Humming noise in headphone output?

Humming noise in headphone output?

2002-10-26 by ->Nobody<-

Hey.
Ever since I opened my shiny new XL-7 to put the Phatt ROM (couldn't
choose between the soundsets and I like yellow better :), I have this
humming noise out of the headphone jack, that seems to vary depending on
the Pattern/Preset the unit is on, even when phone level is at mini.
I thought it was the gooseneck lamp, took it off, but nope, it still
there. I've tried to open the case again today, fiddled with the flat
cable that comes from the mainboard to the little board that holds power
button and phone output and it did not help that much, though
the noise is noticably lower now. All that on different power sockets.

I'm not really sure it wasn't there the first day I plugged the unit.
Is that noise normal or what? Grounding problems? Or does the XX-7 has
problems with high impedance headphones (300ohms Sennheiser HD-600)?

Thanks for any input.

I think you're the first person to correctly identify that the humming
comes from opening up the unit. The XL-7 needs a good ground
connection between the front panel and the bottom chassis, otherwise it
has a sort of "internal ground loop" on...you guessed it...the
headphone cable! Make sure you put all the screws back in, so the two
chassis pieces fit snugly together. This should remedy the problem.

Thanks for your answer Aaron.
I wonder if some sort of grounding cable bewteen both parts would
fix the problem? Nasty design flaw if you ask me.
BTW, when opening the unit I was midly pleased to see both chassis
pieces were only fixed together by these 8 screws, and that it did
involved some sliding or something. Seems lousy to me.

Oh well. Anyway. Thanks again. :)

Uhoh, I meant:
"that it did NOT involve some sliding or something."

Sorry for the typo and lousy english.

Quoting Aaron from E-Mu here:
"Make sure you put all the screws back in, so the two chassis pieces fit
snugly together. This should remedy the problem."

There's not much more you can do about it I'm afraid. Good luck.
