Loose knobs?

Loose knobs?

2002-07-25 by David Jones

I'm a little worried about my knobs on my MP-7 - I'm kindof a hypocondriac whien it comes to gear, but i've had my problems with things before. Of the 16 knobs on the left, knob #1 feels a little bit wobbly. I'm affraid with too much tweaking, it might come loose a little bit and detatch itself from the mainboard. There's nothing holding it down now, but does anyone know if adding some bolts to keep the secure might be a good idea??

David,

If you pull gently on the knob outward, it will come off. Behind it
is the moon shaped nipple with threads on it. There is a hex head
screw that snugs it to the faceplate which you can tighten to
eliminate the wobble.

hMMM
my unit doesn't have the hex bolt. it just has the threads. There is nothing holding the whole thing in there.
On the MASTER VOLUME knob, however, there is a bolt! Maybe they just started doing this reciently? ANyone else have missing bolts?

When I get back in town, I will check again on the XL. I know that
on my regular modules, the potentiometers are secured by the nut.

The HEX nuts are only on the headphone and volume knobs, as that
circuit board attaches itself to the XX-7 case different than the
rest of them. The pots on the 16 knobs seemed pretty secure though,
I was impressed by them when I took them out last time.

Thanks for the clarification Erik. I haven't taken the XL apart yet
like you have. :)

Re: Loose knobs?

2002-07-25 by realm619

One more thing I forgot to mention. In almost every case, it's the
filter cut off knob that gets loose first, as that's what gets the
most use by the majority of people. So I wouldn't worry too much if
it's only your "A" knob that feels looser, mine's the same way. In
fact some of my knobs are really stiff (last 4) since I have rarely
used them. :)

As with all potentiometers, it's always good practice to move them
through out their whole range every few months, just so that they
stay nice and clean. Most modern pots are self-cleaning (I assume
the XX-7's are the same), and if you move them they will keep the
contacts cleaner.

BTW, this applies to analog mixers too. I rotate all the knobs on my
Mackie board as part of my monthly studio cleaning and dusting
proceedure.

Re: [xl7] Re: Loose knobs?

2002-07-25 by Aaron Eppolito

Realm is right. Putting nuts on the 16 knobs is not recommended, or at
least tightening them down isn't. The knob board is designed to be held
in place by internal standoffs. Adding nuts to tighten down from the
outside will cause the circuit board to flex (this is a bad thing). The
volume, headphone, and power switch board is mounted exclusively by the
two external nuts, as the board is perpendicular to the front panel.
