Yeah, I have extensive use with an SP808, prior to me getting a computer
(less than 2 years ago), it was my main recording device for all my songs
(*shudder*). I think that of all the gear I've owned, it was one of my
favorites. It worked as a recorder, sampler, effects unit, synth, etc so
it's very flexible. You can get a regular black sp808 and upgrade it to
250MB zip quite easily, as well as the EX OS, which can save you some cash
if you find an older sp808 for cheap. The effects alone are worth the
price, some really wild stuff you can do with those. In fact I might be
picking up another one soon to use as a live sampler, as it's so easy to
use and hold 100-250MB per disk.

Downsides?
- Only 4 stereo or mono voices. If you want to sample grand piano's and
what not, this isn't the right tool for it. This is mainly for phrases
and what ever else.
- 100MB can be very limiting when you're recording complete tunes. I had
to bouce down tracks a lot, which means NO undo if you don't like the
results. You need to be 100% sure you're happy with the results.

Other than that, I think it's a really kick ass box, especially for some
of the prices I've seeming them for lately.

But before it boils down to my last resort I also wanna check out the
SP-808. Have you used it yet, if so whats your opinion.
