E-Loader not working after XP update?

E-Loader not working after XP update?

2002-09-18 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Hey all,

Ran into a weird thing here, and l'm not sure what happened. After
installing the latest Service pack for Windows XP Home, I could no longer
get E-Loader to run. It would just spit out an error log (which of course
I forgot at home). Due to other reasons, I ended up doing a full
reinstall of all my software and XP too, though I updated this time before
installing any music apps. Now I can't even load E-Loader on to my
computer, the installer starts, then stops with no messages. If I boot up
in safe mode, I can install it finally, but then I can't run it again.
Ideas? Anyone else seen this? Weird, I can install E-Loader 1.0, but not
1.1....

I am running XP pro and everything is working fine. I
left my old SP on it, though. My laptop runs way fast
without having it updated. At my office they were
going to install the latest service to all the XP
stations, but at the last minute everything was halted
and there was some undisclosed reason to why this
service pack was faulty. Did you download a new copy
of E-loader? Sometimes that can help if there is any
residue left behind. Bad .dll or something else might
be in conflict. Things like Direct X or Active X
components may be to blame as well. If you can run XP
pro instead of Home, things will be a little more
solid. Hope this helps.

Well, I did a full reformat of my HDD's so there's no residual drivers
lurking. The E-Loader version was the same one that ran just fine prior
to the Service Pack installation. Weird! The only other thing that has
changed on my system was my new MIDSport 4x4, but I tried installing
E-Loader with those drivers uninstalled, still no luck.

I have this wierd thing that does happen on my system
with the Midisport (2x2), I have to reinstall almost
ever time I use it. I put its driver on my local drive
so if I am on the road with it I won't be stuck
without the CD. Does the E-loader error before the
install completes? The fact that you load the old
version of E-loader may constitute addressing E-mu's
support with the issue.

BTW - I posted some samples. They are imcomplete
works. This is the first time I have tried doing
eveything myself. I would like to get some pointers
and opinions. Web address -

Be gentle as this is my first effort of not being told
what to play. The string instruments were me and the
rest was the XL7.

That's weird about the 2x2 issue you have, I used my girlfriend's all the
time until I got my 4x4, never had any problems with it.

Yeah, the E-Loader thing is really bugging me. Version 1.1 worked fine
one day, never had a single problem with it. Now I can't even install it.

Scott, any ideas?

Re: [xl7] E-Loader not working after XP update?

2002-09-18 by Greg Oler

It is annoying, but technically the Midiman doesn't
support the XP driver officially. I asked my wife if
she has any more info on the XP SP issue. She is a
senior manager at Toshiba here is SoCal, in charge of
the Pre-installs and Hradware/Software testing for the
laptop division. Maybe some of her peeps may be able
to shine some light on the issue.

Since you are having installer problems, I suspect the problems are related to
the Java VM not being fully compatible with the new version of XP. The
installer uses the Sun Java VM as does E-Loader. It seems that M$ is always
doing something to send the Java world into fits...

I'll have to look into the problems. I'll have to get an XP+SP1 system setup,
which may take a couple of weeks. There may be a way to manually hack the
current installer and/or E-Loader to work, or it may require a new release. I
won't know until I get a test setup. Until then, I guess that using E-Loader 1.0
is the only guaranteed workaround. Unfortunately, that means a loss of USB
support, as well as a number of other enhanced features being lost.

The MIDISport problems should not have anything to do with the inability to
install, so I don't think that is the core problem.

So far in the postings I haven't seen anyone else able to confirm the problems
XP+SP1. If someone else can do that, that might be helpful. But beware
because if you install SP1 you apparently run the risk of losing E-Loader 1.1
operation. But if someone happens to have a system they are willing to
experiment with, that would be helpful.

Thanx Scott, that's pretty much right on target with what I was thinking
too. I'll download the latest version of Sun Java and see if that helps
at all.
