Contest Info Ideas

Ok, how's this for some rules? Feel free to discuss.

1. All tracks must be no longer than 6 minutes, encoded to MP3 format at
44.1kHz, and no greater than 192Kbs.

2. You can only use the internal sounds and sequencing capabilities of the
XX-7's to create your song. I know a lot of people don't use the internal
sequencer, but here's your chance to learn something new. So no external
samplers, sequencers, computers, or synths. I think it's fair to use an
external controller keyboard, provided it's not something like say a Karma
that can generate really complex arps that the XX-7's aren't capable of.
Ideally, you should just record the output of your song from the XX-7 into
the comptuer, encode it to MP3, and that's it. No mastering!

3. I'll set up an IUMA site where we can all host our tracks, this has
worked out well in the other contests I've run before since it provides
streaming and download capabilites. It'll take me a couple days to get
the IUMA site up, once it is, I'll let everyone know. All entries will be
anonymous until after the voting is complete.

4. All entries must be uploaded to the site by....ummm....how about Jan
10th? Is that too far away? We can then let the voting take another
week.

5. I'll set up a poll on the Yahoogroups XL-7 site, where users can go and
vote on their 1 favorite song. This is the easiest option I think, but we
can certainly set up multiple categories too. Ideally, since I plan on
entering, it'd be nice if someone not planning on entering would step up
to take over this responsibility, it's very easy to do. Anyone???

6. Keep notes of how you made your song, once all the votes are in we'll
post our production notes for all to read. That way not only can other's
hear what you did, they can read about how you DID it too.

6. As for prizes, none really, unless Emu can offer up something ????
Maybe a spot on their audiophile or XX-7 webpage? I don't think the
overall goal of this should be to win though, it's more to have fun, let
others hear your stuff, get new ideas yourself, and possibly even gain
some constructive critism. We have no way of knowing who cheats, so let's
just use the honor system and NO ONE CHEAT! Ok?

Having been spammed a few times by IUMA, I never go there and never will.

Sounds fine to me. (You haven't said "no multitracking or recording
except for final stereo output" - I presume this is a rule also.)

Sounds good. The idea for a E-mu co-host would be great too. I am
sure their lawyers (as should anyone posting online) would want an
entry form that at least has the entrant affirm that the material is
theirs and free from other's copyright and they will hold harmless,
etc from any lawsuits against you stemming from the use of the track
they enter (same language mp3 and iuma ask of any member).

After those niceties are out of the way, perhaps E-mu might even
consider providing webspace? i.e. a more official contest with a real
prize and perhaps, as a result, in order to maximize the PR effect, a
little more time, like Jan 31 or something.

Anyway, if E-mu is interested, that would be great. On the otherhand,
if it remains independant, then the IUMA site has worked will in the
past and I only encourage you rEalm to produce a small form with such
disclosures and legal mumbo jumbo language (lift it off of the IUMA
contract--so that the entrants at least promise you what you promise
IUMA) and then when you get a song sent to you, you then send the
email that references the entrants name and song title with the
language back to the entrant and ask them to reply with a "Yes I
Agree" back to you so then you have a nice bundle for each
contestant: 1. email with song attached, 2. email from you to entrant
that referenced the song and artist and has legal language, and 3.
reply email that confirms they understand and agree to email #2. Then
you are protected.

Other than that, it sounds great.

Yeah, I think that's the plan. The whole point of this contest is to
level the playing field as much as possible, so that we're all suing the
same tools (namely, the XX-7's). I think we should have one rule only, if
you can't do it on the XX-7 only, you can't use it. :)
