Doh! San Francisco.

it in your whole body, mmmm! Best of luck!

At this point, I'm playing any place, any time for anyone. Besides, once I'm
behind the knobs and all wired up, I'm only vaguely aware of anyone else's
existence :> Absorbed - to a fault...

I'm surely very boring to watch - I barely look up from what I am doing all
the time I'm on stage - lean over the xl-7 twiddling knobs, shuffle around
the foot pedals to loop stuff, and diddle in solos and the basslines, but
basicly keep to myself. Probably a lot more interesting than just using the
xl-7, or placing vinyl on a turntable, but it seems like people expect
something more visual from >live< entertainment as opposed to the
needle-drop kind. Anyone got any suggestions, other than aquiring a
frontperson to squawk and wiggle their butt for the crowd?

Ah, the times we're in. People expect to be entertained as if they
were sitting in their reserved seats at a [...] instead of dancing
their butts off.
The ante has been raised by the DJ guys with the mega-buck light
shows, and some who have their own dancers/groupies.What to do?
Consider your venue man.Is it a CLUB where people go to dance!?
They (the club)should have/provide adequate "distractions" for the
bench-warmers and cruisers.Lights/lazers/smoke/disco-balls etc.

"clubbers" find their groove, and appreciate the groovemeisters ability
to get them there, keep them there, and move them into a gelatinous
mass of rhythmic euphoria they've never experienced, or have
forgotten...

There are more gearheads than ever!!

Play with your toys man..

Your audience will find you.

best,
g.

I'd actually expect them to expect to be entertained - that's the point of a live show. At least, a little deeper listening experience than one from a record. I'd >like< them to totally ignore me and just listen to the music, but that's not exactly the draw of a live show, is it? :>

Oh, they totally had that; go-go dancers on each side of the stage, front projection videos, blacklights everywhere - I felt like I was in a bubble gum commercial. Most of the spotlight lights were set up behind the booth; the gigantic shadow made it looked like I was 15 feet tall from the dance floor. Still, it felt kind of tame; I think I could do a better a job of interacting with the crowd, somehow. Besides, I had a really off night - worst so far this year. I was playing like crap and looking at my watch all night long :>
For some reason, it doesn't feel quite right, when you are performing, as opposed to playing records, to be outstaged a disco ball and a bunch of fog. The whole point of live music is that what is going on is happening >right there<, not necesarily to dazzle people with shiny plastic.
I think this is the same set of complaints that brought about the creation of those horrible 'wearable' Jan Hamer keyboards - the Roland AX80s etc. Wearable XL-7s? Heaven help us. Besides, I've already got enough crap strapped to myself as it is with the chapman stick and monitor headphones.

Maybe, maybe not, but I drove one of the go-go dancers home, so the night was a success whatever happened :>
