What Happened?

What Happened?

2002-06-20 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Last night I was working on a new track in my XL-7, and when I went to
save, I got an error mesage along the lines of:

SAVE FAILED:
ERROR COMMENT 110

Then it went to:

COMPACT USER DATA
CONTINUE, Enter??

The only option I had was to hit Enter, no other buttons worked. it then
spent about 10 minutes doing some sort of Compacting and was basically
locked up until it was done. So, what the hell was that all about?

Screw that, it's totally a problem when you're deep into working on your
tune, and have to stop and wait 10 minutes for it to finish. I had the
coolest shit happening in my tune and then I had to wait forever to get
back to it. I was pissed :)

Erik,

The unit is doing what E-MU calls a memory management type backup.
It had happened to me on my P2K and all I was doing was creating a
multisetup. It hasn't happened yet on the 7 though but it's not a
problem according to E-MU, just a failsafe.

Yeah, I understand that. Can't stop the creative flow right? I
don't know about the saved failed error as I have never gotten that
one but the backup and compacting prompt happens often depending on
how many presets are created and times saved during the process.

Interesting. I save and move on very quickly, so I'm constantly saving my
Presets and Patterns as I write. Strange that this is the first time I've
seen this one though, oh well.

... but the backup and compacting prompt happens often depending on how
many presets are created and times saved during the process.

This defrag operation thing has happened to my XL three times since January, when I bought it. It seems to take less time now than it did at first. My memory is down to about 18% now. BTW, it seems from this that the memory will run out long before I can use up the user locations. I guess then you have to upload to the computer and clean out your patterns/presets?

I don't think I need to upload yet, I'm only using 71% of my memory.
That's about 200+ user Presets, two songs, and about 30 pattern right now.
What do you have stored on your XX-7 that takes up so much memory, a lot
of complete songs?

I've got about 75 presets, 100 patterns, no songs. Plus the patterns that came with the unit. And only 18% memory. I guess I could erase the factory patterns, but would that free up usable space?

Yep, definitely. Cos bank 0 is just like the others. It also means
you can start up the xl7 and begin in one of your patterns, or a
blank one, which you put in 000o. From memory it frees up heaps 'o'
space too.

cheers

Might! The first thing I did when I got my XL-7 home was delete all the
factory Patterns, so I don't even remember what my memory was like (no pun
intended) before that.
