for the contest, which basically is me.
Sorry to see that no one was interested in submitting a song and comparing
notes and ideas, I thought it was a good project that seemed to have more
interest. Needless to say this will be the last time I attempt to put
together something like this for the XL-7 group.

Steve - I know you had something in the works, so if you ever get it
finished, let me know so I can check it out.

David - Thanks for your help in setting up an FTP account and website for
us, but it looks like we won't be needing it after all. My apologies.

The rest of you guys suck :)

Re: Contest

2004-09-24 by joepm.rm

just so that i can get my apologies in, er i dunno second or third.

was excited about doing this (working to a deadline is a good thing
imho), but, er, current stuff (inc imminent moving flat) got in the
way.

must say that it a) does mean that a future competition is not a good
idea but b) we should all post some tracks whether we feel confident
about our abilities or not. It's bloody useful to finish a track
(something i'm sure we are all guilty of not doing on many occasions)
or posty something anyway cos feedback is good, we're a community of
sorts.

just don't ask to borrow a cup of sugar

(me must do better)

RE: [xl7] Contest

2004-09-24 by Lightfinger of SR

I love song contests but I never ONLY use the XL-7. My XL-6 won't have it...

                                                      Peace, Lightfinger

I'm sorry things didn't work out but I surely hope you would consider it again and I didn't read my messages in time.. been doing too many shows, and producing too many people. But if you do decide to go with one I would surely hop on the groove train.

Steve - I know you had something in the works, so if you ever get it
finished, let me know so I can check it out.

David - Thanks for your help in setting up an FTP account and website for
us, but it looks like we won't be needing it after all. My apologies.

The rest of you guys suck :)

Sorry, but this is the second online contest I've tried to set up, where I
get a lot of interest at first, but then no one actually submits a song in
time. If someone else wants to set up a contest, I'm more than willing to
offer up suggestions, but I won't be doing this again. No hard feelings
or anything, it's just a waste of my time.
