Non OS update request

Non OS update request

2002-10-02 by S V G

The requests for OS updates got me thinking about how this machine could be even more useful.
If I had some inkling of what was going on inside the head of the guys who programmed the sounds,
I would better be able to approach programming myself. For instance, take a few of the nicer
patches, from simple to way complex, and go through a "tutorial" about how the patch was obtained.
 Like:

"... I started with this instrument sound on layer 1 and modified it with an envelope going
to the filter resonance which gave it a certain bite. Then I added another instrument on layer 2
at a reduced amplitude setting, modulating the amp with two different LFO's with triangle and
random outputs to get that "warbly" sound. Then I ran a patchcord from the output of the
discombobulator into the wazoo of the Fritzenschaller to give it that funky retro lo-fi quality
that sounds like Jimmy Page riding a Tonka truck"...

You get the picture. Even just a few patch descriptions would go a long way towards helping
someone like me understand the bigger picture. While I understand in theory most of what's going
on within the architecture of the machine, a few practical examples would go a long way towards
allowing me to see the bigger picture.

While I'm at it, I would also request some sound editing software specifically for the
Proteus series of Rompler, which of course would include the XX-7. This is perhaps the greatest
support that Emu could give to the thousands of sound module users out there. A nice graphical
interface would do much of what I'm asking for in the first part of this letter.

Thanks Emu, and keep up the great work.

Is a XL7/MP7 module available for SoundDiver yet?

That would be your first choice.

One of the finest ways to basically give yourself a tutorial on synthesis approaches is to go about trying to replicate on of your favorite sound patch from one synth to another as best as possible (assuming you have two synths). At first you go in and explore what synth1 is doing and program those things on synth2 from a blank starting position. As you move through all the parameters of synth1 and apply them similarly to synth2 (and tweaking as you go along in order to get the sound to be the same, as it won't be since all synths do things differently) you will start understanding WAY more than you ever did by merely tweaking different things on an existing patch. It is a bit tedious, but it surely teaches you. A much easier way of doing all of this is to have something like sounddiver and have a window open for each synth and do the programming and emulating/copying from there.

Re:[xl7] Non OS update request

Actually, my first choice would be *free* editing software from Emu. The entire Proteus
series runs on the same engine so it would be economical use of software to have one program for
the entire line. And it would behoove Emu to provide this for their loyal customers, it would
keep the Proteus line viable for much longer as well as allowing people to have easier access to
getting deep inside the beast for serious manipulation. This ultimately means that the word of
mouth sales of Emu gear would stay strong for a long time. If potential customers get a sense of
the possible support from the manufacturer, I think they will flock to buy this gear. In this day
and age of information flowing on the Internet, the companies that don't support their products
well are going to lose significant market share. All because of word of mouth.

I don't know if the earlier models from the Proteus line (Proteus 1, 2, or 3, FX, etc) would
work with this software, because their engines are perhaps not the same as the current Proteus
series. I also don't have any idea how complicated it is to make a nice GUI, so I don't really
know how feasable this all is. If Emu started doing it, other companies would have to wake up and
start treating the end consumer nicer as well. This is a win-win situation in my thinking.
