MIDI recording problem

MIDI recording problem

2002-08-26 by joesapo

Damn, I thought the forum would be more active... I've been posting
like a madman.

I've been having some problems sending MIDI sequence data from SONAR
2 to my command station, and I was wondering if I could get some
help narrowing down my problem. It seems that any sequenced data
that I try to send to my XL-7 gets cut off until about
10 ticks into the data, so if I try to start something at 1:01:000
it won't be picked up by my sequencer. The sound at 1:01:000 will
play on the command station, but it doesn't seem to want to pick up
the notes. I have to change the first notes in all my tracks to
1:01:010 before they start getting recognized. I have my XL-7 slaved
to my computer, which transmits MIDI start/stop and all note info,
and I have my command station in realtime record mode. I know a
lousy 10 ticks doesn't make TOO much of a difference, but its a real
pain to have to do it to a lot of tracks. Would this be a problem
with my computer or my command station? Are there any Sonar users
that have the same problem or a workaround? Help!

What audio and midi interfaces are you using?

I've just got a Sound Blaster Audigy hooked up to a my Live drive,
with XP running. I've pretty much tried all the time offsets and
MIDI delays that I can find in Sonar. Do you think it's my sound
card?

BTW, just so I understand your issue, you're trying to record MIDI notes
into your Command Station? Why not just save the Sonar stuff as a MIDI
file, then use E-Loader to transfer it into the XX-7?

Re: MIDI recording problem

2002-08-26 by joesapo

I guess I hadn't thought of doing it that way, so far I've just been
treating my XL-7 as a sound module, then transfering over stuff when
I get something I like. This would also probably also make sure that
whatever tick a note starts on in my computer sequencer it also
starts at that point on my command station. As of right now, every
note is just a *little* bit off, but good enough. As far as latency
in Cakewalk, I can't get any lower than about 10ms. Do you think
that this might be why I'm getting that recording latency? I've
tried using Cubase SX and Logic and Fruityloops (what I started on),
but none perform with MIDI as well as Sonar. Any help you might be
able to offer would be great.

Re: [xl7] Re: MIDI recording problem

2002-08-26 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

I think your best bet would be to save the stuff in Sonar as a MIDI file,
then transfer via E-Loader. That way you know everything will have rock
solid timing, and the midi delay thing won't be an issue at all. The
Audigy is an ok card for gaming and normal use, but for a dedicated music
making card, it's not quite up to spec. Not saying that you can't use it
to make music at all, but if you're serious about it and start spending
more time doing it, you might want to look into a better card.

That being said, I don't think that you're going to be able to send MIDI
from the computer and record it into the XX-7 with any better resolution
than you're getting now regardless of the midi interface, maybe only a
couple ms improvement at best. If you are using the midi ports on the
Audigy, a dedicated MIDI interface will probably help out your timing. I
use the midi port on my Echo Layla24 for most things, but when I need
tight timing, I use a dedicated Midisport 2x2, which is only $60.

Sometimes if the sequencer sends the program, patch other sysexdata to the external sequencer, the unit may be reacting to that stuff and not recording for a little bit at the beggining. I could be something like that, check to see exactly what your sequencer is sending out at the beginning to the E-mu.
